Brings up some of the good things and bad things about Vince. Thing is...one issue I see complained about a lot in defense of Chad Henne is the play-action and how defenders didn't bite on it and so Chad Henne had to take his eyes off the defense without the benefit of them worrying about the run. This was not the case in Tennessee. All defenses keyed on Chris Johnson. He's one of the scariest players in the NFL today because he can kill you with constant 5 to 10 yard runs, OR he can kill you with the 78 yard TD run that goes by in the blink of an eye. The Bucky Brooks clips show this right on the first play he talks about. They should change the title from "All eyes on Vince Young" to "All eyes on Chris Johnson". On that first play you see like 8 guys all take two or three false steps toward Chris Johnson on the play-action. This is the kind of environment in which Young excelled this year. Will he get that kind of environment in Miami, and more importantly if he does not, does he have the strength of character to overcome it?

My answer is no on both counts. But I'll be happy to watch the tape and let him convince me (no pun intended) otherwise.

Not really warming up to him. Just keeping an open mind as far as the video is concerned. Don't really like the guy much at all. In fact, I was just watching the other day the San Diego - Tennessee game, for the purposes of watching Antwan Barnes. Statistically a monster game for Vince. But it seemed like when they faced some adversity and had to fight back from behind in the 4th quarter, Vince goes out of the game with some minor injury. It's one thing if you're Jay Cutler and later the MRIs do reveal that you tore a ligament in your knee or something like that...but this just seemed...blech, bad taste in your mouth. Didn't like how the game was going so he came off "hurt" and watched Kerry Collins try and bring them back from behind. Kerry did engineer a decent comeback attempt, btw. Fell short when Chris Johnson let an easy catch go through his fingers on 4th down near the goal line, needing a touchdown and two point conversion to tie the game.

 

No means no. Please no to VY. I want the Dolphins to win games.

First we gotta get there. But 0-1. If that's going to be a deciding factor in signing a FA QB, we won't sign anyone I guess.

 

Also, he was clearly carried that 2007 season when they were 10-6. Look at his numbers compared to those of the running game. That year they had a great running game. They had the 8th best scoring D that year and the 5th best D (YPG). I mean just looking at it, he has yet to average 200 YPG in a single season. I don't go by QB wins. Those don't take into account the team dynamic. For all the throwing Orton did last year, they finished 4-12. Compare that to say the Seahawks who got 7-9 with weaker QB play.

 

Can't get there with Young, huh?

 

IMO, we could as likely reach the playoffs with VY as we could with Henne. His being 0-1 in the playoffs means little IMO, when compared to his 30-17 regular season record. 1 game isn't enough of a picture to clearly see how good he can or cannot be as a playoff QB.

 

FWIW John Clayton was on ESPN radio last night saying he still saw Miami as a possible destination for VY. He says he hears there is interest , again fwiw.

 

Looking at the video, here's what stands out to me.

The Good:
1. Hyper accurate thrower
2. Good field vision
3. Play maker
4. Dangerous runner

The Bad:
1. Lazy fundamentals
2. Wimpy demeanor
3. Sloppy execution
4. Easy to fool
5. Very bad ball security
6. Late on throws
7. Gets rattled

What a waste of talent.

 

Vince Young is a marvelous waste of talent. Hyper accurate play maker with good field vision and dangerous running ability, but he's lazy, easy to fool, doesn't do his homework (you can see that on tape), he plays like a wimp, able to be rattled, sloppy execution, very bad ball security, late on a lot of throws.

If he ever got his sh-t together he could have his team competing at the highest level. Or he could spearhead a team's glorious fall to ignominy. He's one of those guys wouldn't surprise me if he finally got it together and put together a run at age 30-31 years old, on his 3rd or 4th team. He'd probably start out as a backup, take over for the injured starter, and go on some ridiculous tear and do some damage in the Super Bowl.

I tend to doubt that would be here in Miami.

I've seen the point brought up...what is there to lose? Do we really worry that Vince Young screws up this Vegas projected 5 or 6 win season we have coming up? I hear that. It's a good point. But at the same time...what's the upshot? We really think Vince Young is going to be a better person, start doing his homework and studying defenses, working hard and leading his team to the Super Bowl? Let's say the "win" on the Vince Young gamble comes in the form of a 9-7 record with a first round playoff exit. Then you're stuck playing the "should he stay or should he go" game again, enticed by talent that keeps coming with drawbacks that make you good but not great.

By the way if you think Vince Young is coming to Miami and ends up being Chad Henne's backup...well, unless the lockout does stretch out longer than currently expected...I just don't agree. I think you don't bring in an enigma like Young unless you want to see him play football.

 

I don't believe for one second that this regime would hire Vince Young thinking it's ok if they go through the 2011 season not seeing him play, unless they're on some ridiculous hot streak winning games.

Ummmm, sorry, but you're kinda contradicting yourself right there. Right after saying that you could see him winning a Super Bowl, you ask what is the upshot...I think you answered your own question in the most pro-Vince way possible. And that is exactly why I think he's a good pickup--best case: Super Bowl, worst case: 2-3 mil wasted in rebuilding years. Much better risk/reward than any other FA and probably even a 1st round draft pick (less money and no wasted pick).
Also, related to the worst case, even if he ends up backing up Henne with a terrible attitude, I think there is a much lower chance of him ruining team morale/chemistry here than TN, simple bc he was "The Guy" in TN (Face of the Franchise along with CJ), while in Miami he would just be a high profile "reclamation project" with some relatively low expectations. In other words, it wouldn't be as big of a deal if Miami ditched him at any point..

And a side note fwiw, from ESPN a few days ago: "Last week, ESPN's John Clayton wrote that the Miami Dolphins make logical sense as a destination for quarterback Vince Young, currently under the employ of theTennessee Titans, but expected to be released or traded prior to the 2011 season. The Dolphins are a running team, Clayton argued, and Young is a running QB.Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that an associate of Young's says that the Texas product would be amenable to playing in Miami. Not only that, but Jackson reports that Young is "not out of the question" for the Dolphins.
The concern for the Dolphins could be Young's attitude during his brief NFL career. Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has indicated this offseason that a QB's "accountability and dependability" must be pristine, and this is not an area for Young that is particularly sparkling based on his time in Nashville."

 

What we saw at the end of the video was Fisher wired for the Redskins game. Listening to the comments of the trainer, telling Fisher the situation with Young's thumb injury, it sounded like the only reason he kept Young out of the game was the report of the injury and that when passing on the sidelines, Young was having trouble controlling his accuracy. Fisher didn't keep Young out due to some Ant-VY vendetta, based on what we heard over the mic during the game.
