Why?
1) 4-4 isn't horrible, and most people assumed it's where we'd be. But, they also assumed one of our wins would be against Jets or Pats. The Dolphins have lost all 4 games to AFC Teams-and the teams currently sitting in the playoff spots. Dolphins would need one of those teams to collapse to have a prayer.
2)Offense is battling out with the Carolina Panthers for the worst scoring offense in the league. Man, too bad we don't play them, that would be quite the 6-3 barnburner. 1 TD a game is all I expect at this point. We scored more points during the Wannstedt/Fielder/Ray Lucas years.
3)2 games behind the Jets and Patriots, and even beating them both may not be enough since we look SOL in Tiebreakers, unless the Dolphins magically run the table with this MVP kicker.
4)Is it just me or have they gotten progressively worse since 2008? I've been a Henne supporter but he has yet to win a game for the Dolphins in 2010. You could argue the Packers game, but Carpenter had more points in that one as well.
Now, beating the Titans would help calm everyone, but a loss would pretty much end it to go 0-5 against the AFC Playoff contenders. And oh yeah, after the Titans picked up Moss, losing to them would turn a large part of the fans against our front office. Our offense has been anemic at scoring, losing to Moss' new team when we could've had him could put the nail in.
What a nice day, now the 85% of Jets fans all come out of hiding.[not the ones on here, they are good] I looked at my facebook and see all the Jets fans posts which had been mysteriously missing since the Broncos game, until after they won today. Knew the Jets were going to come back when the Lions decided to pass on 3rd down instead of run the clock.

No the playoffs arent done

Well I wouldn't go THAT far. I'm the "Never say Never" type of person, but man this looks bad. Having to hope for a Ravens/Steelers/Patriots collapse is a lot of bad news for us.
It's always possible the Jets could though. I actually think the Patriots are most likely to collapse though. -
It was done after we lost to the Pats, but its really official now. I still want to fight and win games though, I still don't like losing games on purpose, its just not the right thing to do.

I think Tony Sparano's job is pretty much gone at this point. Possibly Ireland too.

Kansas City in two years has a team and will win before we do. I agree we need to be patient, but how many years have we been told to "wait and be patient" and are told to keep paying premium prices for tickets.dolfan32323, Itsdahumidity and Rick 1966 like this. -
Its going to take 11 wins to get into the playoffs this year. That means we have to win every game but 1 from here on out. Sorry I just dont see that happening. Especially when even if it does only take 10 wins we have losses to everybody that we would probably tie with.
-
I think Ireland's hit on far too many picks to be on the hot seat. It was his call to go with Jake Long (Parcells wanted Chris Long), Vontae Davis, he found Bess, Carpenter, and Cam Wake. I think he's safe for sure.Dolfan330 and BlameItOnTheHenne like this. -
The Pats just lost to the Browns. The Jests nearly lost to the Lions. We are 2 games out with 8 left.
The playoffs aren't done, but we do need to be more consistent. -
Stats told me all of this..DolfanJake likes this. -

What kills me is the fact that there are no "elite" teams in the NFL. Just real good ones and we still can't beat them. Sometimes don't even belong on the same field based on lack of performance.
I'm glad you brought up KC. And what about Tampa & Cleveland? These young teams have new faces staff/FO/personnel yet, are putting up points.DolfanJake likes this. -
History says we're done. And I haven't seen anything from this team that suggests this particular year will be any different.DolfanJake likes this. -
A little eye opening...
Here the QB's that have faced the Ravens this year and how they did.
Sanchez- 47% comp, 74yds, 0 TD, 0 INT
Palmer- 45% comp, 167yds, 0 TD, 0 INT
Wallace- 75% comp, 141yds, 1TD, 0 INT
Batch- 57% comp, 141yds, 0 TD, 1 INT
Orton- 60% comp, 314yds, 2 TD, 0 INT
Brady- 61% comp, 282yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Fitz- 67% comp, 314, 4TD, 2 INT, 106
Henne- 64%, 231, 0 TD, 3 INT
Looks as if the Ravens typically just don't let QB's have good games. -
At 4-4 the season is still salvageable IMO. Having said that, 2-4 in the conference, and 1-2 in the division is not good. At this point, I do think it's sink or swim for this FO. If this team tanks the second half (which is a real possibility), then another house cleaning could very well be in store. But, if this team plays and finishes strong, Ross may be incline to give Sparano/Ireland one more (and last) year to show they can "git 'r done."
Yes sir, I think the second half of this season will be very interesting indeed.BlameItOnTheHenne, DolfanJake and frozenfin like this. -
Given my druthers, I would rather hire an up and coming coordinator than a retread, even one with a resumee as impressive as Cowher's. -
I'm not giving up just yet. We still play the Titans, Raiders, Jets, and Pats. A good deal of our own fate is still in our own hands. You never know what team is going to have an epic meltdown... Jets were shutout after their bye and then barely came back through overtime against the Lions. I have my eyes on them.
The game today was the one I felt least confident about all year. The rest of the games this year are all winnable if mistakes are limited and opportunities are taken advantage of.
Look at next week's games... Titans at Fins, Jets at Browns, Pats at Steelers, Ravens at Falcons. Jets have not impressed the last two weeks despite getting a W against Detroit today against the Browns who just embarassed the Saints and Patriots. Ravens going on the road in a short week against one of the top two NFC teams so far this year who are very strong at home in Atlanta. And someone has to lose in Pittsburgh on Sunday night.
Standings in a week could look something like this:
Jets 6-3
Pats 6-3
Fins 5-4
Steelers 7-2
Ravens 6-3
Colts 7-2 or 6-3
Titans 5-4
Texans or Jags 5-4
Chiefs 7-2 or 6-3
Raiders 4-5
Chargers 4-5
A win against Tennessee and we're still in the thick of things, the AFC is insanely crowded this week and no games are to be phoned in with the Browns on a dominating winning streak and the Bills playing everyone close.
Then if we can hold off the Bears, Raiders, and the Browns... then the Jets game on Dec 12 will be very meaningful. Even if we drop one of those games, depending on how other teams shake out it wouldn't be the end of the world. The AFC South still have a ton of divisional games to knock each other out... Colts and Titans have yet to do battle in 2010.
However... if Tennessee takes us next week and we fall to 4-5, that's when it might be fair to throw in the playoffs towel. -
We have become the new Arizona Cardinals ! :pity: -
I'm not sure who I'd look at as an OC though if you keep Sparano. -
-
I think they playoffs will definitely still be there and we'll all be watching from our couch. Unfortunately, so will the Miami Dolphins staff and personnel.

pretty much

Aside from the bizarre collapse we had against NE - this is the first time that we got our A@# kicked.
Never say never but I am now officially concerned. First of all I now agree our offensive playcalling is awful - I am so sick of Henne doing a playfake (which I'm sure is the playcall) when we are clearly in "come back mode" or running our 2 minute offense, it's pointless.
I've been backing Henne all year and I think he should be allowed to develop. The pass to Fasano was back-breaking and from my perspective it appeared that the pass was wobbling and throw extremely poorly. I feel like Henne lost credibility with his teammates after that play. Just my opinion based on watching Fasano return to the sideline after the play.
Playoffs are very unlikely unless the Jets and Pats both implode, again I like Sparano as our Head Coach not so sure I'm liking Henning's playcalling - why did we stop running the ball?
I didn't think we would win all of our games on the road - I was hoping we would win this game as losing more games in the AFC is going to hurt any chances.
Back to Back games against teams coming off bye weeks we really got screwed this season with our scheduling. -
The Dolphins best hope is that the Browns exposed the Patriots and Miami can catch up with them. It's easier said then done though. I just thought how the Steelers game is going to be tough for the Patriots, a loss by them and a win by the Dolphins put Miami back in some good position to steal a WC spot, considering the worst is behind us.
I'm actually starting to think this "AFC Beast" division doesn't have any teams that have what it takes to win the Super Bowl. It's still early and any team can get hot and go on a big winning streak, but we'll see. -
The Dolphins can afford to lose maybe 1 or 2 more games to be in the playoff picture and those losses cant come from jest or the pats but to be honest the football your watch the Dolphins play right now why would you want to be in the playoffs? All it would be is just a low down dirty asswhoopin like you saw today against a playoff caliber team that knows how to execute and takes chances.
-
Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy you guys lost, but I never count you guys out.
-
Jeff Ireland is the BEST in the league, repeat the BEST in the league at talent scouting, he aint going nowhere unless he wants to. Stephen Ross would be ******ed to let him go, Ireland head of football ops, im ok with that. IF Ireland says Sparano goes im good with that too. But Cowher better be the replacement lol.
-
My caveats though:
- Is Gruden too proud to be an OC at first to get back in the league? I think
you have to ask, even though we know what the answer is.
- Leave Mike Nolan in charge of the defense. Plain and simple.
- Can he make Henne work in his offense and/or tailor the offense to fit Henne's game? I feel like drafting a QB would be starting all over offensively while the defense (despite today's performance) looks like it is on the cusp of being a really, really good unit.
- As an aside, I think it'd be pretty cool to have a fellow UD Flyer coaching the Dolphins. -
