Unless gamestop is running a trade in promo,your prolly better off selling it on craigslist. Gamestop never gives good money on trade ins usually. I only resort to using trade ins at gamestop when I can't sell my games on craigslist.

I ask because if you didnt do the last PSN update my buddy might be interested. He has a slim but wants to chip it... But he can't because he did the latest update.

 

If you haven’t run the system update within the last 2-3 weeks then you don’t have the latest firmware that Mor is talking about.

Go to Settings -> System Settings -> System Information. If System Software reports Version 3.50, then you have the latest firmware and it’s not what Mor’s friend is looking for.

As for getting a PS3 Slim, I have to admit I don’t see the point if you already have a PS3. Unless you really, really need to cut electricity bills, or you just want a console that doesn’t double as a space heater (and with a Carolina winter coming up, why not?! :lol:) then I don’t see a point.

 

Or if you travel a lot, as it is a lot easier to haul the Slim around. Or if you want to bitstream HD audio to an AVR.

 

Don’t the non-slim PS3s output bitstream audio? I could swear they did. If not, then that’s a good reason. The traveling… well, I’ve never known anyone who totes their PS3 around as if it were a DS, but you never know.

I’m sure Sony will sell you a warranty for the current PS3.

The quickest way to make Blu-Ray movies look better is to get a new TV. :lol: The truly best route is for studios to improve their encoding procedures, since some are better than others at the process. But that’s not controllable by us, so again, new TV > new PS3 for image quality.

 

Well for example, I travel at least 2 weeks a month on average, and pretty much always bring a system with me for something to do when I'm not working. Having a smaller & lighter system is therefore very beneficial to me.

The non-slims can bitstream iirc, but I know they can't bitstream the HD codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio). Of course if you're already using an HDMI cable to an AVR it really doesn't matter if you bitstream or use LPCM.

 

The security of a newer system is a valid reason to trade up IMO, but no the slim won't look any better on your TV.

Dumb question(s), but what video cables are you using and what video outputs do you have set-up for your tv?

That’s probably where my confusion comes from, the specific codecs being bitstreamed. Doesn’t matter to me since I just run my PS3 directly into my TV via HDMI (hey, times are tough…), but that’s an important distinction if Chris has any ambition to create or augment a home theater. Since his wife wants better Blu-Ray picture quality, maybe he can sell her on a 3D HDTV and a mid-range receiver. :shifty:

A mid range AVR would be my suggestion to anyone looking for a better movie experience(assuming they don't have one), but like I said bitstreaming is unnecessary if your AVR can handle LPCM (which almost all HDMI equipped ones nowadays can).

 

So leave the PS3 at home. :up:

See, Chris, this is the perfect time to convince the wife that to make Blu-Rays look better, you really need a 3D-capable HDTV, a 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound setup, and a good receiver to run everything. :shifty:
