Have said it since week one; Earl Mitchell has been hot garbage this year and Miami need to get him off the field as much as they can and let Jordan Phillips develop.

 

From those statistics it appears that DL or ILB could be top priority with our first rounder this year. Actually, there are about 10 different ways we could go with that pick and all of them valid.

 

Philips reminds me of Soliai in his rookie year: Not ready.

Nothing Wake does bothers me.

 

Let's face facts. Suh and Jones are the only above average players on the defensive side of the ball since Wake went down. Grimes got toasted by Watkins. There may be some young talent but it has't shown up yet.

We have been needing to draft ILB since Crowder ran his truck off the road. Misi was the only valid attempt. MLBs are like QBs. Good teams draft one every year.

Ouch, those are some really damning numbers for the defense. Terrible, just terrible.

 

Jaylon Smith is the best linebacker prospect in this draft. In fact, he's the best defensive player in this draft. He is a perfect fit on this team and he should be the target to get. If Ross truly wants to make a splash this offseason, it should be in the draft, and getting him would be a huge start. I expect us to realistically finish at about 5-11, which would put us in a decent position to get him.

 

I blame the Christmas tree in the FO, he ruined the Jets and then Mr I don't know football hires him to run the Fins.

I'm not sure that's really a good spot to put the blame. Those players, underperforming right now were here before Tannenbaum. He only got involved with things late last year, or early in the offseason, or whenever it was. You can only turn over so many parts at a time.

 

Of course there is some truth to what you're saying, but who's idea was it to basically ignore the Oline, LBs and RCB? These were major ?s this year and he ignored them, or they were an after thought, and now, not surprisingly, these areas remain as problems that need to be fixed.

Areas he targeted and massively overhauled were WR/TE and DT, the 2 best WRs on the team were here last year, Clay>Cameron, and the DT position is worse outside of the massively overpaid Suh, and possibly the rookie Phillips, but that pick should have been used on an OG, most of the top rated OGs were still available when we made that pick.

So I agree that you can't blame him for everything, but I blame him for these things, with the exception of Suh, I fully believe that was a Ross decision to sell tickets, and it worked but it was a very short sighted decision imo.

 

I agree that at this point the null hypothesis should be that Tannenbaum will probably run the team into the ground with bad pickups but that's not decided yet so I'll hold off blame for now.

Anyway, I think it's clear that Miami (1) Miami took the strong defensive roster they'd built under Ireland/Sparano and traded it for a rather decent looking offensive roster and (2) that they desperately need a serious overhaul in talent and coaching on the defensive side of the ball. In reality, I'm content with everything on offense except for the Guards. What needs to happen is for a qualified DC or defensive-minded HC to come in and rebuild the defense.

I'm a fan of Vic Fangio. I was curious when Gruden said the other night that his scheme highlights the SS. We know Jones is a good player and that Fangio has worked with elite DTs before. I wonder if there's any truth to what Gruden said or what it means exactly?

 

Misi wasn't even an attempt. He was a college tweener DE we made OLB full-time then made an ILB.

 

While I disagree that MLB is the most glaring need, I'm intrigued by a few guys. Any in particular you like DJ?

 

In other news, Kendall Langford has never missed an NFL game.

 

Everything that's happened under Ross has been to sell tickets and make more money. Tried to get public funding, focused on bringing a Super Bowl to his stadium, drafting Tannehill when we needed help all over, trading up to draft Dion Jordan, signing Mike Wallace and Ndamukong Suh in the offseason.

Trading down in the draft to up your chances of hitting on picks, taking chances on guys bad for PR, retaining several above average players for the same price as a single blockbuster signing isn't making a splash or good for advertising.

Using PFF rankings to facilitate a hypothesis regarding the defensive futility may not be a good idea. Those stats are subjective at best, and are done by people who are likely less qualified than several people inhabiting this site.

 

Even Reshad was bad in run support last week. Shady ran right at him on the first TD and he got blocked by Robert Woods on the edge. Then he seemed to misread the second one and ended up on the wrong side of the field. Not good.

 

I have a thing Ro where I will not watch film from the start of the season until the the team is out of the playoff hunt..once their eliminated its offseason time..Ive watched the top guys but ill wait.

So are you trying to say we don't need ILB's on our defense that are better than our current/recent historical unit(s)?

And where in Europe? Just curious. Germany is a very progressive country. Sweden has the happiest people on Earth supposedly. Where is your Eutopia Con? I know some back road border crossings in to Canada, but I don't think life is any better there. Different, and we have family so if we had to run it would be OK.

 

our defense is definitely the problem with our team going into the 2016 season. the question becomes do you finish the job building the great offense that sells tickets or do you leave it as is and concentrate on defense next year? i would finish the job on offense and start the process on defense. draft an OT in the first round and play him at OG his first year. this way we have a backup for albert if he gets hurt again and also we have the eventual replacement for him. 2nd through the rest of the draft you can spend on defense. target getting at least one player at every level of the defense (dl, lb, db) between free agency and the draft we have to get four avg to good starters. thats is tannenbaum's mission. if he fails he must be fired

 

Wonder how Starks and Odrick are graded against the run. Hope it was worth it to upgrade them.......

 

Agreed however, our defense sucks.......so there has to be SOME truth to that, regardless of "rankings" etc.

 

I believe they had Koa Misi ranked very high in their grades as linebacker a couple weeks ago for this season. So, yeah, I'm finding that site to be less reliable.

 

PFF has too many head scratching rankings. I don't know who grades for them but there are some staff that really need to be replaced. Either that or their formulas are garbage

 

I was under the impression that they were entirely subjective grades. No formulas.

I appreciate the effort and idea. A trained eye is the best way to judge the effectiveness of a player that doesn't show up on the stat sheet. But like you said, there are some real head-scratchers.

We have the wrong type of LB's IMHO for the line we have. The only one who really fits is Jenkins. Find another one like him for the other side and the ILB issue is mitigated, especially in the passing game.

 

Guard, followed by Mike, followed by DB

 

Just need to finish the damned line. Cant ignore that. After line go all defense

 

There is a plethora of VERY good/solid DBs coming into FA at the end of this year. Could easily fill CB/S spots without breaking the bank, and draft a youngster or two. I think also need 2 LBs and a few DEs, particularly if Vernon isn't in the plans. I'd personally like to see:

1. DE (Emmanual Ogbah please?!?!)
2. OT
3. LB
4. S
5. CB
6. LB
7. DL

Or some close variation to that.

If we draft another WR or RB I'll break something.

Edit: I'm not ignoring OG...I'd expect the OT to groom under Albert at G for a time, and there are always decent/good guards in FA at a decent price...we missed on a few last year because, IMO, we were too wrapped up in figuring out how to bring in Suh, possibly keep Clay, and a few other moves (including Mathis, though more expensive). There were some good ones that it crushed me to see sign with others when we had such a glaring, OBVIOUS need.

 

I would like to go to Italy I think, food wine and beautiful beaches. Spain and France are a little tumultuous with their politics, kinda schizo actually but the Mediterranean coastline is the cradle of modern civilization. It would be cool to explore, but I like livin in the USA, even with its flaws. Trade offs in life eh?!

 

Been to both, and every other country in Mediterranean Europe. Some beautiful scenery in a few of those countries...no question...Greece, Italy, France, Portugal...but no better than you can find in America. Seen over 50 countries (and 46 states, working on the other 4, all in the continental), would only pick 1 to live in...the good old U.S. of A., Greece is a fairly distant 2nd.

You should definitely visit Italy. Religion aside, I think everyone should visit Rome and the Vatican...simply amazing experience. :up:

 

I just noticed something. Reshad Jones is 4th in the NFL in tackles. Every other top five leader in tackles is a linebacker.

Our DL and LBs as a whole absolutely suck.

Yep, and now people are seeing why I almost always protest big signings. We've let go of so much talent since Philbin's arrival, it's ridiculous. The guy was like Chip Kelly minus the football mind.

We used to have Dansby, Soliai, Starks, Odrick, Sean Smith, Vontae Davis. Who else am I missing?

That's just the defensive side of the ball. We had depth across the board and there was room for improvement.

Now those guys are gone and we put a ton of cash into a single guy and expected to have a good defense. This isn't basketball.

When was the last time we could feel good about our LB core? We passed on Kuechly for a QB and didn't develop him and added years to the regimes tenure. Draft some GD Lbs please.
