If he gets injured....

The way he can cut without losing speed, then somehow accelerate to an entire new level...he's truly special. I don't think we'll miss Grant at all in that regard. Mighty Mouse was my favorite Dolphin for several years but this is the right move.

I guess....Let him field punts until he breaks his leg.

The guy is a top ten pick, we need to utilize his skills anywhere we can to help us win.Last edited: Oct 6, 2021Mexphin, btfu149 and ExplosionsInDaSky like this. -

In 2011 the NFL changed kickoff rules so that the kickoff started at the 35 yard line instead of the 30. They also implemented the rule that no player other than the kicker be lined up more than 5 yards behind the restraining line, eliminating the 15-20 yard running head start. They even went further and increased the list of "defenseless" players during kickoff. The result? The number of concussions during kickoffs dropped by 40% in 2011.
That still wasn't good enough for the NFL. A study found that during the 2015-2017 seasons kickoffs represented only 6% of plays but 12% of concussions. So in 2018 they changed the rules again. This time you can't be more than 1 yard behind the restraining line, which further reduces the speed of collisions. Wedge blocks are also no longer permitted. The results are still being analyzed, but there's been talk of eliminating the kickoff altogether if these rule changes don't work. Or they push kickoffs to the 40 yard line, which reduced concussions by 68% in Ivy League football.
Anyway, point is kickoffs are by far the most dangerous play in football so the worry is real.Silverphin likes this. -
We don't draft and play just to wrap them in bubble wrap. I want my playmakers to have the ball in their hands.
I do suspect we see something of a shared approach though, especially in games where we are clearly in the lead or behind. -
Waddle is really the first player we've had since Landry who has the proper build and skill set to return punts, and he's a lot faster than Jarvis was. I think that he has a better build for it than Ginn too. I liked what he did vs the Bears in the Preseason, and hope to see more of it. That said, better to take the fair catch than risk turning the ball over or lose yardage. Better safe than sorry on PRs.
I'd rather just not return kickoffs at all, and take the touchback as much as possible. So let someone else go out and do that.
