Rookie first-round pick
Brandon Weeden has been named the
Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback, coach Pat Shurmur announced after Monday's practice, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The announcement, which comes five days before Friday's preseason opener at Detroit, has been anticipated since the Browns drafted the Oklahoma State star with the 22nd overall pick. Weeden, who has been exclusively working with the starting offense in training camp, becomes the Browns' 11th opening day starting quarterback in 14 years.
Shurmur declined to name
Colt McCoy or
Seneca Wallace as Weeden's primary backup.
