I think Ross does want that, hes spent more on FA's since hes been owner then any franchise coming in to this offseason. Hes too much of an attention whore to really get the right types of players here imo. He is just going to have to tone it down a bit. Even Snyder shuts his mouth a bit nowadays; Jerry doesnt learn though.

As for what JI will have to do to get fired? I dont know. If it hasnt happened yet, it might not

 

He'd have to stop bringing in players like Wake, Long, Dansby, Marshall, Bush, Pouncey, V Davis, S. Smith, Langford, Odrick, Soliai, and start letting the fans & media tell him what he should do.

If Philbin is a 2 or 3 years and then out guy, Ireland will go along with him and somebody will get total control. Ireland might not make it that long, either. Let's say for example it comes down to Tannehill and Coples. Ireland forces Tannehill and he washes out quickly. Meanwhile, Coples is lights out from game one. Philbin proves he wanted Coples (a la Rick Spielman when Dave Wannstedt had control) and gets the front office to fire Ireland. What I see is less Ireland as Ross's guy and more Ross misplacing his trust in Ireland. Eventually if things continue down a bad path, his eyes will be opened. Just keep Vinny Cerrato far away from the Dolphins during the critical firing and hiring time.

I'd hope if we suffer another losing season with dreadful QB play, Ireland would be shown the door for once again failing to address football's most important position. But he still has the draft. My feelings for Ireland aside, 1 month before the draft is not a good time to fire your GM. The very end of another losing season would be the ideal time.

 

According to Greg Cote in the Miami Herald this morning, the Dolphins have sold only 30,000 season tickets for the 2012 season. This is down nearly 30,000 from just a few years ago. If Ross can't see that Ireland is the major reason for this decline in attendance, he is just plain dumb. The fact is that the top players and the top coaches have no interest in coming to Miami and working for Ireland.

There is already speculation that the Dolphins will reduce capacity in the stadium next year because of the lack of ticket sales. The signing of Garrard certainly isn't going to increase ticket sales. With Ireland continuing to fail as the teams GM, it is only a matter of time before the entire top bowl of the stadium will be able to be closed off, due to a lack of interest in fans wanting to attend home Dolphin games.

 

Yea, these are really great players. That is why the Dolphins are 20-28 over the last three seasons, Right?

 

I think another losing season like this one (I intend something on the line of a start 0-5, 0-6) or NOT drafting a QB.

Let me see, they have sold only 30,000 season tickets after going 7-9 in 2009 and 2010, and 6-10 in 2011. It is likely that if they have another sub 500 season in 2012, Ross might have to pay customers to attend Dolphins games in 2013, if he wants anyone in the stadium.

I don't see any of the QB's available to the Dolphins in this years draft reviving fan interest in the Dolphins. The only two QB's which would have done this are ,RG3 and Luck and neither of these QB's will be on the board when the Dolphins select in the first round. The rest of the QB's in the 2012 draft are mediocre at best, IMO.

 

yes, I get what you are saying, but I think the "young QB" has a magic effect on the fans... maybe it'll give him (Ireland) some more time.... (on the other side, looking at the Del Rio experience, last year.... well, young qb or not young qb, he has been fired...I know he's a coach, but it could be a good parameter to misure the fans' patience)

 

The 2012 NFL season hasn't even started. We haven't drafted one player in the 2012 NFL Draft and already there are calls for Ireland's firing. Why?

Because we didn't get Peyton Manning?

Because we signed David Garrard?

Mot everyone here would say the hiring of Joe Philbin was a good hire. Granted, there are those who wanted to hire a coach with celebrity status ie. Cowher, Gruden et al, but all in all, I don't think you'll find many that would say Philbin was an awful hire.

Joe Philbin wanted Mike Sherman, former OC and head coach of the Green Bay Packers, you know when they were winning some guy named Brett Favre and he got the OC he wanted. Joe Philbin wanted Kevin Coyle as his defensive coordinator and got him. Joe Philbin got every coach he wanted on his coaching staff. I don't believe he was forced to contend with a coach he didn't want...and yet, some of you are already calling for Ireland to be fired.

We all saw with our own two eyes what a difference one year and one head coach can make. San Francisco, with essentially the same players go from the cellar of the NFC to the NFC Championship. We wanted Jim Harbaugh as our head coach because we KNEW this is what he would bring to an NFL team. Well, we missed out on the Harbaugh sweepstakes. Bad luck for us and fortune shined on San Francisco. This year, we didn't get our first choice, but we did get our second in Joe Philbin, again, a coach I don't think anyone would criticize as an awful hire...and yet, some of you are already calling for Ireland to be fired.

I doubt anyone here will argue Green Bay hasn't been good for quarterbacks. Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and now Seattle's newly aquired gem, Matt Flynn. These were products of the coaching staff we now have in Miami...and yet, some of you are already calling for Ireland to be fired.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Patience needs to be our watchword. Given their record, I'm giving Philbin and Sherman the benefit of the doubt.

Manning? As nice as if would have been there would have been issues in sigining him
Flynn? Seeing how Philbin got everything he wanted in a coaching staff, if we had REALLY wanted him, Philbin would have gotten him.
Garrard? Won't lie, I'm scratching my head a little, but prior to his injury in Jacksonville, he played WELL...just didn't have a complete supporting cast defensively.

If any of you are ready to point your finger at Ireland and lay all the blame at his feet, you best keep this in mind. You don't hire a new head coach, bring him in because he's what you want...but you're going to tell him "how" to do it. You give that coach everything HE wants, not what the fans want. Philbin is going to have the players he wants to build this team this season how HE wants it built and then our success or failure will be due to Philbin not Ireland.

Otherwise...why is Joe Philbin even here to begin with?

 

Ross is obviously very committed to Ireland. I'm amazed at the faith he puts in that guy. I think Ireland would have to pull a 'George Costanza' and drive around the parking lot dragging the Super Bowl trophy behind his car to get fired.

 

Philbin puts together his staff, as all head coaches do. Ireland doesn't decide that. He might suggest some people for the staff, but in the end that is Philbin's call and he has to make it work budget wise. Ireland will help with that, but again all the people Philbin brings on staff right now is his call.

Now players is a different story. Ireland doesn't have or need to listen to one thing Joe says. He can lobby all he wants for a player, but in the end it is Ireland's call.

 

Or showing up to work wearing Marino's super bowl jersey.

 

My guess would be that a lack of winning due to piss poor coaching is the reason season ticket sales are down.

Like it or not Ireland has done a solid job of replenishing a horrible roster. Many can put their head in the sand if they want but this team is far closer than what it was. In fact an argument could have easily been made that until 10 days ago we were a QB away from being a legitimate contender.

That is all the defending I'm going to do of Ireland.

Despite the improvements that have been made he also been a spectacular failure in addressing the QB position. He has embarrassed us as an organization and fanbase in his incredibly untactful questioning of Dez Bryant before the 2010 draft. Now there are repeated claims of him being untrustworthy and unbelievable from a players standpoint. The claims are coming, of course, from some of the biggest loudmouths associated with the game and are always seemingly looking for the big soundbyte. However where ther is smoke there normally is fire. Witness the classless way they dropped Bell yesterday a week AFTER free agency started and many of the better jobs have been filled. Bell has been a class act, a team captain and leader for years as well as a top producer on the football field. Granted he is getting up in age and may have lost a step, but they unceremoniously dump him after assuring him they were not going to do so. Here you start to see the untrustworthiness claims turning into a bit of fire. Then Ross chases Harbaugh while already having a coach in place making us look like fools. Now perhaps the case can be made that Ross didn't know any better about the breach of ettiquette but surely Ireland did. Where was he on that one? Now this offseason the pathetic chasing of Manning when he clearly was put off by something and the subsequent courtship of Flynn when they should have known going in if they were going to match the Seattle offer beforehand. Then they follow up with Smith for some reason and we end up with David Garrard?

We look pathetic and it's no wonder everyone is taking shots at us. I've been a Dolphin fan all my life and I'm not going anywhere but I don't get what is going on in Davie. I keep trying to tell myself there is some kind of plan in place, but I can't see anything but a bunch of disjointed meanderings here. Why leak all this info out about free agents just to have them walk away without contracts? We just end up looking like we're chasing every shiny thing there is and coming up short.

Ireland has to go if for no other reason than continually making us look like fools.

 

This is right. Ireland has demonstrated that he knows talent. He is apparently a decent scout and player evaluator.

But he is terrible at managing the cap, and he has awful people skills. His handling of free agency is embarrassing to say the least and he overvalues players at times, while low balling others.

He is simply not qualified to be a NFL General Manager.

 

Dave hyde had a great point, plenty of loudmouth jerks have been cut over the eyars, and yet the vast majority of them don't unload full blast on the GM that cut them. Irleand has been blasted by three guys who he dealt directly with.

Just because they're loudmouths doesn't make their opinions of the guy less valid.

You need more from your GM than just talent evaluation. Ireland's biggest problem is he doesn't know how to assemble a roster and he's atrocious at churning the bottom of the roster. Cutting Erik Walden, Ninkovich, Roth. Will Allen, only to sign him 1 week later. He also hasn't hit on many mid tier free agents. Smiley, Grove, Gerbil, Wilford.

What happened 10 days ago? Are you talking about when Marshall punched a woman in the face and was traded? Tough move, but good move and needed to be done. I don't want to root for a woman beater nor do I want to get nothing out of Marshall. Two 3rd's is better than nothing, no?

Ireland didn't embarrass me when he asked Bryant that question. It needed to be asked and I want a GM who's not afraid to ask the tough questions.

Classless way they dropped Bell? This is PRO FOOTBALL not 2nd grade gymnastics. Do you think the players think of loyalty when they are looking to "get paid"? NOPE!

Untrustworthiness? This is a big boy sport. If you can't handle the business side of it then don't agree to play a kids game for millions of dollars. I mean, I feel so sorry for Bell, nay, MILLIONAIRE Bell. Boo-friggin'-hoo!

Ross tried to get, what so far seems to be, one hell of a coach. If he had landed him and he took us to the AFCCG not one word would have been said about how Ross got him. Actually, that's wrong...Everyone would be praising him for having the balls to breach "ettiquette" and get what he wants.

Pathetic chasing of Manning? So the 9ers, Titans, Cards, and the rest are pathetic? He's arguably the greatest QB to ever play. We tried, but in the end only one team could use him. The Donkey's won.

Why on earth would you wait until a week into free agency to clear cap space? Don't you think you should clear space at the beginning so you have it to use on difference making free agents (which are pretty much all gone at this point)?
