I have had a drink tonight and this is a lighthearted but possibly somewhat truthful insight to winning the SB from me.
If we want to win a SB then Defense is the key
Bear in mind, this is before FA and trades
Defense wins Championships ?
Heard it all before ?
Hmmnnn!
I think i would spend every damn draft pick on defense if I had my way!
A good 3-4 Defensive team should have;
A great NT--We have Solai and nowt else
Good run stopping Ends--Starks is good, Merling could be dropped to LB or even tried inside.
At least one great ILB-- Ok we will leave that one for now
At least one great/good OLB--J Taylor is good but on decline--C Wake has potential--so Ok we will leave that one for now too
Two great CB's--Ok we have them for years to come hopefully, but one swallow doesn't make a summer !
FS-Ok we will leave that one for now--getting the theme now
SS- Y Bell-ok but not great
Now having said that we weren't that bad, but there were glaring holes IMO
For all you Offensive guys, just letting you know, we need help

I just read that entire thing, and still have no idea where it was going. No offense.

I still think that even in this Offense orientated season, that the defense will win you a championship.
My point was that we will never win a SB without quality players on Defense, and we have few. I know I will get ripped for this post, but it is only an opinion. Just want guys honest thoughts, thats allBig Red and azfinfanmang like this. -
Gave up over 325+ passing yards to colts, got 0 sacks, gave up almost 100 yards rushing at 5+ ypc, and gave up 48% 3rd down conversions. Yea, totally good defense.felly smarts, JimToss, Whitedolphin54 and 1 other person like this. -
If the Fins had some great D players they may have beaten both those teams, would have been in the play offs and would have been there instead. Food for thought ?
I suppose you could argue that if we had great WR's we would have beaten them too -

As I looked at the final four teams the one thing they all had in common was big receiving targets.

I still believe that Defense will win a Championship over Offense. I see your point and accept it may be true, but in truth, I am just being nice to you
I would still invest in two LB's and a Fs in the first 3 rounds of the draft. Just to make your offense look good :tongue2: -

I remember Dan Marino passing for 400 yards plus against the Raiders in 84 I think. But I also remember that the the two corners for the Raiders that day were all over our WR's [Hayes and Haynes ?} and even had an interception returned for a TD. They won 43-34 but ruined what was an almost perfect day for Dan. Just goes to show that on even a great offensive showing we lost a game because we never had a defense that could cope with their average Offense. We looked like the Colts/Saints of now, if not better. They were a good side but more evenly balanced than we were. i know things have changed, but just remember what goes around, comes around  -

I think if our defense had 11 more INT's, regardless of which position it came from, and more discipline, we would have won more games. Would you agree?Whitedolphin54 likes this. -
a big play by the defense  -

I just saw the two best offensive teams in the league play in the Superbowl. They have good, not great defenses. We want a superbowl in today's NFL we need an explosive passing game.

Most people cite our LB play as being the thing that needs the most improvement (on D) in order for us to win, and that was mainly what I was arguing against (though I think improved LB play can certainly help).jetssuck likes this. -

and risky to try the onside kick
but has anyone ever seen manning get a route jumped like that at such a crucial point in the game
i sure havent
that was a great defensive play
the pick six was the game changer
decided the outcome -
What is puzzling for me is that two passing teams have got to the SB and no one has been able to stop them. They always have been stopped in history They both have decent RB's for sure but are not juggernauts when it comes to rushing. Neither side has been able to stop the pass, apart from big plays here and there ?. Neither side are considered to be a great Defensive team ? Just great balance, or just great coaching ?

I don't care what you guys think, but the play that won the SB was a DEFENSIVE play by Porter, when he intercepted that immortal guy on Offense that calls himself Manning, just like Marino before. D will always win a SB so dont you young'uns forget it :tongue2:

Safety play is right up there with LB play. I think our struggles in the back line of the defense are more detrimental than our LB play, honestly, but some may disagree with me.Whitedolphin54 likes this. -
the game is definitely leaning toward the offense these days but it doesnt change the fact that something has to change on the defensive side of the ball
we gave up a little over 24 points a game last season
you rarely win like that in this league
we need more play makers on the dWhitedolphin54 likes this. -
You know-- I would love to have a great defense and win games 14 - 7 every week. I get the feeling from you guys you would rather win or lose 34-31 every week.
I would take greater pride in a D that gave up sweet **** all [am I allowed to say that} each week, than an Offense that racks up 40 points a week. it is so easy to score now it is a joke. Great defense wont give nothing but a ring IMO. As usual Offensive players are worth more than Densive players. Defensive players are so much better :lol:alen1 likes this. -
I don't see much reason to believe that defenses wins championships anymore. The key factors are winning the turn over battle and winning the YPA battle. If you do those two things you win about 95% of the time. This is a fact that has been confirmed over several years.
Now turnovers seem to fluctuate quite a bit from year to year and team to team. There seems to be a large amount of luck in that. But the YPA stat is something we can seek to improve. And having a YPA stat over 7.0 seems to be a near prerequisite to get into the post-season. The vast majority of playoff teams accomplish this and the ones who get by without it usually have either a ton of luck (great TO differential or the like) or some other area that is just overly dominant.
So how do you improve your odds of winning the YPA battle? To do so you need a couple of things on offense, specifically a good QB and good WRs/TEs. I think we have to believe at this point that we have the makings of the QB until it's proven otherwise. The WR/TE is where we are sorely lacking. All four of the final four teams had big receiving targets. IMO this is the area where are most lacking.
On defense you need pressure on the passing and a ball hawking FS. Our pass pressure was adequate. By many measures we were pretty decent. Top 5 in sacks, top 10 in hurries. I want to see improvement there but it wasn't our weakest area. At FS we have a problem. I think the biggest problem was a scheme issue. I really hope we bring in or at least use a true FS. Clemons might be the guy there. If he isn't then I don't know that the draft or FA offers many solutions. Assuming Berry is gone by our pick the only other ball hawking FS is Thomas. I also don't expect much to be available in FA.
So IMO if you want a SB you look at what wins, what you don't have, and what is available. Our first priority should be to get some big receiving targets. There should be some available through trade, FA or draft. If we don't address this I think we have almost no chance to be a SB contender. Next we have to use a true FS. Those should be the priorities. There's obviously more that we need, like NT and ILBs but they are not as high on the "Want a Superbowl?" requirement list.Whitedolphin54 likes this. -
Thx for your thoughts shag, perhaps I look too much into the history of things that work. Big WR's will be a need, but I still think that D will take a big part of the draft [FA and trades pending].
I still see OLB/DE as our 1st pick,and i still see a safety or NT at rnd 3 -

I believe you need a great offense and a good enough defense. It seems obvious since the 18th and 25th ranked defenses made it to the superbowl. I believe the saints defense was a little better than their ranking. Most don't consider the fact that Jabari Greer missed half the season and tracy porter missed five games. You saw what happened when Greer missed one play on Sunday....TD Garcon. In 08 we were 8-8. I figured just four less points per game given up would've given us 11 wins and a division title. This year we gave up 3.3 less points per game and we won 13.

We need a big #1 WR, a TE, and not much more on offense. On Defense we need: NT, ILB, OLB, FS. That's 4 to 2 in favor of Defense. End of discussion.
