Jake Long over Matt Ryan
I don't think we make a mistake like that again. They also have a formula I love, two backs that are basically WRs, almost 900 yards. Our offense needs that kind of development, with a TE.

Once in the draft in 2001 when everyone thought we'd draft him but genius Wannstedt said no let's draft Jamar Fletcher instead! And a second time in 2006 when we could've had him as a FA.
I'm very confident this team would have won at least one SB by now had we drafted Brees and probably more. Not getting the QB right has been one of the two major reasons for the sorry state of the franchise.. the other being the HC (and hopefully that's fixed now!).SICK, dolphin25, danmarino and 1 other person like this. -
I think passing on Ryan was worse. We were 1-15 the prior year and bottomed out. Why take a LT to re-boot your team, when you needed a face of the franchise. They could have drafted Ryan and still taken Chad

Some thought Matt Ryan was falling off a bit. I think prior to last year, they had something like three straight seasons without a playoff appearance?
I've always like Ryan.
We have what we have. I really like Gase and think he can get Miami over the hump. I like Tannehill, too. He's still young (QB wise) and in his prime. Let's hope next year, we have a breakout season.danmarino likes this. -
I wanted to trade down that year, but apparently we had no takers. I was happy with Jake Long. No one could have predicted his injuries. I wasn't all that high on Matt Ryan back then. Certainly didn't think that he was worth a top 10 pick, and I watched him play a lot in college. I thought that he was better than Chad Henne, but not a ton better.
I think that it shows how players can thrive or fail depending on their surroundings, teammates, coaching, injuries and luck. Ryan became a good QB fairly quickly, but it took him a long time to become great. Would he have been given those chances, surrounded by far less help as a Dolphin? Or would he have been declared not good enough, and run out of town?
The biggest mistake that Miami made was stealing Bill Parcells out of Atlanta's hands. He was set to go there, and we shoved a bigger pile of cash in front of him. It took years to rid the team of the stench of tuna after that and truly rebuild, and then it was with the mistake that was Phlibin. Here we are nine years later finally getting it right.Califin, VManis, danmarino and 1 other person like this. -
4 of Miami's 17 games this season were against these 2 teams.
Course beyond that we only played ONE other playoff team (SEA)
In those games we averaged 18 PPG and allowed 24
Useless information but outlines how much we struggled on offense vs top tier teams as well as defense. Of course we had our backup QB in for 2 of those games.danmarino likes this. -
the way to build a team is to first build it to win your division. Being that New England is who you have to get by I think you need a defense that can get pressure with four linemen and a secondary that can play man. It's why I think that even though they arent the most glaring needs another pass rushing DE or CB is something we have to consider high in the draft

I was one of the only people who wanted Matt Ryan. Dolphins fans were almost universally behind getting Jake Long with the second choice being Chris Long. Dolphins fans got the player they wanted

Matt Ryan and Chris Hogan, two guys kicking *** to get their teams to the SB. Two guys this organization passed on.
Yeah, when some of us constantly bash the organization, don't be surprised. Belichick saw what some of us fans saw and look at Hogan. Gase couldn't even figure out how good Ajayi was.

Wow, Hogan set the Pats playoff receiving record... thanks Philbin...

My analogy is why would you worry about the front door (LT) of Fort Knox when there wasn't any gold (Henne) inside and the side and back doors were unlocked.dolphin25, danmarino and adamprez2003 like this. -

Let's call a spade, a spade. This team has always been scared to pull the trigger at qb. They got lucky w Marino. Miami has a solid qb now, but they owe it to them selves to seek out the next Brady, before NE does. Clearly, a superstar qb keeps you in the mix year after year, while masking other deficiencies.

No D support, no run support, year after year and yet you felt like we had a chance in every single game simply because of who was behind C.dolphin25 likes this. -
The Patriots signed him as a free agent after the 2015 season.
As far as Gase not figuring out how good Ajayi was. Ajayi was a late round draft pick in 2015, so obviously there were 31 other teams which weren't very high on him as an NFL RB.
Ajayi was very average in 2015 and he did nothing during the preseason which led anyone to believe he was going to be the RB he turned into during the season.
He acted like a child when he wasn't named the starter after the preseason ended. So Gase left him in Miami while the team traveled to Seattle. Ajayi obviously learned from this that Gase was in charge and he needed to grow up and act like a man if he wanted to be a member of the Miami Dolphins.
To me, Gase handled Ajayi's temper tantrum exactly right. I think showing he was the boss and wasn't going to put up with this type of behavior helped Ajayi become a much better RB and team player over the course of the season.Unlucky 13, btfu149, Finster and 1 other person like this. -
Besides, its not as if the Pats knew some secret about Brady that projected him to be one of the best QBs of all time. They simply took a flier on a guy and got lucky. Saying we should be looking for that is similar to telling someone they should play the lottery if they want to get rich. There's just so much luck involved and these guys don't grow on trees. -
And that is, devise a system that nearly any QB with an average arm, above average intellect, and determination can win in, build a great defense, and sprinkle in some players that have average ability, but the same determination and intellect. Throw in some cheating and voilà... Championships.MikeHoncho likes this. -
Wrong. Myself and other fans projected him to start after the final year of Miller's contract. It was obvious he'd gain more YAC. You'd be upset and think the HC is wrong if you were Ajayi and he started Foster who gets injured every season and had low YPC for a while already.
