We should have drafted at least one WR in the draft. Our receiving corps is now closer to average than downright awful-watch Markus Wheaton light it up for the Steelers replacing Mike Wallace. They know how to draft.

 

Don't forget Keller. He could easily lead the team in receptions this year.

 

I think that we've gone from among the worst, to about average. One very good player in Wallace, a very solid #2 in hartline, and a good #3 in Gibson. Everyone else is almost competely unproven though. I really wanted to see the team pick up a guy in the third round like Stedman Bailey. With Keller though, he may essentially be our #4 WR, which is great, unless someone misses time with injury. Then we could be in trouble.

 

I think we now have have the best receiving corps in our division and have a good WR corps. Brian Hartline was 16th in the NFL in receiving yards while being the #1 WR with a supporting cast of WR's who quite frankly, were garbage. I think Hartline will be one of the best #2 WR in the NFL. You add Wallace who can attack downfield and is a playmaker who forces defenses to game plan around him.

Outside of White/Jones, Maclin/Jackson, Bryant/Austin and Thomas/Decker, I don't know if there's a tandem that I would rather have than Hartline/Wallace. When's the last time we had a legit #1 WR and a legit #2 WR?

Gibson is a bigger and faster than Bess. Keller, if healthy, is going to create a lot of scoring opportunities in the red zone and is faster and better playmaker than Fasano.

This could be our best bunch of playmakers in well over a decade.

 

I agree, and you can add Keller, Clay, Egnew and Sims to that list. Just exchanging Fasano for Keller is a significant upgrade in the receiver category...

Rishard Matthews is going to step up this year, I feel strongly about this and I think the Miami brass do as well, hence the reason we didn't touch a receiver in the draft

 

Like it alot more then last season. Only fear is if Wallace would get banged up for a couple/few games, then it goes back to looking alot like last year in my mind.

Like the guys that were drafted for the most part, but kind of wish they would have drafted a speed wr in the 3rd or 4th round. Maybe they will get a surprise in the UDFAs again.

 

The Dolphins WR bring different, complimentary skills, which hopefully leads to a high productivity from the unit. Hartline and Gibson are very good intermediate sideline receivers; leading to lots of 1st downs from the hashes. This should room for Wallace and Miller to take advantage of. Keller is very good at getting open immediately after releasing and should be turning up field with the ball to find the CB has vacated his spot to run with Wallace.

I think I recall that Philbin saying wanted a bigger WR in the slot, which provides an opportunity for someone to emerge from the Matthews, Binns, and Fuller group. Thigpen might surprise. A key aspect to watch is if any develop the trust to keep up critical 3rd downs and gain playing time in the red zone offense.

 

I think Rishard Matthews made Davone Bess expendable, in fact.

And don't forget Marcus Thigpen in the slot and as a "Danny Woodhead" type player.

 

My theory is they felt it would be better to run with the backup guys from 2012 and add Wallace and Gibson then it would be to draft rooks and hope they assimilated a very complex offensive scheme in time to do much in 2013.

Battle is for the #4 Wr slot, between Matthews and Binn, with Matthews having more physical talent but Binns having done more in the league.

Thigpen is someone they must like on some level as even the UDFA class does not feature any natural replacements for him, now it is up to him to show what he can do as a RB/Slot WR/Returner.

Personally I think he can be Leon Washington for us, a 2,000 all purpose yards player.

 

I, for one, am excited about the fact that the organization feels so good about our currently rostered younger talent at receiver that they didn't bother to add a single WR in the draft. That excites me more than drafting something new and shiny.

Matthews, and Hartline, Rishard has 4.4 speed and Hartline has shown the talent to get deep.

Keller can also get down the seam, so can Thigpen

 

Wallace/Hartline/Keller/Gibson/Sims/Matthews. I think that's a very good receiving core and a huge upgrade over what we had last year.

 

Terrell Sinkfield, WR, Northern Iowa .He is fast but we have seen fast WRs before with questionable football talent.Perhaps he would be a candidate for return duty.

I like Matthews' upside, and I'm glad he's going to get more of a chance than he would have if we'd drafted someone else, but I still would have liked to add one more WR like Bailey.

 

I think Matthews is going to turn some heads this year, and could - eventually - be the #2 WR on this team behind Wallace. He's got that potential anyways. He caught nearly everything thrown his way in limited action last year, and looked good doing it.

He's the guy a lot of people are forgetting about when thinking about our WR corp. We shouldn't sleep on this kid!

 

Good lord, somebody put this guy back on KO's. He'll, put him and Thigpen back there!

 

One other thing that keeps me confident in who we have, and that's Philbin. He knows what a quality, top-notch, deep WR-corp looks like, and I gotta believe if he didn't think we had the makings of one right now, w/ the guys we have, and who we've brought in in UDFA, you would've seen us be more aggressive in getting one early in the draft. Have to be patient and let this play out.

 

Matthews has been forgotten in all of this. I thought he showed some good things towards the end of last season. I'm not going to say he can come from outta nowhere and do what Victor Cruz did but I think he will eventually be out no.3 wideout. I agree that he made Davone Bess expendable. I like Brandon Gibson too as a surprise player for us, but Matthews is the one I am really pulling for to improve.

 

Well, to me, we will have a better idea of what is what when the padless practices happen.

Granted, many a guy w/o pads has shined then vanished, however it does give one a feel for who has the raw goods at least, and keep in mind our Top 3 slots are filled with guys who have proven themselves in the league.

Now we are down to slot #4 and #5 and part time roles.

Compared to Nannee/Hartline/Bess at this time last yr, yeah, we are way ahead of the curve.

 

As we stand i believe the WR core is good not great. I think everything hinges on brandon gibson. Ive watched a lot of this kid with the rams and think he could take the next step in becoming a better wide out. Hes going to have to step up in order to take our WR core from good to great. Hopefully he can be the guy who threatens in the red zone

 

To me, we missed out on adding more speed and/or quickness to the slot. There were a few WR I wanted that fit the bill we passed on. Even though bailey wasn't a burner, that was a huge missed oppertunity. Then swipe at the end if round 5. Concussions or not, that represented great value and was worth the risk. Drafting that kicker was foolish, IMO. I also hated the gamble of trading out of round 3 only to have to give up a bunch to get back in it. We goofed the WR position again. Nothing has changed as far as our inability to draft that position.

 

I'd rather see the slot manned by Dustin Keller, who can block linebackers in the run game, or flex out to the slot and create mismatches against them in the passing game. A traditional slot receiver (the Davone Bess/Wes Welker type) simply makes the other team bring in an additional corner and take the linebacker Keller would be a mismatch against out of the game.

I think the most effective use of base personnel is a one-back offense with Miller, Wallace and Hartline split out wide, Sims on the line in the Fasano role (assuming he's ready as a rookie), and Keller on the other side, either blocking or flexing out as I said above. Brandon Gibson can then be brought in, and Sims taken out, when the passing game is emphasized.

 

Compared to last year,we have so many WR/ TE's that can gain separation and catch the ball now it's crazy.
We are much more improved at those positions.

 

I think this is what people fail to realize when a WR wasn't drafted. Keller half the time will be our 4th WR and our slot guy. He surely won't be pass blocking. Plus if we get ANY growth from Egnew or Sims turns out to be a solid receiving option as well as a blocker...score!

 

Would steadman made our WR corp more than average in your eyes? To me he is still an unproven player. I like we're we are at.

Anyone realize Welker was let go because him and Hernandez were occupying same position. Keller will be our Hernandez/Slot. Allows us to put more size on the field to block and run while passing is an option. Effin Love it!!

I would have loved to added a Bailey or Patton. They produced a lot in big games and found the end-zone frequently. Either one would have been excellent insurance in case Gibson isn't what they hoped. A smart move that teams like the Steelers and Packers make.

 

Terrell Sinkfield is more than a track star, he can catch the ball and if he can play with a passer who can lead him rather than throwing it short in coverage he can get good separation and outrun defenders. He is not a Ginn type either who is afraid of contact. In my opinion he was a very good UDFA signing. He is a low risk, high return type of signing who offers speed you can't teach.
