I'd start with the top 3 on that list, and Dan Carpenter.

 

Can't imagine Soliai would get cut since he was just extended not so long ago...

 

Only one I'd cut is Carpenter, but after we draft one of the top 3 kickers in the 7th round.

 

Only for two years, and he's under performed since he was franchised. It's a different defense, and it's not a huge hurdle to find someone who can run defend as well and be a pass rusher.

 

I don't see us getting rid of Davone Bess either. We are trying to upgrade our recieving core not deplete it. Bess is a bigger part of things than a lot of people realize. I don't see where Brandon Gibson is an upgrade over Davone Bess either. Bess is a really good football player and those are not always easy to come by. It would be ultra stupid to cut him. We have added Wallace and will add another one via draft. Bess and Hartline have a rapport with Tannehill and both are quality wideouts. We have added an X factor and a superstar at the position to play with those two. Lets not screw that up by axing Davone Bess for Brandon Friggin Gibson.
Davone Bess' production is worth a hell of a lot more than the 2.6 million we would save by cutting him, so it's stupid to even have him on that list.

 

Carpenter yes.

Soliai, Inco, Bess have reasonable contracts and value and could be and should be traded instead of cut, if it comes to that. (I would not get rid of Soliai and Inco.)

Marshall and Patterson are interesting. Trading value is not there. Not sure what cap impact cutting would have.

 

I could certainly see Miami trying to get something for Bess if in fact Tavon Austin is their primary draft target.

 

I say Patterson because of no cap hit, Incognito and Carpenter follows.

 

Bess is not getting cut unless we are stupid. Bess has had numbers from a Catch/Targets metric similar to Welker with largely the same skillset. Remember that year that most of his catches were for first down?

Soliai will not get cut, unless we draft Lotulelei at #12 and even then I doubt we cut him even if we draft Lotu or another DT in the 2R.

Ritchie Incognto: not without signing a guard (we missed on Levitre imo) or getting Warmack/Cooper.

Richard Marshall: I believe he is still injured so we cannot..?

Dmitri Patterson: Yes please - no dead money on his contract due to getting him midyear so we would save $4.6m

Dan Carpenter: idk...him or Kaeding or Bironas.

 

Marshall. Injured and a poor CB when he was healthy. Unless they plan on him pushing Clemons...cut him.

Same, not positive with that particular rule for injured players in the offseason.

 

His career FG avg of 81.9 is pretty mediocre. Year by year, he's only had one really great year and that was 2009 when he made 89.3%
2008: 84%
2009: 89.3%
2010: 73.2%
2011: 85.3%
2012: 81.5%

There are worse kickers out there, but for $3 mil a year he should be one of the best. We could get a kicker for vet minimum who makes 81% of his kicks. One of the 3 good rookie kickers in this draft if taken in the 7th, should be able to beat 81% and only count $450k against the cap.

 

Let Incognito play out his contract, cut Richard Marshall, retain Patterson, trade Bess, extend Soliai, cut Carpenter.

Chris Houston would be my Marshall replacement and a college kicker would be Carp's. Bess is replaced by Swope.

 

I have seen Houston play and I would rather keep an injured Marshall.

How is Patterson worth 4.6m. Let him find a 6th team.

DCash has turned into DCrash, since he made the pro bowl he has not been very good.

 

Gibson would not replace Bess because he not a slot wr. A guy like Welker would. I wouldn't worry about Bess.

 

Bess is a FA next year so I am sure he is ready to go and earn a new deal.

R.Marshall: Was not sure if the offseason rules concerning releasing players if they were injured was similar to inseason.

Call me crazy, but I actually wanted us to sign Donald Thomas. I thought he did rather well for us and remember no one really knew why Sparano dumped him..? I could see that; draft G and move Incognito to RG.

I think cutting Patterson is a sound strategy even if we do not sign a CB in FA, because the money he frees up ($4.6m) is good for more than half our draft class.

I concur with Carpenter.

Bess, has a very similar skillset to Welker. The only difference is that Welker has had Brady throwing him the ball. People seem to forget that not too long ago Bess was on espn, etc drawing rave reviews while converting 3rd downs with most of his catches. Wallace takes 1 person off of him and allows him to exploit 1on1 coverage with his shiftiness and great route running ability.

 

Patterson would probably be the first to go here but Marshall could also go.

 

Uhm, you guys do know that Carpenter actually ended up having his normal year by the numbers, right? Not saying he is the best kicker out there, but he also wasn't as bad as everyone seems to think. In fact, he had a game winner last year which he didn't have the year before so in someways,he had a better year than previous.

I have no problem with Marshall being cut or Patterson.

I do think it would be short sided and stupid to rid ourselves of Incognito and especially, Bess.

 

Befuddled to see soliai on any cut list no matter how hypothetical it may be.

No reason to cut bess until his replacement is drafted, if his replacement is drafted.

 

There are 3 or 4 impressive college kickers in this year's draft that will make less in 4 years than we're paying Carpenter this year. He might've had a game-winner but he also had 2 game losers. He's nothing special that one of these rookies can't replace in my eyes.

 

What about 2010 when he made only 73%? Those were some tough times for him and the team.

Patterson will be 30 and has just 5 career INTs in 9 years, whereas the 28 year old Marshall has 18 career picks and the versatility to play safety should Clemons get hurt. I'd think the versatility paired with greater turnover potential would make Marshall the better choice.

 

Carpenter is also amongst the league leaders in touchbacks which shouldn't be discounted, and he absolutely did not have two "game losers," as you state.

He has struggled from distance though. I am not opposed to bringing in competition whatsoever, but if you are talking about college competition, the chances of cutting him prior to that is pretty much nil. Which is what we are talking about.

 

Carpenter's touchback% was tied for 14th, not league-leading, and his 25th ranked FG% was far from spectacular.

Meanwhile, rookie Blair Walsh was an All Pro. He also was 4th in touchback%.
Fellow rookie Justin Tucker was tied for 6th in FG% and 7th in touchback%.
Both of their FG percentages (92 & 91%) are higher than any of Carpenter's 5 years and 10% higher than his career average.

Not only were the 2 rookies superior in FG% and touchback% but they cost $2 million+ less per year.

Zona & NY? Both of those misses cost us the game, no?

 

We're not cutting any of them until an upgrade is signed, sealed, and delivered, either through free agency, trade, or the draft.

 

So he's ranked in FG% (with at least 12 attempts):
2012: 25th
2011: 13th
2010: 33rd
2009: 7th
2008: 21st

So 2 good years and 3 not so good years. How do we know which Carpenter we're getting next year? I'd rather put his money to better use if possible.

 

Patterson and Incognito maybe are the only two guys that should be considered. Marshall's position is the only thing keeping me from including him.

I could see both corners getting released for sure. I think we're gonna sign a corner in free agency and then draft 2 at least. Also Bess I think could get released to if we find a slot receiver to replace him. Welker?
