I like his leg now if he can consistantly do this we have a new kicker. I think he gets most the work the next two games then we see. Liked Carp until that those two brain farts early last season the writing was on the wall, it happens hate to see a good guy go down, but with a leg like Strurgis you have to if he's consistent

I was beginning to think that we wasted a draft pick and suddenly he fricken Gus the kicking mule. That was an impressive kicking performance if I ever saw one.

 

Perhaps those misses play a role, but I think it is mostly his salary. Truly unless Sturgis falls on his face, he will win the job, and based on last night - I think we can crown him. Now, all we do is hope that some team is desperate for a kicker, and trade Carp for a late round pick. He is a top 15/20 kicker....won't be out of work.

Watching the Green Bay game last night, the announcers said Mason Crosby has been struggling on FGs in camp. Maybe they'd give us a late pick for Carpenter.

 

Carpenter can still get a job with the Jets as a QB

 

Also being a gator fan, I knew what we were getting a great kicker and glad he is doing well.

 

I dont think anyone will trade something for Carp. They know we'll cut him sooner or later. Very best would be a 7th round pick and I find even that extraordinarily hard to believe.

I think you are right… but if we cut him he has to go through waivers, right? So maybe one of the better teams gives us a 6th or 7th so that he doesnt have to go through the waiver wire.

 

I like both kickers. But when one makes $2+ million/year. . . . .

 

Yeah, but his salary is too high. Odds are teams in need of a kicker will wait for him to clear waivers and then one will sign him on the cheap.

 

Hmm, true - didn't think of Waivers, good point. I'd still hazard that the odds are VERY low - but I've been wrong before haha.

 

Well Ireland was a kicker in his day, I'm sure he saw somethin to spend a 5th round pick on one..some performance last nite..kinda liked his enthusiasm to..

 

No suprise really - His leg was unreal at Florida. As soon as they drafted him, you could kiss Carp goodbye. It is rare for a team to draft a kicker, but he was worth the pick. I give Ireland credit here...Sturgis was a nice pick.

And it's not like Brandon Fields leg wasn't wasted inside the opponents 40...now if we reach the 40 and in quarters with a stiff wind at our backs midfield, and Sturgis becomes the weapon of choice.

Kudos Ireland, as soon as he grabbed Sturgis, I was like Nice Pick.

Most of the draft sites rated Sturgis and Hopkins neck and neck or Hopkins ever so slightly higher. PFW (and hence BLESTO, which Miami belongs to) rated Sturgis slightly higher. Buffalo picked Hopkins a half round later. It will be interesting to see how their careers compare.

 

Well, if the main difference twixt carp and Sturgis is money....it's a no brainier. But, how do you find out about his reliability under duress in the preseason?

 

As a FSU fan I liked Sturgis better. He seemed like he always hit big kicks. While Hopkins was really inconsistent with those kicks.

 

Well, can he be any worse then DCarp who has never made a clutch kick in his life?

 

As a Florida fan I always felt that the Gators had an advantage in the kicking game vs. almost every opponent while he was there. He wasn't perfect, but I generally was confident whenever he lined up to kick a FG. Although I actually had Hopkins rated a hair higher in the draft. I have at least as much confidence in Sturgis' consistency as I do in Carpenter for kicks 40 yards or less. And I have considerably more confidence in Sturgis' ability to hit on the 50+ yard FGs. Sturgis also is more impressive on KOs, but that's less important than it used to be as fewer KOs are run out nowadays. When you throw in the salary factor, I would say that short of injury there's no way Sturgis doesn't win the job.

 

Comparing Carpenter and Sturgis on FGs, it appears to me that Sturgis gets much better rotation on his kicks, so the ball tracks better and is less prone to drift toward the end of the kick. Hopkins for that matter gets better rotation than Carpenter too. I recall before the draft, during a skills competition that included several of the top kickers including Sturgis and Hopkins, Raul Allegre was talking about their ball rotation and how critical it is for maintaining accuracy on longer kicks and you don't get that little slice or hook right toward the end of the kick.

 

I remember that, how did both do?, and why don't we just pull the stats on their college careers, can't mess with stats on kickers lol.

 

Caleb Sturgis - 65-66 PAT's in his Junior and Senior years and a 46-54 FG's 85% 6-8 from 50+

Dustin Hopkins - 109-110 PAT's in his Junior and Senior years and a 47-57 FG's 82% 6-9 from 50+

Both have enormous legs, both had excellent Junior and Senior season...

Hopkins is a four years starter - Sturgis a three ... Flip a coin.

Hopkins has to kick in Buffalo, New England, and New York 10 times a year. Sturgis only has to kick at those sites 3 times a year. I'll take Sturgis.
