You know it's interesting. Before last season, he was a well thought of safety... a strong safety. He came over from the Raiders and before that the Super Bowl Giants. They tried to keep him, but Oakland offered more than they could afford. It was believed to be a good pickup for the Raiders. Yet, it's the Raiders. Where the black hole is more than just an endzone name... it's what players fall into and all of a sudden their careers are in jeopardy. Enter the Miami Dolphins. He was expected to pair with Yeremiah Bell and provide a hard hitting duo unlike any other in the league. Problem was, we ended up with two rookie corners having to start and the aggression that was predicted fell to the need of having to protect against the big play. It was the Saints game where we lost Will Allen for the year. And so, Gibril Wilson had to play deeper than he wanted to. He was already playing out of position and now he was pushed further out of position.

But yet, lets look at his historical stats throughout his career:

Gibril Wilson turns 29 this year. He has 592 tackles over his six year career, averaging almost 100 tackles per season. He has missed only three games in the last five years. Durable, productive, starter.

2009 - 93 tackles - 13th among DB"s in the NFL
2008 - 129 tackles - 1st among DB's in the NFL
2007 - 92 tackles - 9th among DB's in the NFL
2006 - 100 tackles - 8th among DB's in the NFL
2005 - 112 tackles - 2nd among DB's in the NFL

Based on tackles alone, he is a top 10 safety in this league over the last five years. His liability is in coverage. Which speaks to why he should not be lining up as a free safety. The guy is a strong safety. A tackling machine. Hence, my problem. We have two strong safeties. Gibril is making $900k on the cap. Yeremiah is making $2.55m on the cap. I can only keep one. I've had fair offers for Yeremiah. I've had some not so fair offers for Gibril. I feel he is worth more. Sometimes life is about taking risks. This is not one of those occassions. There is no risk in trading for Gibril IF you play him at strong safety. Step up to the plate if you dare.

 

according to PFF and it's the only source I have on that stat... he tied for 24th in the NFL in missed tackles by safeties. Ranking WORSE than him (btw he had 9 missed tackles according to them) were such notables as:

Antrelle Rolle
Michael Griffin
Laron Landry
Quintin Mikell (yours btw Gish)
Jim Leonhard
Brian Dawkins
Brandon Meriweather
Darren Sharper
Antoine Bethea
Dawan Landry

They each had more missed tackles than Gibril

 

of course, we as Dolfans remember EACH ONE of those missed tackles... each one ripped at our heart. Yet, how did the rest of the defense do?

 

Yeah, the NFL Coverage rating over at PFF really exposes those safeties that are poor in coverage. Gibril opposing QB rating was 94.7. That's bad... But, there were much worse... 30 safeties in total had worse ratings than that. Just speaks to him NOT being a free safety IMO.
