Pollard would be dope. If long sticks with STL then SS24 will remain a phin I bet. Although I would prefer him not, people are getting grabbed left and right... (his asking price is gunna get b-smacked imo )

 

What we're seeing is what some of us have been saying for a bit now...CB is not as important as lot of people think.

The rules are too much in favor of the WRs so the best way to stop the passing game is with a pass rush. Look at FA, CBs everywhere while tumbleweeds and cobwebs in the pass rusher room.

 

Pollard would be interesting .... he wasn't expensive for BAL - so surprising to me that he was cut.

CBs must be crying softly to themselves with this market .... great for us! Heck, we could pick up 2 CBs if we wanted to in this market .... just PLEASE DON'T BRING SMITH BACK!

Signing Pollard would be like contracting a Hitman.

 

I think we keep Smith at $5-6 per year which is reasonable. Can probably get a Lewis or Munnerlyn for around that or less too

Man somebody really did him a disservice getting in his ear and making him think he was worth a double digit per year contract. I wouldn't take him back unless its at a discount at this point.

Like i've said before, I'm pretty anti-SS24 but 6 or less would be pretty fair.

 

Think about it....why is there such a big supply? Because teams aren't willing to spend a lot on a position that is not that important. If they were important as you say, they'd be signed. Its not like this is an influx of rookies taht can't find suitors.

Its like if you go by a car dealership and they have a lot of cars.......they aren't necessarily doing well.

CBs are certainly still importnant, it's just that there are only a few really great ones and the rest are all roughly the same. There is no huge difference between Smith/Lewis/Talib/Munnerlyn, etc.

No they certainly are not.

 

They may fit different styles or play different way but I see no huge talent difference between those guys that you'd be dying to have one over another. That's why all their prices are collectively going down

I just love when I hear these theories that certain positions are now somehow "outdated" and not important anymore.

We without a doubt need CB help.
I'd prefer Sean Smith go elsewhere. He has not progressed well at all.
I think the next step in FA may very well tell where we go with our first round draft pick.
We fill CB in FA we may look to Werner for pass rush. We pick up a pass rush DE in FA then the Rhodes rumors may be a lock.
Just my 2 cents.

 

That's is only the demand side of the equation. The fact that the market is also flooded with CBs both in FA and the draft is lowering the value just as much. If it was only due to demand than the market for OT would be red hot as you need to defend against the pass rush to have a successful passing offense. However the tackle market is also soft due to supply.

 

I would not say they are flat out "not important" as I would that the importance of the position is relative, like most.

There have been plenty of times when we have yelled our ***es off at the TV wishing we had CB play worth a damn. It might not be something you necessarily need to spend a fortune on, but again, relativity.

With that being said, the market WAS flooded with CBs and they are being picked off left and right. Jake Long needs to hurry up imo so we can move on either way, I have a feeling thats the real hold up here.

Yet it doesn't work like that for any other vitally important position. Take WR, teams pay more than they are worth for them. Same with TEs and OT and DTs. Corners are dropping in value.

Outside of Wallace and Harvin the WR market has been pretty stale. Even Jennings is only now getting a second team invovled with visiting Minessota.

If there were a truly spectacular corner out there he would get paid a huge sum. If Revis is traded he will get a record breaking contract.

None of the positions are different in that accord. The special players break the bank, everybody else is kind of in a pile that gets rummaged through for bargains.

 

Just as many as there are corners, actually. Winston, Long, Vollmer, Andre Smith... that's 4 top quality OTs.

My mistake, I meant LT not OT. Smith, Viollmer and Winston are all RT. Long is a LT and he is choosing between 2 contracts as we speak.

 

Jennings is still going to get more than he is worth and teams are being adding on the list for him as the teams shrink from the CBs.

 

Yeah, Pollard is a beast and an enforcer...but when i watched Jones play fs, he looked uncomfortable and unsure...

 

IMO the problem with paying a CB a truckload or spending premium picks on them is that offenses are so deep these days. QBs with crazy accuracy short, medium and long who have 3-4 good WRs, 1-2 good TEs, a good RB who can all catch the ball. Paying top money to allow you to match up with one guy leaves you underfunded to match up on the rest. That doesn't even take into effect rules changes that favor offense. So you spread the wealth in the secondary on 2-3-4 decent CBs, get a ballhawk safety, and ramp up that passrush.

A premium blue chip CB like a Miliner this year, or maybe a Peterson, Claiborne, Haden in the past still make sense with the new rookie cap, but second level talents I am not sure are worth first round picks anymore. Less value, like taking guards. Not sure if Rhodes/Trufant are worth that blue chip rating personally. Would prefer a passrusher, safety or WR like Austin/Patterson. More impact.
