He wasn't perfect, but he did his best for this team. RIP

Rest in peace Mr. Huizenga.
The guy always gave the Dolphins 150%, it never panned out like he wanted but he always provided unlimited sources, no dollar was too high for success, and he loved this team.ripper1961 and danmarino like this. -
He was a much better owner than he was given credit for. He was always willing to spend the money to hire the those individuals considered the best at the time he hired them. Unfortunately it just never worked out for him as the Dolphins owner.
South Florida was able to bring Major League Baseball as well as Hockey to the area because of him.
The only issue I ever had with him is that he sold the Dolphins to Ross.
May he rest in peace.ripper1961 and pumpdogs like this. -
Ross is doing the same thing ... spending money and hiring people largely considered the best. As much contempt as fans may have for TBum, he is still highly regarded in the NFL. And Gase was considered the hottest thing around. Your contempt for Ross makes 0 sense in this context. You should be thanking your stripes it went to Ross and not some bum who slashes costs, refuses to spend money and/or moves the team (granted you may not care about the latter). Or, you know, actual criminals like the Wylfs and Haslams.Bumrush, ChrisKo, jdallen1222 and 2 others like this. -
Hiring people largely considered the best? Or hiring his friend to over see the franchise whom is largely considered terrible? Don't give me that "still highly regarded". The only job he could get was a consulting job from his buddy. Turned that into, who knows what job basically.firedan likes this. -
He seemed like he always did his best while he owned the team. Hiring Jimmy was the right move, even if it didn't pan out. Letting Jimmy make Wanny his sucessor was a bad choice. The team always was respected while he was the owner though. That's not been the case since he sold it to Ross (not always Ross' fault).

Stop the madness gentlemen. This is and should be a tribute thread to the former owner of the Dolphins, not a pissing contest.
Wayne Huizenga was incredibly diversified, creating Blockbuster Video, Waste Management, bringing baseball to Florida with the Marlins, Auto Nation...the man had an incredible talent to him. Following in the footsteps of Joe Robbie was no easy task but as a Dolphins fan, I thank you for stepping up and taking the reigns
Condolences to the entire Huizenga family and Rest In Peace.Puka-head, RevRick, Tin Indian and 5 others like this. -
I don't understand why people have this desire to romanticize Huizenga.
He didn't do anything for you, or your enjoyment. He did it for your money. Anything that you liked was inconsequential to that. If he could successfully create a business model around losing every game and telling the fans to eat ****, he'd have done it.Bumrush likes this. -

I have no comtempt for Ross as a businessman. I think he is a genius when it comes to real estate investing and I give him all the credit in the world for making the Billions of dollars he has in his career. I just don’t believe he has a clue as an NFL owner and the Dolphins will never be anything more than mediocre with him as the teams owner.
The fact he is willing to spend money is irrelevant if the majority of that money being spend by Tannebaum is on players who are average or worse. So far that has been the case under the Ross ownership and it has continued during this free agency period, IMO. -

A) because of the players he inherited from Jimmy.
B) in spite of himself, and his insistence on not having a quality QB .
He added very few good players to the team after he took over, and routinely passed on better options in the draft. Everyone saw it as it happened. One Bonehead move after another.
And I once went game by game and found that from 2000-03, there were seven times that the team took the lead into halftime, failed to score a single offensive TD in the second half, and lost the game. His ultra conservative methods were maddening .danmarino, texanphinatic and RevRick like this. -

All i can give wannstedt credit for is his defense was legit, and it was legit in college football too. But the defense stayed on the field too long they would gas out in the end of games because his offense couldnt move the chains..

Saban would have been if he either drafted rodgers or signed brees but he didn't.
The Dolphins only playoff win in the last 16 years was under wanny so case closed. -
No one has ever squandered so much talent on nothing than Wannidiot. Being happy with his double digit wins, when he should have had a dynasty, is the epitome of "not getting it" as a fan.MAFishFan, danmarino, texanphinatic and 2 others like this. -

The sad part is I never said wanny was a good coach just the most successful.Regardless of how he got there the numbers don't lie. -

What are you people comparing him to?Saban who bailed on us,cameron who jason taylor said was a complete idiot,Field goal clapping sparano, the robot philbin and the jury is still out on gase.
I don't get the hatred because these 5 other guys have 2 wildcard losses between all of them. All these coaches have sucked for us but he is the most hated.
You went so far as to say 14 years later he is the reason we still suck. This is the single dumbest statement I have heard in all my years of posting on this site. -
-
You act as though jimmy johnson won all these super bowls with this same talent and the next year we were in the basement.
The marino comment is also stupid because none of these coaches have been able to find a QB to replace marino!Maybe johnson should have found his replacement if he was such a great talent evaluator.Johnson build a great defence but he did nothing on the offensive side.
How about you name the coaches that have been better. To me they have all sucked and I will go with the one that sucked the less and actually won some games.
Nincompoop really?Come on man! -
Backing into the playoffs with a great team but losing in the first round.
Or
Missing the playoffs with a poor team but getting to 9 wins.texanphinatic likes this. -

I will take 11-5 and 1 playoff win over 9-7 and 1 playoff win especially when the 9-7 team had a hall of fame QB.
This is like a republican vs democrat debate.I don't agree with you two and you don't agree with me.Leave at that!
Lets move on to 2018.
