Assuming Carey is cut, Can we stop blowing up our Oline and then later in the season regretting that fact?!...

 

There's been a lot of haranguing to the start of this season and Training Camp. I've gotta be honest if we straight up released Vernon Carey for Marc Columbo I might be right there with the rest of the fan base.

Let's just hope that Carey messed up in some way and this is a "message" - not a knee-jerk move that's going to open up a gaping hole on the right side of our line.

Maybe we're on a deadline from trying to sign a decent FA and need the cap room.

 

This would be lunacy. Carey to Columbo would be a massive downgrade and will get our QB killed.

 

Leopards don't change their spots, my friends. A Tony Sparano team will reconstruct its Oline majorly... every single season, and late through camp.

Sometimes being an Oline coach means you can't stop messing with the Oline.

Columbo would not be considered an upgrade over Carey. That said, maybe with Jake hurting, they want to rest Vernon's back so they don;t lose both tackles.

 

Shuffling an Oline is like smack for Sparano. No way he quits.

 

I really hope is only something along those lines. If it's not, do we really have anyone that can take Carey's place at his level? I don't believe so.

 

Whomever trades for him at his current salary is overspending.

Doesn't he only have something like 4 years left at $15 million total? That's not huge money at all for a good solid RT. He's expensive to us a bit cause of his cap hit, but his base salaries for another team would be chump change really. Heck that's Brad Smith Buffalo money ;p

 

lol Don't try to compare salary logic with what the Bills do with their money.

I told my buddy who's a Bills fan that they just put $2k rims on a $200 car with that Smith acquisition.


Can't lie though, this OL juggling is concerning.

 

I think were just panicking some. An OL junkie like Sparano would not replace Carey with Columbo. Would be pure madness.

 

It's closer to 4 years for another $20 million.

This year he's making $4.15.

 

No question, but you never know.

 

Hard to imagine with Long's injury and Colombo's injury history releasing Carey is an option at this point. Carey is one of the better RT in the league.

The only way I could see it happening is if they pulled out a really solid RT out of their *** somewhere ala Burnett with Crowder. Is there even a decent RT left on the market?

 

Know what I'm noticing??? That article shows THREE guys got their long term contracts done together, at the same time...

If Carey gets shipped out tonight or tomorrow, I'll be on a chopping-block watch for Yeremiah Bell. Something about the way all three contracts were done may tie them together, or maybe it's coincidence. Maybe the regime wants to shed those deals because something in their wording was okay pre-new CBA but doesn;t suit the regime now that the rules have changed so they want those deals killed. I don;t know. Just know that if Carey goes, that'll be 2/3 guys who had their similar long term contracts done in the same batch of signings.

Anyways, let's see if Vernon goes.

 

Any idea where Miami stands with the salary cap...heard they were at $5-7 million under before the Fields-Colombo-JT signing. Miami did just release Dobbins as well freeing up $1.5 million.

I don;t know for sure, but I know that those base salary figures for Vernon did not include bonuses and incentives which may have been up to another 40% more. I mean, those add up to a contract in the 20's and his overall contract was announced as 42 mil or something, so clearly a LOT more money could be added to that base 2011 salary, and maybe that's their concern?

 

God help us all if Colombo ends up starting..

 

Remember Wade Smith at tackle? Yah...this will be worse.

 

That is a bargain. A bargain. try to get a performer like Carey for those numbers at a tackle spot.

 

That's over reacting, I think. I'm not happy about the idea of going from Carey to Columbo, but Columbo is a proven starter i thei league, plus it is a RT we are talking about, so it's less of an impact on Henne (not the blindsside, plus you won;t get the best passrusher on that side, plus you usually have TE help, maybe even RB help if necessary).

Not the end of the world, but not an imporvement.

Or, maybe Vernon just has the night off, guys! Seriously.. Maybe Tony wanted a look at some other guys because he has so little time to make assessments. he knows what he has in Vernon, so he let's Vernon rest his back (no sense having two nicked up tackles, since Jake's already hurt) and lets some other guys audition for 2nd and 3rd string.

Those guys need reps more than Vernon does.

 

Columbo was one of the worse pass blocking tackles in the league. Has regressed the past 2 years and folks were concerned he wasn't good enough to even be a swing tackle backup. So I hope to god it truly is just a personal night for Carey.

 

Well, those numbers, added up, come in at MUCH less than the reported $42mil value of the contract, so assume a lot of bonuses and incentives. I'd guess Vernon's real take-home pay in 2011 would look more like $5.5-6 million. Not sure how that works on the cap.

Plus his signing bonus was $12 mil, according to that article. I think that gets amortized across the contract for cap purposes, does it not?

Its about $5M a year through 2013.

But Ryan Diem just took a pay cut in Indy, and the Broncos cut Ryan Harris. Tyson Clabo just signed a deal that will pay him between $4-5M a year. Also consider that hes coming off a knee injury, before which he wasn't even playing very well.

I think they probably went and asked him to take a pay-cut before deciding to cut him. He's just not worth what he's due to make IMO.

I was JUST wondering about this myself, for someone who is by nature an OL coach you think that unit would be the most stable, but it's been by far the most inconsistent, bi-polar crew on our team. I think Sprano has tinkered with it so much that now all it can do is spiral out of control.
