the relevance to henne means nothing. after 25 starts, henne still looked like he was on the right path. its where thill goes from here that counts

 

If he survives the beating, he will have exceeded my expectations.

 

So many variables to take into consideration. One of the biggest is that he has not had a lot of starts as a QB. The obvious of course being that he has played behind a historically bad offensive line.

 

Hard to accurately gauge him IMO as he was limited last season by a lack of receivers and a poor running game, as well as the knee injury that hampered him most of the season. This season he is hampered by abysmal OLine and over all pass protection by the line, backs, and TEs. The poor line play has also affected the run game, meaning that he has even more pressure on him as passing behind this horrendous line is our only offense.

Apart from the Saints game, the fact that he has still produced and kept us mostly in games is a positive.

 

To me he's much better than Henne despite similar stats or whatever through 25 games. Fact is Henne isn't all that bad of a QB in my opinion. If Chad Henne was playing on a team that had a good cast surrounding him he'd produce the ways guys like Matt Shaub (prior to this year) produce.
I see Ryan Tannehill a step above Chad Henne in terms of talent and where we can go with him. I'm not counting on Tannehill being Peyton Manning but he can certainly be Matt Ryan and thats top 10 in my opinion.

 

The sad thing is that there is just no real way to judge him because our line play has been so incredibly bad. This is honestly one of the top 5-10 WORST Offensive lines EVER fielded in the history of the NFL. You can't really judge the Qbs or Rbs because they are under fire on literally every single play. I think Tannehill is better than Henne but we will have to see.

Thats the thing. this team is so dysfunctional, how do you judge? RT is a guy I believe will be a great qb, one you can win it all with and he can be your guy for 10 years, but he isnt Brady, Manning, Luck. But if this team doesnt get its act together, he will be not develop correctly or as quickly as needed. I think RT has fared well considering the circus

 

He might be great some day, but right now he's very much Jay Fiedler. Inconsistent. Similar TD/turnover ratio. Low percentage deep ball. Questionable vision and pocket presence. He's got a better arm and certainly a higher ceiling. But he's got to be better and not leave plays on the field.

I don't believe he's well coached but neither was Fiedler. Jay certainly had the better run support and defense. Just need to see more from him.

Tannehill is this offense, he has carried it when the support broke down. Fiedler never did.

 

Yea I agree. Their limitations are very similar. Although Jay's lack of arm strength prevented him from making some throws on the outside that Ryan makes. They both had problems with the deep ball. They both had issues over the middle because of lack of anticipation. They both lacked great pocket presence. Both could make it happen with the feet. Id say Jay was the better leader as of today. Ryan with the better arm and ceiling. I agree though.

 

I'd love to see Tannehill with Fiedler's O-Line/running game.

I'd love to see Tannehill with Fielders Heart and will to win.

Funny how we forget that Fielder had average running game prior to Ricky. And Ryan had A pretty good one last year.

 

I like what I see, with that oline he has I'm not sure any of those qb's could have looked better. I'm usually a pretty pessimistic guy but I believe next year you will see a jump in Tannehill's play. Whoever is the new GM will upgrade the Oline and the chemistry will be 100% better with Wallace.

 

I disagree and I'll tell you why. Whenever Fuddler threw a ball more than 9 yards I shuddered. His passes just seemed to take FOREVER to get to where they were going, and the further the throw, the more that's an issue. I don't get that feeling with RT.

I will give the point that Fiedler was a strong leader...when playing well. I dunno, he's probably at least a little better than I remember, but I've always just hated the signing RIGHT after he was throwing bombs in the 62-7 playoff loss, when the game was already over-done...

 

And he was a rookie Fiedler was around a few years.

 

Ya I'd like to see a little more fire outta the kid. Hell, more fire all around certainly wouldn't hurt either. Just watch how fired up the Bucs were compared to the Dolphins in their game? Telling.

 

Fielder was a very competent QB....not a superstar/HoFer that he was replacing but nonetheless a solid playoff QB in his time in Miami. After Marino and Griese it would be a close toss up between Fielder, Pennington and Woodley for 3rd best QB we have had so far.

 

If Tannehill could throw a half *** decent deep ball we would have more wins and he would be a good progressing qb. Right now there has been zero progress for the chunk game or his deep ball accuracy. On top of that, last Monday he showed his flaws that I saw in College and compared to Sanchez. He had sims open for a 40 yard dt with 15 yards between him and his man but Tannehill didn't see it but only saw his first read, hartline. He left 2 td on the field that got masked.

He is a game manager, not a game breaker not a game winner or a creator and until he changes that aspect tremendously he to me isn't a franchise QB. If Miami has the top QBs in the draft staring at them like manziel I would jump on it. At worst you will get a 1st round pick for one of the two the following year if not two 1sts because needy teams will pay up for an above average QB.

 

Ok? You said you'd like to see Tannehill with Jays running game and OL. He had a better running game so far then Jay had for the most part. Ryan also has a lot better weapons.

I realize he was a rookie and Jay had his limitations further in his career. That's why Muck said TO THIS POINT, not what he WOULD be 5 years from now.

 

Already proven wrong how many times this year?

 

Jay had the 14th rushing attack his first year with Lamar Smith before the wheel feel off to 23rd before Ricky. Tannehill's was 17th last year. So I really don't see the comparison.

I'd just like to see Tannehill with a solid OL. The rest will work itself out when the OL is solid.

I would say right now that Tannehill has passed the test of being a competent NFL starter. Being that he is only in his second year and other young QBs are falling off, this isn't something to scoff at. It'll be up to him to fix the remaining flaws in his game to take the next step to above average starter.

 

Let's all take a moment here and be honest with ourselves, Ryan does have some issues that he needs to improve (specifically his deep ball accuracy). However that doesn't mean he is a bad quarterback or that he can't be the future of the franchise. I keep reading and hearing about how he makes 3 or 4 head scratching decisions a game, but that is to be expected. He is a second year player who has limited starting experience and we knew that going into this. In fact many were ready to accept the growing pains of a young QB as long as it promised the potential to get us away from the utter mediocrity that we have experience at the position this last decade. I think if you told us during the Rosenfels, Lemon, Culpepper, and Harrington years that one day we'd have a pretty solid young quarterback who makes some mistakes here and there, we would all have danced a jig. Hell pro QB's make head scratching decisions all the time (Phillip Rivers had a few today himself).

Sure Ryan has moments where we wonder what he was thinking, but he has plenty of moments where you just go "Wow that was a great play". The broadcast today showed a graphic that stated we have scored the most points in the NFL this year with less than 2 mins to go in a half. You know who's responsible for that? Ryan Tannehill. What has me excited the most about him as a player however is his desire to become a better professional. He spent the offseason watching film of every single snap to see how he can improve. I guarantee you he will do the same thing, and he'll see those issues like the deep ball and pocket mobility and he'll work on them. Also look at his demeanor in the pocket this year. He is the most sacked Quarterback in the league, but he has yet to get gun shy in the pocket. That dude stays strong in the pocket and takes a hit because he wants to make a play for his team.

Ryan's projected final stats for this year 3,922 yards, 61% CMP 23 TD 18 Int and a rating of 81.2. If he hits those numbers he'll have have surpassed last years yards by 700, almost doubled his TD's, improved his CMP% by 3 points and improved his rating by 5 points. Sure his interceptions will have also increased by 5, but I'm confident he can bring those down as time goes on. Overall this is a player who is trending upwards and is getting better. I understand that we as fans have dealt with crap for so long and we are tired of hearing one more year (especially with the instant success of many young players), but we can't let ourselves get impatient. This is the first time in a long time we have had some hope at the position.

For fun let's do some comparisons, we'll start with Drew Brees:

Drew's first year as a starter (2nd year in the NFL) he had 3,284 yards a 60.8 CMP% 17 TD and 16 Int with a 76.9 rating. Numbers very similar to Ryan's first year. In Bree's second year he only played in 11 games before being benched. His numbers that year were 2,108 yards 11 TD 15 Int a 57.6 CMP% and a 67.5 rating. He really bloomed in that third year (4th year as a Pro) though and he would continue on to break many records. Drew is a great example that players develop at different paces and some need more time.

Now let's look at Chad Pennington's one good year he that everyone loves and wishes we could get a second helping of. He finished that year with a 67.4% CMP (that's crazy) 3,653 yards, 19 TD's and 7 Int's. Again Ryan is on pace to have a better year yardage and TD wise. Chad really excelled with that CMP% and keeping his turnovers low. However he was a a 9 year pro and was savvy at minimizing mistakes. If Ryan hits his projected stats this year he'll have proven he can produce like the last good quarterback we had. He just needs to limit mistakes, which hopefully will come with experience.

Finally we'll look at Luck and RG3. Currently Ryan has thrown for 200 yards less than both of his counterparts, 1 TD less than Luck but 1 more than Griffin, with a CMP% .6 better than Luck but .8 less than RG3. Again what's hurting Ryan is turnovers, but there is no reason to believe that can't be overcome.

TLDR: Ryan Tannehill has issues he needs to fix, but is still a good quarterback and will only get better (hopefully).

Because their nothing to get excited about. I think people forget that this is 2013. This is an extreme passing league now. Those "projected" numbers would of been good, and good for the top half of the league ten years ago. Now their good for 23rd in the NFL.

Yea, so please let's stop comparing Ryan's stats with 10+ years ago stats. The NFL is a changed game. Comparing them is foolish and a waste of time honestly.

 

Fans of other franchises wish they had a guy like Tannehill at QB. You guys are wayyy to hard to please.

Right now I feel Tannehill is the future of the AFC East once brady's gone. And that's a good feeling. Time will tell of course, Geno and Manual aren't inept or anything, but i think Tannehill is above them. And he's yet to show his ceiling IMO.

 

I know exactly what you mean. Waaay to many Fins have a "Marino or nothing" attitude when it comes to this position and honestly Dan had so much raw talent that no one in the league, even day, can replicate. Tannehill isn't maybe our franchise QB, he IS our franchise right now!

He will ride out for the remaining two years and as long as he can get a decent OL and a good WR I no doubt see him getting a new contract/extension. I have no doubt in my mind now, after this seaon he will have the most consecutive starts since Fielder, our last franchise guy.

 

Did you miss where I said he's pretty much on par with two of the top young QB's who the world gushes about (and was drafted in the same round as him)? Fine you don't want to compare numbers from the last 10+ years let's look at where he sits this year. 15th in yards, tied for 13th in TD's (with the likes of Roethlisberger and Newton), 22nd in rating and 16th in CMP%. Yes he's tied for sixth with interceptions which again I said he needs to improve on, but overall his current numbers put him as a mid tier QB. Also if all you got from the mentioning of Brees was the numbers, then you missed the point that some QB's can struggle and even regress before they blossom.

 

Do they? I get made fun of every day from EVERY one of my friends from 5 different franchises about how bad Tannehill is. Do I think he is as bad as they say? No.

But don't act like the general consensus about Tannehill outside of the Dolphin fan base is that he is really good.

 

The comparison is statistically useless so long as they gloss over the difference between a true rookie getting his first starts as a pro, and a veteran finally getting his first starts as a pro.

 

But the argument goes the other way as well. This year you have two Super Bowl winning, $20M QBs (Flacco and Manning) hovering below an 80 Rating. As I mentioned earlier, there isn't a huge discrepancy between Tannehill's numbers and Luck's numbers. In fact, PFF has Tannehill as a higher rated passer than Luck. I use Luck as an example because the media has declared him to be the second coming at the QB position.

As for Brees, I remember our Monday Night blowout of the Chargers some years ago and how the commentators were basically calling the time of death on his career and how the Chargers were in line for the first overall pick.

Look how that turned out.

 

And what 5 franchises do your friends root for? It's pretty easy to rag on a team's QB when you have an All Pro leading the team like Manning, Brees, Brady etc. I could easily say the opposite about my friends how the recognize that Ryan is a good young QB.

 

With all due respect, what teams are these people fans of? Cause the only 4 teams that are so set at QB that they could look at a guy like Tannehill and say "how bad he is" are Saints, Broncos, Pats, and Packers. Falls off right there IMO. Yes, Eli and Flacco have rings but their fans have no reason to pup their chests over their respective play this season. Romo I guess? Does anyone really respect Romo?

 

I don't think he is an awful QB with awful stats. Don't get me wrong. Nor do I think that he has no future, I still think that's very much unknown at this point. I've liked some things and disliked some things about Ryan's game so far in his short career. Right now I am just discouraged about his future as a top NFL QB. I'm afraid of Chad Henne the deuce.

And I hate when dolphin fans say things like "Dolphin fans are just spoiled because of Marino". Uh no. We want a top QB. ****, we will settle for a franchise QB in the top half of the league consistently. Right now the only QB we have had since Marino was Chad Pennington. And that was one season. Yea, I'd say us dolphin fans are far from spoiled.

I'd say pats and steelers both 2 top ten QBs. The other 3 are questionable to say the least. I still get ragged on.
