Have to strongly disagree with you on this one. The name is extremely racist and in very poor taste, it is way overdue for them to change it.

 

It's not a matter of "if" their name is changing. It's when and to what.

 

In terms of nicknames, Redtails kind of sucks. But they definitely need to find something else.

I love many Indian themed names, but Redskins is pretty racist. I went to school in Middle New York and they had team like the Senecas and such that were well done, and evoked positive imagery.

Redskins is pretty blatantly just a derogative stereotype. The Cleveland Indians logo is another one that should be changed (though I have no issues with the name, nor that of a team like the Braves).

 

God forbid anyone's feelings get hurt. It's a team name that has been around forever!!

What's next? Tan people mad at the "Browns"? Thieves mad at the "Steelers"? Middle aged men offended by the "49ers"? Phinsational offended by the "Packers"

Normally I'm on your side when it comes to the over politically correctness of our society, but the term redskin is considered a serious ethnic slur by the native american people. It'd be like calling a team the "blackies" or the "yellowmen" or something along those lines. Also thieves wouldn't be mad at the term steelers considered it's a nod to the steel industry, but I'm sure you knew that. :up:

The name of the team is offensive, not because of political correctness but because the word was created as a racial slur. I guarantee RGIII's tune would change if the team was the Washington N-words. Not wanting a team to be named the Washington N-words, is not holding anyone hostage. If anything being beholden to meaningless traditions is more damaging than any team changing their racially offensive name.

 

None of these are analogous with a racial slur.

Its a completely fair analogy. "Redskins" was created to be a negative racial slur. Racial slurs are racial slurs. Redskins isn't an insensitive word, its an insulting word.
