Among tackles, potential free-agent targets would include Kansas City left tackle Branden Albert (Miami wouldn’t give up a second-round pick for him last April, and there’s a good chance he moves on this offseason); left tackle Eugene Monroe (Baltimore acquired him in October for fourth- and fifth-round picks and doesn’t want to lose him); New Orleans right tackle Zack Strief (three sacks allowed, decent in the run game); Jets right tackle Austin Howard (two sacks allowed, not a great run blocker); Oakland left tackle Jared Veldheer (missed first 11 games because of torn triceps but well regarded), St. Louis left tackle/guard Roger Saffold (injury history but very skilled) and Cincinnati’s versatile Anthony Collins, who started the season as the Bengals’ sixth offensive lineman and now is starting at left tackle and hasn’t allowed a sack in 592 snaps this season.
Among tackles in the draft, ESPN’s Scouts Inc. has four rated as top 30 picks. Texas A&M’s Jake Matthews and Michigan’s Taylor Lewan likely will be long gone before Miami selects 19th overall. Alabama junior Cyrus Kouandjio could be, too; ESPN’s Todd McShay has him 10th in his mock draft.
The player considered the fourth-best tackle, Virginia’s Morgan Moses, is rated 25th overall by both ESPN’s Scout Inc. and McShay.

BJax also wrote that Carl Petersen loves Philbin.
Great advice from the guy who traded a draft pick for Herm EdwardsTooGoodForDez and unifiedtheory like this. -
### Some Dolphins players privately believe coach Joe Philbin, reserved by nature, needs to improve as a motivator and in how he prepares teams emotionally for games. The flat demeanor and unemotional “stay the course, don’t get too high or low” message doesn’t resonate with some Dolphins and was reflected in their play at times. And reading to his players off index cards isn’t exactly inspiring.

Belichick is nothing - absolutely nothing - at all like Pete Carroll or Jim Harbaugh. But, he still wins. The personality stuff is generally not a big deal unless a guy is a total weird agent.
It really is a) how good a teacher you are; and b) how well you prepare the team mentally.
Rodney Harrison was on Dan Patrick and noted that what made Belichick the best coach was mental preparation. He said the mental part of football (knowing where to be, making the right decisions, understanding what is happening on the field) is the most important part of the game.
That's what it comes down to for Philbin.PhinGeneral likes this. -

back to the OL discussion.
Any more, in round 1, it really doesn't matter where a player is ranked as far as #25 #10 or #35 (even by teams). It often will come down to what a team thinks it needs.
I saw a great run down of teams draft needs on NFL.Com. If the Dolphins are at #19, there are probably 14-15 teams ahead of them that have OL as one of their top 1-2-3 needs in the draft.
I am not a fan of Kouandjio. He has the physical size, but he won most of his battles that way. We'll see. I was not impressed with him or Alabama's offensive line this year. They were talented but not great.
That said, the Dolphins are desperate. They could actually use 4 upgrades. 3 new players (unless they retain Mckinney) would be vital.
THe fear I have about Ireland staying on is that he will be content with John Jerry. Ireland's unwillingness to properly upgrade the O-line could well be the downfall of Tannehill's career. -
And the last two games, for me, are the icing on the cake when it comes to that. Nice guy, would make a good OC, but he's not true head coach material imo. -
The problem is, we apparently have players that need someone to motivate them at this level instead of motivating themselves.
Joe Philbin's sideline demeanor is not that different from Tony Dungy's or Lovie Smith's.Mile High Fin, Tin Indian, Ducken and 8 others like this. -

Speaking of Oline options, how do we proceed with J.Martin ? That's the big question. Might not get much more than a 3rd day pick for him.
We have 3-4 starting spots on the line to be filled, that is a mess. Something tells me we are going to be using the word "gel" a ton next season. The line has to be priority #1, and it won't be fixed with a draft pick or two. -

Essentially, if Joe Philbin was as bad as some of you made out, there is no way this team, with this talent, wins 8 games. You guys are trying to make him out to be another Cam Cameron, and he's simply 10 x better than that.Mile High Fin, Ducken, Rocky Raccoon and 3 others like this. -
We aren't gonna get a pick for him. Some of the statements on this site about trading him are ridiculous. Both him and incognito are gonna get cut. Rightfully so. Martin clearly struggles and would struggle to find himself a buddy in the locker room. Whatever you think about cogs play, his off the field behaviour will see him cut. There will be no trade. We're gonna have to eat it. Such is life.

I would be more than happy if most of the draft picks this year are spent on OL and LB, with Wheeler and Ellerbe shown the door and Jordan moved to OLB. A couple of exceptions that come to mind would be TE CJ Fiedorowicz and DE James Gayle, good players and good fits imo.
-
But no, seriously. I think the unfortunate truth is that he's going to get cut and we're going to wind up with nothing to show for that 2nd round pick. What can ya do about it?P h i N s A N i T y likes this. -

Need to replicate the overhaul that CHI did to their OL.

These were my concerns after observing coach in his first year..
A coaches job imo is to unite it's team emotionally and to turn that to play into controlled anger to get the best performance..there are other ways to get that unity and performance Belicek style, but like Lombardi once said, if you win the players hearts they will go to great heights.
At this point all of them aren't believing..he will need to change some of his ways..
And, some of the players are pu$$ies for having an excuse.P h i N s A N i T y likes this. -
That's part of the job..winning your players over.. -
That Eugene Monroe trade kills me still. He's worth higher then he was traded for even factoring in a new contract.

I think there is a big misconception about Bill B and Philbin being the same personality as Bill's.
Now I'm not in the locker room so I just judge off sidelines and everything he shows in the public. Philbin is more of the Lovie Smith mold. Bill isn't a rah rah guy. But he has a certain ******* mentality. So he's not to up and down, but his personality breeds swag and confidence. Players don't want to **** up around BB because he will make you feel like an ******* without belittling you. And everyone plays off his "I'm better then everyone else" smugness.
Just my opinion of course. -

Do we go after Albert in the offseason?
-
Clearly they wanted to get younger which is understandable. But in the process they lost a lot of the veteran leadership and it seems to have bitten them in the ***. Hopefully it serves as a learning experience. -

I've lined up a few candidates to replace our current tackles and guards. Should be an immediate upgrade.
