I think its been posted but its nice to see. The only poeer Aponte will have Is contracts. The worst that can happen is the GM wanting a free agent, and Aponte not being able to come to a deal.

IMO That is a structure that should be in place as it prevents the GM from possibly making moves with only short term goals in mind and won't allow him to screw our cap up to momentarily save his skin.

 

Its never going to happen, but Jimmy Johnson is a tremendous talent evaluator. I know his claim to fame was trading Walker to the Vikings for a boat load of picks but he used those picks very wisely and created a Championship team. We could do worse then selecting him, a LOT worse. Let the bashing begin.

IMO JJ's strength was in his understanding of the draft rather than in evaluation. He established the now defunct draft value chart and used that and his bounty of picks to wheel and deal from a position of power. He also had scouted the crop of college players for years as a recruiter and coach. His success came from having more picks than everybody else, not from having a higher percentage of picks be successful. After those advantages dissipated he was pretty average compared to the rest of the league.

It was an intentional wording. It implies that the General Manager doesn't have full control over the free agent process.

It will very likely be exactly like it was before. The General Manager will decide which free agents Miami pursues, and the evaluation of that player's talent will also translate into a priority level for the free agent. If the player is high priority then Dawn Aponte will set the market on the player as she did with Mike Wallace, Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler. If not then she will use her discretion to offer market price, and decide on the contract's structure as well.

I think you could sense differences in their contract strategy between different players such as Brent Grimes versus Wallace/Ellerbe/Wheeler. With the latter the Dolphins clearly set the market and aggressively offered a lot of money to the player very early in the process. With the former, the offer they gave the player was competitive with other offers (Cleveland) and they waited on Grimes to make a decision.

When you saw articles prior to that offseason in which Jeff Ireland was cited as having learned a lesson from having wanted Vincent Jackson as a free agent but getting gunshy about the money that it would have taken to get him, I think that fits into this structure. He didn't instruct Aponte to set the market fearlessly and nab the player at whatever cost. He gave it a priority level that translated to taking him but only at the right price. He came to regret that decision and it translated into him placing highest priority on Mike Wallace.

Ok..so what your saying is....Aponte can "can" something if it risks ruining our cap. This is good IMO. How many GMs have put their teams into Cap Hell....this makes sure we continue to have room to be competitive financially year after year. Yes or no?

I think he means that if a player is a FA then he is not a part of the 53 man roster until he is signed, at least that's what I understood.

 

I believe the issue that needed clarification was were the Dolphins offering the old GM role that Jeff Ireland occupied, or the reduced role that Ireland turned down. It's clearly the former, which is why the FPA has changed their earlier stance on not recommending their clients to interview in Miami.

It's autonomous control over the 53 man roster. That's FA and the draft.

 

You've got to be a dolt to think Ross' statement leaves Free Agency out of the GM's control.

Agreed , it was more the buckshot theory , more selections should mean more success , and it did. Still think that premise works well .

 

I agree he probably wouldnt, but I wouldnt mind seeing it.
