This guy has been getting progressively worse since he came in the league. He only made his last pro bowl on name recognition alone and he's being victimized today. He can not hold up against pass rushers. Commentators gush on him, but they also still talk about our "dominant run game" that hasn't been seen in a month. For someone who is going to be looking for something close to $10 million a year, we can't afford to hold onto him. Just another failed high draft pick.

Depends on how realistic Jake is about how his performance deserves to be paid.
I'd rather not create a hole, but certainly he can't get top three LT money right now. More like 5th to 10th best.gunn34, toto, oakelmpine and 1 other person like this. -
He's been getting abused today. Hopefully he picks his game up.

I think individuals who want the Dolphins to sign him to a new long term contract just aren't watching how he has played in recent years. Right now he is no better than an average LT in the NFL. He isn't explosive off the ball in the running game and he is beat on two or three passing plays in every game. If he agrees to sign for a contract which would put him in the middle of the range for LT's in the NFL, fine, sign him. If he is looking to be paid as one of the top LT's in the NFL, he needs to go somewhere else for that type money.

We might want to put the money into making the secondary better.
They need a lot of help this offseason.gunn34 and oakelmpine like this. -
Jake has better be willing to settle for a modest new contract, or you let him walk. He should be dominating this season to earn that new contract -and he has been on a doward spiral.

He has eight games to show he's worth that big contract or he can walk, he has been terrible this season.

Might have to try Martin out at LT and draft a solid RT in this draft. If Martin is better on the left than the right then we can manage with him. It'd free up $10 million or so in expected expenditure not resigning Long and could net us a solid draft pick with Long gone eh?
-
Long if we can get a very favorable contract then sure. I just hope it's injuries and he'll make a return to form next year (gotta hope). But Sean Smith has to go. Let him go to FA and sign a better CB off FA instead.

He's had legitimately one bad game this year- This one. It's about his second of his career where he wasn't hurt.
There's an argument that you should franchise him rather than sign him to a long-term contract to make sure a "pretty good" rather than elite year isn't a fluke, but this is pretty silly.
If you think he's been bad, or even average overall this year, you don't know what you are talking about, pretty much end of story.Ohio Fanatic likes this. -

Doesn't Long currently make as much as the Patriots entire starting offensive line? Sorry, but he's got to go. You shouldn't pay that much for an OL who isn't the single best one in the NFL.

Jake isnt the only offensive tackle havinng a bad year. Seattles Russell Okung has gotten the mostpenalties of any ot in the league .
I tried to voice my displeasure with taking any offensive lineman in rd 1 because they dont touch the ball. this team seems to be the dumbest when it comes to draft picks . we always seem to screw ouselves with skill players . we could have had Patrick Willis the linebacker but noooooo we got Ginn .
this team needs to get serious about aquiring talent if we want to do well. -

I honestly don't believe that even the best LT in the history of the game deserves the salary Jake will likely command. It's just not an impact position anymore IMO with the way defenses and offenses approach the game.

There was a couple other times they ran that same bit where they had DT pick up the outside rusher. Those ones at least worked though. -

Letting Sean Smith, as bad as he can be at times, wood be a mistake. We don't need to create more holes. Sean Smith is a good corner, he is just not a shut down corner.
I'd franchise Long as well. Again, don't create holes.
Use our cap space and draft picks to get a pair of corners, move Marshall to safety (Clemons is rubbish), pass rushers, a guard, a receiver and a tight end (depending on Egnew).Ozzy likes this. -

Unless you have a much better viable left tackle than Long has been with his ups and downs you have to sign him.. We have to many other holes to fill this offseason.

Tanny is taking 4 monster shots a game and in the 2 min drill today he finally showed effects of it getting happy feet for the 1st time Oline needs to step it up

Even then, you've got to block what the play is even if it's a bad result. It's perfectly possible for a reasonably called play to have that result. -
And I don't think we're sure Jonathan Martin is a competent RT right now, much less a replacement for Jake Long.
