To know what we may get in return for Vontae, here are the 2nd round picks from 2008-2012 who went between the 6th and 16th pick in that round.
Why between the 6th and 19th picks? Because those are the most likely parameters for the Colts, who have a .500 strength of schedule and will likely fall between 4 and 9 wins.

This chart gives you a clear idea of which positions tend to be available/great value at those spots in the draft. It shows that WR and DE are both positions that strongly fit that area of the draft (these two pie wedges are split out from the rest of the graph, with WR in green and DE in dark red). In fact, despite LB being the best position to pick in that range of the second round, WR follows a close second.
Our biggest needs are WR and another pass rushing DE. Well, those two positions account for 22% of all positions drafted in the 38-48 overall pick range, where our 'Vontae' pick will most likely fall. in short, this draft pick is very likely to let us grab a talented WR or DE.

I would trade a Vontae Davis for a Rob Gronkowski or a Koa Misi any day. The attitude he's had seemed like he believed himself "elite" no matter how he played...

Looking at that chart more, this pick also gives us a lot of flexibility with our LBs if we decide to trade Dansby at some point.
LB-WR-DE are all prime positions to fill with that pick, at that level in the draft, and get great value. -

If Ireland is picking, we'll probably get the next James Hardy, so we have that going for us, which is nice...

Aside from that - it is a Great list of players. But there is an additional value here. We also have two picks that are very likely to fall within that slot and that gives a tremendous added flexibility to move around in that area as well as get into the top 5 of the round if we want.
And, just imagine if we were able to get a player like a Pat White? What a boon that would be ...

my only hope is that Ireland isn't here to make these picks. you think trading Vontae for a 2nd was bad, wait till Ireland blows that 2nd pick on yet another sorry player, adding to his fine list of Jonathan Martin, Daniel Thomas, Misi, Pat White, Henne, and Merling.

This trade makes us a better team down the road. The staff had determined that Vontae wasnt for them, and now we'll have a talented young player on the roster when Vontaes contract would have been long expired. Another solid trade by the GM, unloading a problem for value in the draft.
