As Kevin Coyle put it today during his question and answer period, the reason Jordan was only in on 9 snaps was due to Tampa running the ball so much. That Dion's game this year is not to defend the run, that is not his strength. That he is only around to rush the passer. I'm paraphrasing what Coyle said but that was essentially it.
Here are the exact quotes:
Andrew Abramson @AbramsonPBP 3h
Coyle on Dion Jordan: Dion is not going to be in there in games when teams are slugging it out, running the football
Andrew Abramson @AbramsonPBP 3h
Coyle: that's not Dions strength at this point in time. That's not going to change this season.
Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley 3h
Coyle says that Jordan won't be on field when teams are "slugging it out, running the football. ... That's not going to change this season."
Reaction: Are you ****ting me? Are you really saying that in front of the rest of the league? This is your #3 overall draft pick!! The guy you traded up for. And now comes the realization that he is limited and can't play the run (better than say Trusnick). Now it's one thing to say internally, "that Dion Jordan, he's not 100% this season due to the shoulder. We should limit his exposure in obvious run downs. " But to use that as an excuse to why he's not getting snaps... I'm at a loss for words here... well not really, i could go on talking all day. Why don't you just put placards around your players necks when they take the field that tell the opposition what their weaknesses are.
Jordan should be put on IR, but then that would make Ireland look bad and we can't have that at the moment.

Trusnick is an OLB. Well that is at least what he tries to play.gilv13, Steve-Mo, GMJohnson and 1 other person like this. -
I do not agree with their assessment. Other than thinking that Luck threw the ball, Jordan looks like their best tackler.cuchulainn and ToddPhin like this. -

I think he should, however I am not a defensive coordinatorUnlucky 13 likes this. -
In the limited showing I have seen of dion Jordan playing in open space this year I have been thoroughly impressed. But that's just me and I don't get to see him practice. I'm not sure why he isn't given the opportunity to play more than just pass rush DE.

My goodness... I hope someone can post a video montage of Trusnick vs run plays last night. Jonathan Martin's mom should represent him for getting his *** handed to him on the field.

I do not agree with the idea that he is bad against the run or that he should be on IR. -

So......we traded up for a player that we simply don't know how to use or doesn't fit our scheme? He needs to play, at this point either put him on the IR and get him healthy if thats the issue or play him and let him make mistakes. He cannot be worse against the run than the rest of our team was last night.

The guy makes plays every time he's in the game. He's forced two picks already.

There is a really nothing here.
Teams do not (or rather should not) give other teams insight on personnel packaging regarding players. But is Dion Jordan an important cog right now? Not really. It seems Coyle is simply just being up front. Other teams probably already know this.
Remember how bad Wake was in his first couple of seasons against the run? Jordan is a pass rush specialist. Until he becomes a more complete player, he is purely situational.
I suspect when the Dolphins are truly out of the playoff hunt, he will get more reps. -
Then why wouldn't they stick him at Lb?

I've been espousing the defensive weaknesses since week 3. These weaknesses won't go away so long as Kevin Coyle is running this defense.

teams pass on NON obvious passing downs, coyle knows this right?
Have you ever noticed we pretty much never get pressure unless it's on obvious passing downs?
I hate this team :cry:Paul 13 likes this. -
Literally no one will ever say, "Yeah, Cam Wake was awesome, but he struggled against the run for a year." Except Omar Kelly.djphinfan likes this. -
No sh-t Tampa was trying to run on us and succeeded. Why wouldn't they when we have Misi injured and Coyle rolling with the weaker duo of Vernon & Trusnik on the right side and leaving Starks on the bench? :pity: Having Trunsnik on the field instead of Starks is a downgrade. Had Coyle wisely went with Wake-Starks-Soliai-Odrick up front and Vernon at OLB, there would've been minimal gains on the ground, leaving Jordan with plenty of 2nd/3rd & long opportunities to rush the passer. Tampa already had 10 points on the board before he figured that out.
The second answer is- who forced you to pigeonhole Jordan at end and put yourself in the position to choose Jason fuggin Trusnik to start at the hybrid OLB position over a top 3 overall pick who was arguably... get this... the draft's best hybrid DE/OLB? No one to blame but yourself, Coyle.joenhre, Paul 13, DePhinistr8 and 3 others like this. -
I think Dion Jordan would be best suited in the role that has never been labeled..I think he will be a better all around player and more dangerous to an offense that way then if he were just a def end..
Unleash the freestyler baby.. -
Coyle deserves to be slapped for opting for Vernon & Trusnik on the field instead of Starks & Jordan.djphinfan likes this. -
It's why I've been banging the drum so hard for a switch back to the 3-4. You can also incorporate Olivier Vernon or Koa Misi. You can also let Vernon do what he's been doing in sub packages, and he's even decent moving in reverse. In the mean time, you can even simplify things and keep Jordan on the right side and Wake on the left, as they're respectively accustomed to, at least at the moment.
It's such a misuse of resources.Paul 13, maynard, djphinfan and 1 other person like this.
