While reading an article in the Miami Herald this morning, I came across an interesting stat. Ryan Tannehill is the 4th worst running QB in the league, this according to Football Outsiders.
There has been talk about Ryan's decision to hang in the pocket to long, giving up a sack, rather then running.
Joe Philbin says...
“You’d rather have a guy who’s comfortable standing in there and then speeding it up as opposed to a guy who’s always running out of there, always seeing ghosts,”

“It’s better to have a guy willing to sit in there and function while some stuff’s compressing around him as opposed to, ‘I thought I felt something. I’ve got to get out of here,’ ” Philbin said.
He also said its part of a Qbs developmental process.
Now, Im not a QB coach...nor an expert. But Im damned impressed by this. Think about it, everybody knows Ryan Tannehill can run with the ball. Ryan himself knows he can pull it down and run well with the ball. So, this seems like a concerted effort by Ryan to NOT fall back on that. To learn how to handle pressure inside the pocket well. Look, his ability to scramble isnt going to go away. It will always be there. But, imagine how good he will be once he becomes a master of the pocket. I could be crazy...but I think we are only seeing a glimpse of his potential at QB.
What do you all think?

I just know this oline and backfield needs to improve pass protection so the kid can shred defenses.

we know he can run, i'm much happier that he can apparently pass

I actually don't know he can run well. Honestly, the few times I've seen him scramble, and him being a former wide receiver, he's not very fast.

I think it sounds like coach speak. If RT ran more Philbin would be praising him for identifying that the pocket is collapsing and using his legs to keep drives alive. I do believe that RT is being groomed and growing into his position rather nicely. I just do not much weight into comments like those.

Where do QB's like Brady,Manning and Brees rate on that list?

I think it's an excellent article and something I continue to struggle understanding, the thought of training someone to hang in the pocket without engaging their instinct to run is fascinating, and the discrepency in the ratio even from last year when it comes to running seemingly gives the statement validity..
Can you design and win a championship designing the offense to be strictly executed from he pocket, or do you need the playmaking trait when protection breaks down, Monday nite should be a good test to see where tannehill/Sherman is at this point because the intensity should be playoff like..
Like you VT it makes me feel good hearing the these specific comments. -

I'd rather have a QB that can read a D and make adjustments throwing the ball than have a running QB anyway. The last "running" QB to win a Super Bowl was Steve Young and he only ran when he had to.

It's great to have a QB who can make plays with his feet. At the NFL level, every extra hit on your QB adds up and increases the chances of injuries. Guys like Vick and RGIII are fun to watch but they won't stay healthy. Give me a pocket passing QB who can move around in the pocket to avoid hits/sacks and extend plays any day of the week.
When you get down to it, RTH has made substantial strides over the last 12 months. I can't even imagine what another year or two will do for him. As his pocket awareness/movement improves, he will become the franchise QB we all need and want him to be. It's still early but Ireland and the staff hit a homerun with him. -

It may be a bad analogy...but I kinda see it like being a hitter. Some guys are just "foot in the bucket" pull hitters. Ball is inside or over the plate...its getting yanked down the line, but they dont become a truly great hitter till they learn to go the other way with the ball. For Ryan, he worked hard at being a better pocket passer over the summer. He's staying in the pocket so he doesnt lose any options across the field. When he develops the prescence to know..ok..time to pull it down and move, hes gonna be all the more deadly.

His athleticism doesn't "pop" but he's definitely a smooth athlete when he pulls the ball down. I think his athleticism is comparable to Aaron Rodgers, which is perfectly fine with me. Now he just needs to use that athleticism like Rodgers.

None of those three have ever won a SB ring. McNabb lost the only SB he ever made it to - to the Pats. Eagles fans still dog mcNabb for stage fright and throwing up before the SB and choking. -

I agree. Tannehill is being coached to stay in the pocket and struggles with that at times. There are times when he has taken sacks that you can almost see him struggle internally with himself as to whether to run or stay in the pocket. Really saw that in the Colts game on that coverage sack he took. He started to tuck and run, stopped, paused, then ate the sack. Wish he had either thrown it away or just ran. -
I also think that is where the comments about Tannehill occasionally looking like a "Deer in the headlights" comes from. It's the inner struggle as to whether to stand in the pocket as he is being coached and to ignore his instincts to run. That struggle seems to freeze him at times.djphinfan likes this. -

Running quarterbacks don't win championships. Steve Young was not a running quarterback anymore when he got his ring.

I'd like to see him just buy a little more time w/ his pocket presence as well as avoid big hits. He's getting rid of the ball quickly and doing what he's getting paid to do so it's hard to be too picky. I would like to see improvement from the line that allows him more time for slower developing (deeper) routes.
