According to the article Ireland values draft picks and "believes he is good at the draft"
God help us.

I agree with the article. Don't overspend on a reciever. the question is, with Wallace's and Bowe's mediocre season, will some team overpay for them (likely) or will their pricetags drop enough for Ireland to consider. Even though I really like Hartline, I'd rather overspend a little on Wallace and let Hartline walk then overspend on Hartline.
a really good offseason ends up with us having Wallace, Bess, Mathews as our 3 starting WRs and Keller and Fasano as our TEs. -
I'd love to sign Wallace and think he's a perfect fit for what we need, but the article certainly doesn't make the idea seem promising.
And if Ireland is going to continue running the show, then we have problems.
Also, why on Earth would Philbin be against signing a good player who can help him win now? I assume he understands that his job depends on winning. He is absolutely on the hot seat if we don't make the playoffs next year.Aquafin, oakelmpine and NolesNPhinsFan like this. -

I'm still insistent you draft Patton and Swopes.

Oh god. This is the problem for the fins. We should have a crap ton of cap room especially if we don't resign Long. This is the kind of crap that lost us out on Garcon and Wayne. I think they would have helped this team major this year.

Is this what the Mayans meant when they prophesied the world would end in December 2012?

If they don't atleast ATTEMPT to host some of those nicer FA WRs...and consider it heavily.... the phrase that comes to mind is "pants-on-head-******ed." You know you need more than one - thats pretty much obvious - One would think the ideal thing to do would be sign an FA you really like, and draft a fairly high one that catches your eye... that way the rest of your picks go to other needed holes, and cap space goes to resigning. We aren't a team that can draft back ups and depth with anything above late rounds, we need immediate impact players.....
Oh well.

This shouldn't really be a tremendous surprise. The quotes aren't new, and they pretty clearly pursued this path last offseason.
It's a good decision. Big money free agency is not a particularly good or safe investment. You're inherently overpaying, and there's a big failure rate. You're better off finding guys who are insurance for players you have, or low to mid-range guys who will potentially outperform their contracts.
I am a bit curious about the distinction they seem to be making between offense and defense, though. I think it does make sense, though. You're a little more dependent on chemistry, and I think it's easier to control and be sure that a defensive player you acquire is going to fit your scheme and what you want to do than an offensive player.Anonymous likes this. -
Davone Bess - UDFA
Patrick Turner - 3rd round
Brian Hartline - 4th round
Marlon Moore - UDFA
Roberto Wallace - UDFA
Clyde Gates - 4th round
B.J. Cunningham - 6th round
Rishard Matthews - 7th round
More like Jeff is average at it. I'd really hope they'd consider a break in (Philbin's) philosophy and get a Mike Wallace or Greg Jennings if the price is right.eltos_lightfoot, oakelmpine, cdz12250 and 2 others like this. -
So Ireland wants to build the team through Draft? Yeah fit that man for a straight jacket.....

Point being, we filled a lot of holes that were more important than WR, and this off season I think WR will be a priority in the draft. -
Delusional somehow fits that statement.
I would agree that Irelands draft picks have been somewhat better than his FA pickups but that is not saying much.Aquafin, dolfan22, oakelmpine and 1 other person like this. -

Ah, wonderful, season is not even over yet and the source, whomever it is, basically is saying "more of the same folks"

The official said Ireland also prioritizes the draft but is more flexible with regard to free agency. What if Philbin advises Ireland against pursuing Jennings, Wallace or Bowe and suggests finding a receiver in the draft instead? “Jeff would be cool with doing it through the draft,” the official said.

I see this as a very strong possibility. I would say that of the two Ireland is more likely to want to pursue a FA WR, but it would be stupid of him to force a player on Philbin. -
What we're (or at least I'm) suggesting is that when you have such an obvious need, like say at WR, and there are 3 good option in free agency who you know can play, including one that your head coach had on his previous team, it is stupid and negligent to summarily reject signing one of them because you "value draft picks"
Look at TB, and what one very smart signing of vincent Jackson did for their offense.oakelmpine likes this. -

And why would Philbin even care about where the players come from anyway? He just needs to get them on the team and coach them. Seems like this article is a nice start in the "Ireland deflects blame" game that he is incredibly good at playing.

And the premise is stupid to begin with, because the assumption is being made that a great WR will be available in FA that will suit our team and that no one else will be bidding on them. But hey, its probably me, Lord know this fanbase has never been a reactionary bunch of women before.Aqua4Ever04 and Marco like this. -
Mike Wallace is useful on a very small minority of routes, and doesn't help some of the issues Miami has. He's got his uses, and I think he's worth the money under the right conditions, but that isn't Miami. He's an amazing complimentary receiver, but he's not the "#1" people want.
Dwayne Bowe has serious work ethic problems and you've basically got to hand your passing game over to him to be effective, and if Philbin doesn't want Greg Jennings, that's pretty well his prerogative. He should be allowed completely to make and set the price and interest on him.djphinfan likes this. -

But even then...their YPC improved from 4.2 to 4.4. Their biggest improvement offensively came at the QB position. from a 74 to 91 QB Rating. Now, you can attribute Freeman's improvement to a Runningback, and that is part of it...but I think a 20 YPC 1000 yard receiver threatening double digit TD's has a LOT to do with it.eltos_lightfoot and dolfan22 like this. -

This is going to be one of the weakest drafts at WR in recent history. There will be no upgrading of the WR position via the upcoming draft.
-
I'd prefer getting a WR in FA to the draft. The success rate for drafting WRs isn't all that high and it usually takes some time for guys to develop. I think Wallace would be a very nice fit. I assume he'll get a contract that averages $9-10 million per season, which is a lot, but I'm also not sure where else I'd really want to spend that money. If it came down to resigning Long or signing Wallace, I'm not sure which I'd do at this point.

So this article is saying that Irleand:
- Wants to build through the draft
- Won't overpay for free agents
- and will work with his HC in making decisions
and is based on a quote for "one official in frequent contact with Miami’s front office"
Move along, nothing to see here folks.

I don't know about that. With Keenan Allen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Quinton Patton, Terrance Williams, Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin, Marquess Wilson, DeAndre Hopkins, Robert Woods and Da'Rick Rogers all likely to come out...this draft actually seems pretty fat in the top to middle.ssmiami, dolfan22 and oakelmpine like this. -
You glossed over the fact that their running game was even better in 2010, and he had a rookie in Mike Williams that caught the league by surprise, and a very effective Winslow at TE.
With his down tick in talent in 2011...his QB rating also dipped. Not a coincidence.ssmiami likes this.
