This is not an add for the USMC. Last off season, Tuna said "We need a lot of guys." NO MORE.
We do need a few and the continued development of the young guys. A VG WR, a VG OLB, a guy as good or better than Ferg, and I'll take my shot with any team in the NFL.
Based on what the FO has done in the past two off seasons, it's not much to ask for. IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A DOLPHAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree MadMatt.
Sporano is THE guy. Here is hoping Parcells stays around for another year too...... -
We are just a few good plays and good coaching decisions away from 6-2. A WR, OLB, NG and a hard hitting FS away from a SB. Maybe a coaching change or 2. I'm not real happy with the offensive calls and the defensive play right now, and our special teams are just average (and maybe below) right now. With the way everything looks, we are still a couple of years from a serious contender spot. But with that being said...I like the direction we are heading, and it is a great time to be a Dolphins Fan.
-
just unrealistic.
This team has NO pass rush with who we have starting at OLB and players are not like fine wine as they age...they get older and slower.Wake has better numbers and has played 1/6 the snaps as Porter.
This team needs both Wake and Roth(if resigned) to step up other wise they need to find OLB help quickly.Porter and Taylor are both situational players at best with JT being more valuable for his much lower salary and better production.
This team has to look for a free safety...having two carbon copy players does not make sense...both have had problems with defending the pass this season and Wilson has the same amount of missed tackles as Ginn has dropped passes(7).Hopefully Clemons will be the solution.
Our safeties lead the team in tackles because the 2 inside linebackers are just not that talented.Crowder has 22 tackles in 6 games. He has been thrown at 21 times with 16 receptions for 202 yards...opposing QBs have a qb rating of 121.5 when passing towards Crowder.add 0 sacks,0 forced fumbles,0 interceptions, and 0 passes defended.
Akin has 37 tackles, and has been thrown at 13 times with 10 receptions for 161 yards...opposing QBs have a qb rating of 143.4 when passing towards Akin.again 0 sacks,0
forced fumbles,0interceptions,0 passes defended
Both Crowder and Akin have played 734 defensive snaps
with 0 sacks,0forced fumbles,0interceptions and 0 passes defended...ANYONE THINK WE NEED A PLAYMAKER AT ILB?
I honestly think we need two inside LBs as what we have are backups that are starting.
Our Corners are our future but right now are getting toasted
Davis has allowed 465 yards on 259 snaps with an average of 22 yards per reception allowed which is a HUGE number.Out of 104 corner backs rated on profootballfocus.. 22 yards per reception was the WORST out of all 104 corner backs...but he has to learn and is our future
Smith has allowed 396 yards on 418 defensive snaps
with 18.9 yards per reception allowed is another HUGE number very near the bottom with Davis...but he is our future and has to learn.
The offensive line play has not been very good this season
with Carey and Grove leading the way.Smiley,Thomas, and Long have not played to expectations. They have allowed Henne to be sacked 16 times in limited play time add the 6 sacks against Pennington and you have 22 sacks of which Green bay and Oakland have higher sack numbers.
There run blocking has been great except for the past 3 games...still need capable guard backups who can play.
Huge drop off if Long or Carey or Grove go down.
I think this team needs to get Ronnie resigned. If Brown ends up with the Patriots we will regret that for years and years.
Wide Receivers need a complete overhaul not just a #1
Camarillo is again proving he is the cream of a not very good crop.Out of 161 wide receivers in the NFL Camarillo leads with an 86.2 catch percentage with players with 20 or more receptions. He's been targeted 29 times with 25 receptions. with 0 dropped passes...
Hartline for the future all the others can take the "we ride" bus with Joey Porter and Ginn riding shot gun out of town.
I could go on but you get the point that we are more than 3 players away from dominant.I feel if we can hit on the next two drafts then we may have something to say.:up:dukane5 likes this. -
GREAT info miamiiron, but I do think you are going a bit over board in a negative way.
The stats you provide on the ILB's are concerning and cant be explained (and is why opposing TE's lick their chops). I do agree we need LB's...badly.
Some of Smith and Davis' long balls have been the fault of poor safety play.
I would be disappointed to see Bess run out of town and I do believe Ginn can be a special team threat.
Many of the sacks let up by our o-line has been situational...obvious passing downs where Henne or Pennington is trying to make a play versus throwing the ball away. 22 sacks in 8 games is not horrible. I am VERY satisfied with the o-line and what team in the NFL has enough depth at the tackle or center position not to be concerned if the starter goes down?
Brown MUST be resigned...given that, RB, o-line, QB, and d-line are soled and as maddmatt has outlines, a very good WR, LB and DL added to this team makes us have a very good chance to beat any team. No one wants to face us now....adding 3 more key players.....we can only hope!miamiron likes this. -
Porter has been hampered by an injury. He's being villainized for his lack of impact on the field, but it's due to his knee. Whether or not it's something that he can overcome at his age?....don't know.
Nonetheless I agree we need more pass rush.
The stats that you mention that the ILB are lacking? That has much to do with scheme.
But I would still like to see fewer yards up the middle.
We have a developing FS on our roster with Clemons. He is getting on the field and making some impact.
While I think Wilson is improving he's not been good enough over the course of the season thus far.
I most disagree that our WRs need a complete overhaul. You put in a legit #1 option and Camarillo, Hartline, Bess are instantly more dangerous.
Another thing seemingly overlooked by many is our offensive schemes that only put one WR on the field. Watch and take notice of how many times we line up with 2 RBs and 2 TEs. That only leaves a position for 1 WR to line up.
I do not think we are going to need a NT Soliai has been looking good.
I also believe it's important to remember that both Long and Thomas are 2nd year players, with this year being sort of a rookie year for Thomas since he was injured and rehabbing all last year. Throw in the fact that this is Grove's 1st year playing with these guys.
IMO we need a WR. Maybe a TE who can catch consistently (maybe Haynos will develop?).
Experience for Davis and Smith and Clemons.
A young OLB -
Porter has been lacking since the last few games going back to last season...not only this season...and the injury is to his hamstring not knee
Clemons has only seen 42 defensive snaps with 2 tackles and thrown at 2 times with 1 reception...Way to soon to say anything positive or negative on Clemons
If your satisfied with the play of Wilson and Bell then I need not go any further:no:
A huge if and when we get a number one wide receiver
will be who will be the odd man out because I doubt very much that we keep the log jam of #3 wide receivers that make up our wide receiver corps.
I repeat Thomas,Long, and Smiley have not played to MOST peoples expectations while Grove and Carey have.
You say 22 sacks are not that bad but again only 2 other teams in the NFL have more...then add in the QB hits and hurries PLUS HENNE JUST ISN'T GIVEN TIME TO PASS...PLEASE GO BACK AND WATCH OPPOSING QBs AND WATCH THE TIME THEY HAVE AGAINST US.
Your proving my point when you say we line up 2 rbs and 2 te sets with only 1 wide receiver...It's because we are a running team first because our widereceivers are the worst group or near the worst in the NFL.
YOU SAY MAYBE A TIGHT END WHO CAN CATCH
Our TWO tight ends have 200 yards in receptions
COMPARE TO THESE 8 PLAYER WHO HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLE BOTH OF OUR TIGHT ENDS ADDED TOGETHER
Z Miller-421 yards.....Fasano and Haynos...200 yards
Davis-477 yards........
Shockey-402 yards....
Daniels-519 yards.....
Celek-447 yards........
Gates-523 yards........
Gonzalez-429 yards...
Clark-703 yards........Dolphin duo 200 yards
There are another 15 players who have more yards receiving than Fasano and Haynos put together
including Randy McMichael with 201 yards
SO maybe we need a pass catching tight end:yes:
I guess your satisfied with the play of Crowder and Akin
734 defensive snaps with a collective big fat 0
with sacks,forced fumbles,interceptions,passes defended
I have never seen 2 inside linebackers who produce NOTHING like these two
QB ratings against Crowder are 121.5...Akin 143.4
SORRY BUT THESE ARE TWO BACK UPS AND AS LONG AS THE MAN THE STARTING INSIDE LBs SPOTS WE ARE IN TROUBLE.
We agree about the experience needed for our secondary
but they better improve because the big plays they are allowing is killing this team.
I think it is naive to think we are just 3 or so players away
We need 2 drafts and need to hit on the majority of picks
If the past is an indication of the future then we are in good hands with Bill and Jeff
My only concern is a team like the Patriots who are going into next years draft 2010
1 number 1 pick
3 number two picks(two from the Titans and Jags)
which will be high second round picks
1-4th,6th and 7th round picks
2011
2- first round picks with one being from Oakland
which should be a top 5 pick
1-2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th pick
2-7th round picks
We are on the right direction but the competition is alsoFin Fan In Cali and dukane5 like this. -
wow miamiiron...impressive!
you know your stuff...i think it is great to agree to disagree, but your knowledge about stats is impressive! Thanks!!
I still believe the o-line is one of the strongest positions on our team.miamiron likes this. -
1. I never said I was satisfied with Wilson's play so far. In fact my words were " while Wilson is improving he's not been good enough over the course of the season thus far". So I'm going to say, your sarcasm isn't really necessary.
2. Nor did I say "22 sacks are not that bad". However I would expect that Long's and Thomas' level of play will improve as they gain more experience.
As to your response concerning a pass catching TE, again I'll say the sarcasm isn't necessary.
You state that it's too early to say anything good or bad concerning Clemons. I can agree with that, however, you state "we have to look for a FS". I guess I should have clarified my own thoughts because I don't feel that it's a definite due to having Clemons.
In addition nowhere did I say I was "satisfied" with Crowder's and Ayodele's play. I would say my own statement regarding that was possibly just a little too open ended. I did say I would like to see fewer yards up the middle. But much of the stats that you mentioned? - sacks, interceptions you just don't typically see a lot of that from ILB in a 3-4. some but not alot. That is not the same thing as me saying I'm satisfied with their play.
Ultimately, as you said we can agree to disagree. I happen to think we are just 2-3 players and another year's experience for some who are already on the team, away.miamiron likes this. -
Honestly we're one stud WR away from being 6-2. That's how many games our pathetic receiving corps has lost us. We could use upgrades at other spots, especially linebacker but WR is a must.
late again likes this. -
Along with the positions we need, we really need to evaluate the job the coaching staff has done. I think there are some that need to be replaced as well.:wink2: -

For this team to take the next step we have to become a dominate team on defense.
-
Miamiron,
A very good and informative post. I still must disagree. I love stats, and Focus is one of my favorite sites. However, they seldom paint a complete picture.
Everyone knows we need a VG WR. Stats do not show the effect that player would have on the rest of our O. Henne does not have to hold the ball so long, as someone is actually getting open, and also opening up other receivers due to a double team. Fasano can stop being a TE/OT and go out on pass routes.
The OL does not have to hold their blocks as long, and can run block without 8-9 defenders in the box. R& R can take advantage of this by running through holes left by the missing defender or two.
It opens up the playbook for coaches. They don't need to go with smoke & mirrors to succeed. This is all accomplished by one player.
Gotta get back to you gus on D.miamiron, dukane5 and late again like this. -
On D, my continuation.
Our CB's stats suck but, I would bet that each and every team in the NFL would give up at least a 1st rounder for each Smith and Davis. Nate Jones has surprised, and Allen is still a VG CB with value.
Our DL has played great. Starks is at a Pro Bowel level, and Langford and Merling are not far behind. Soliai has been a VG surprise.
At S, we are getting better each week. I am not down on Wilson, watch him the rest of the season.
Which brings us to LB. Pick on Crowder if ya like but, I like him, and Sparano loves the guy. He is not a "stat man" but, does make a difference, as we saw last week. Ayodele, I would like to upgrade.
On the outside, Porter sucks and, in spite of his sacks, sucked last year too. JT has played very well, Wake has shown great flashes, and Roth was the best SSLB vs the run in the NFL last year.
That one guy gives the secondary less time to cover, and frees up other guys to do other things. The CB's should not need S help next year, which also helps a lot.
Add in that VG LB, and everyone gets better. That's just one player.
I have said we only need a few guys next season, and I firmly believe it. IMO, we are that close. -

Henning has been stale and predictable. We added the wishbone option, but the wildcat hasn't had new looks or wrinkles added to it to keep defenses guessing like a great coordinator will do. -
In SD, the wonderfully, working WC scored 6 points in 3 Q's. Hardly something that does not to be corrected. :)
IF you read the comments of DC's who have faced Henning, you will find anything but stale and predictable. It is unbelievable that you would even consider that.
I watched a couple games with former coaches from the U. They called Henning the "Mad Scientist" for all the stuff he comes up with. They said he comes up with more schemes and formations in a game, than they normally see in a year.
In all due respect, on this one you are dead wrong! -
-
Bro you still feel that Henning has done a great job this year?
