The major thing I take away from the article is these kids need a mentor even though Wake is on the team.

That tells me Wake is either an introvert or d-bag. I'm guessing an introvert. That also means he's not a leader.

 

We need more introverts like him.

I'm not sure about that. Philbin praised him before and said shortly after the season that Kaddu is one of the players he likes a lot and expects big things from him.

 

You have Wake sitting over there who could take both of these kids under his wing. I don't understand the "veteran" comments because they have one of the best already on the team.

 

FTR, I'm not knocking the guy. I just know people have a tendency to assign traits to good players they may not have, because fans inherently want to think their heroes are good at everything.

Like when people talk about the leadership void that this off season has created and the first name they mention to become a leader is Wake. I don't think Wake is a leader, in fact I think he's uncomfortable in that role or any role that has him speaking up. He was barely on HK. He barely does interviews. He wasn't already part of the leadership council even though he's one of the more senior players with the biggest name.

 

I am, when a guy can legitimately get after the Qb a way is found to get them into those situations.

He played 4 games on ST last yr, more than likely with -0- passrushes.

 

He had at least one pass rush

 

Introverts can be leaders. They can lead by example and they can teach in their low key ways. They may also be a vocal leader, but may need some time away to get energized. Extroverts I know have told me they want to talk more after being motivational. It builds them up. Introverts need a break from being vocal leaders because they are zapped a little. The notion introverts can not be leaders is not accurate.

 

As I said, it makes no sense that you have Wake and you need mentoring for two young kids and are not getting it. If I were Joe I would sit down with Wake, Vernon, and Kaddu and set that expectation now.

I'm saying Wake is a keep to himself kind of guy. I don't think he's the type to take a guy under his wing. Sure people can learn by watching him, but that's not mentoring and that's not being a leader.

 

Not everyone is equipped to mentor or be a leader. Trying to force Wake to be that is detrimental to all parties.

I understand leadership is more than being an example. I know Wake would have to be vocal and a teacher. I believe someone needs to foster that relationship between he and the kids, whether that be a position coach or Joe himself.

 

I don't know that I fully agree with you on that. I think there are more subtle ways to foster that without "forcing it" .

In the mean time, if they need a teacher, vocal mentor for those two, who might that be at this point? Among the free agents who best fits that?

Never believe what coaches say, watch actions instead, this is why they chase reporters from buildings when real practices happen

 

Subtle or not, its forcing someone to be something they are not. It seems pointless to do that on a football team. There's a window of opportunity, because of the nature of the business, where certain players are together on the same team. If that's the window you have for a player(s) to be mentored by another, then you should make sure that time isn't wasted with a mentor who has to be mentored to be a mentor.

 

I think that's why the Dolphins are interested in the older, veteran pass rushers. They seem to like Kaddu a lot, and I think Shelby and Vernon have potential as well.

 

Vernon is safe, but I certainly could see them trying to find an upgrade over Shelby (in the draft I mean).

 

It isn't rare for a player to have little time in his first season and then have more time in his second.

 

Especially a later pick. Clemons and Jones didn't play in every game as rookies either (and unlike Kaddu, they were on the 53 all season).

So Philbin is talking Kaddu up in order to use him as a bargaining chip in free agent pass rush negotiations? Or is there another reason he would be dishonest about Kaddu's potential?

 

Isn't Wake a guy who excels by effort and physicality, more so than technique? I'm not seeing how that would translate as a mentor.

 

It also could be that the past few seasons Wake didn't have to be the leader because of Burnett, Dansby, Long and Bush...now those guys are gone...he may step it up, but if he's been a quieter type of leader so far, it's because he hasn't really had to be that guy...We'll see, but bashing the guy and saying he's not a vocal leader is pretty naive on our parts not being privy to all the information about the guy...

There has been talk all offseason how Vernon has been working with Wake. How is that not mentorship at least. For anyone to be looking in from the outside will have no clue who the leaders are. Derrick Shelby could be a natural leader for all we know.

 

Not calling you a liar, but I have not heard this talk about them working together this offseason. Do you have a link?

I think this is the time of year that a lot of young players are talked about with the "P" word... They drafted the kid last year and want him to succeed... All these kids they're referring to (Tanny, Martin, Kaddu, Miller, OV) theoretically should improve going from their rookie to second year, provided they've put the time in during the season last year and this offseason. Once the OTAs and such begin, we'll see more but keep in mind that we hear this stuff every offseason about how guys are going to improve...
