Wow. Can't believe there isn't a single thread on the 8.8 earthquake in Chile!
The last time a quake of this magnitude hit Chile, Hawaii was hit with a tsunami that killed 68 people.
Warning is on for the entire West Coast as well, and Alaska.
I'd stay away from low-lying coastal areas today from Noon on.

Everybody within warnings reach, please be careful.
I am honestly surprised the death toll in Chili isn't MUCH higher :pity:alen1 likes this. -

TALCA, Chile – A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.
Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Chile in 50 years and one of the strongest ever measured anywhere. President-elect Sebastian Pinera said more than 120 people died, but that number was rising quickly.
The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east.

in all seriousness this could be real bad for Hawaii... estimating 6 to 12 foot waves. I live on the CA coast (well not on the coast, but 12 miles inland) and we've had warnings here before due to huge quakes in Asia and Alaska. Yet nothing that large has ever come close to the CA coast since I've been living here (1980). Good thing though is that they have time to get to higher ground. Unlike those poor people in Indonesia back in 2004.unluckyluciano likes this. -

Nabs ... you think the Tsunami is going to hit as far north as you?
For those of you that have a hard time understanding how big this thing is, let me put it this way:
The 1989 Bay Area Quake came in at an impressive 6.9 on the Richter Scale. This beast came in at 8.8. In other words, it's roughly 1000 times more powerful than the one from 1989.NaboCane likes this. -
Seattle proper is located within Elliott Bay and should see rises in normal tide levels but hopefully not much more than that.Vengeful Odin likes this. -

You'd also think this would affect Southern California, like San Diego and San Jose, no?NaboCane likes this. -
Another concern is that if water rises quickly at the mouth of the Columbia River, Portland, OR could see some secondary flooding. -

Moving to higher ground right now. Man it is eerie the bay behind my house looks like a huge pane of glass. Water still receding and low tide ended about 30 min ago. I'll try to keep info coming in when convienent.
