Ok, so we're going to have the sickest running game in the NFL. Wheres our passing attack? Last thing I remembered, the best teams are the teams that can convert on 3rd down (usually passing). Heck, lets just pass all game like the patriots. I say we find us some gigantic WR's and fill in in the gaps on our crappy O line who likes to take vacations when beck is under center.

And there are at least three dominant defensive players this year: Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, and Vernon Gholston.

Gholston is most definitely worthy of the #1 pick, and he'll likely show it on national television when OSU plays LSU. He made Jake Long job two years in a row, and has been a major part of the OSU defense.

He should play the same position as he does now. He'll be an elite edge rusher. He could also play hybrid DE/OLB, but I'm not sure he'd do that immediately. KB21 is better-equipped than I to answer that.

For what it's worth, I prefer Glenn Dorsey simply because our run defense is so bad, and Dorsey has an amazing ability to rush the passer from up the center.

 

I've been rethinking that, we can do that sort of setup with say Ronnie and LBook, we have seen LBook's pass receiving ability, and he is much more flexible then McF is, we can line up LBook almost anywhere and leave Ronnie in the backfield without the "price" of McF.

Now what if we found a Olineman who can fill in at LT or RT high in the draft?

That would give us three pieces to our offensive puzzle and it would also allow us to take a DE who can pass rush.

Historically, DE at #1 are as close as you can come to a "sure thing" even surer then a QB or a RB and far more certain then a DT.

We will need Guards as well, but if a ball control keep Beck's uni dry is the plan, we need bodies on the Oline to make it happen.

 

i dont know if anyone follows the NFL here, but the league is becoming a passing league. there is no arguing that.

look at the top-5 DTs in the NFL, how many were drafted in the first round? teams don't let DTs go away, you have to draft one.

Miami = last in the NFL@rushing. To put it in perspective. Miami has given up a 2000 yard rusher with 3 games to go.

McFadden = Popular choice for people who like "names". Same people who would have picked Bush over Williams. No dominant D players? Must have missed Dorsey/Long.

It's tough. I was certainly on the draft McFadden bandwagon, and I still believe he would our offense explosive and improve the play of other guys immediately. As great as Ronnie was this year, he's not explosive--which doesn't mean I think he isn't good or want him off the team, as we saw HE IS our offense. I just think another guy like McFadden can get us that homerun. We've lacked big plays for such a long time now, I think McFadden can bring that. I think it opens things up for Ronnie and Ginn and other guys too. Our offense can't be great unless we get good QB play.

However, when you see a guy like Mario Williams dominating as a pass rusher and a run stifler, it's tough to not take a guy like that. Even look at Haloti Ngata, he was awesome last year and he's just as good this year. You're telling me a guy like that isn't worth a #1pick? I dunno. If Dorsey does that stuff, he just might be. It's so hard. There is going to be a lot of debate on this that is for sure.

This team needs a defense that can hold a lead when the healthy offense puts up 28 points.

After the team was down 42-7, or 31-13, or 27-10?

Perhaps I could agree if the offense actually was going toe-to-toe with the other team - but it sure seems like the offense only came alive after the games were out of hand.

 

Week 3 @ NYJ. We were down, the offense came back, the defense gave up late momentum to lose the game 31-28. That was the third-highest scoring game of this season; the partially-healthy offense put up 29 against the Patriots and 31 against the Browns with Ronnie still around.

 

I've noticed you've posted a couple of times with the fact that we scored 29 against the Pats. Not true, it's 28.

As for the Jets game, the offense put up 15 points after the score was 31-13 in the 4th quarter. What 3rd quarter momentum did the offense give the defense, except for zero points?

Like I said and you edited out - the offense only came alive after the games were out of hand.

I've never heard comeback efforts described quite that way. And you're also missing the broader point that it was necessary to come back in the first place, thanks to the defense.

But hey, it's all Cameron's fault. Bill Parcells would clearly have this team at 8-5, Schottenheimer at 9-4, and Cowher at 13-0.

This coach worship folks has got to stop. It rare now that teams give all personnel power to the coach and it works out. This teams needs better players. I could be McFadden, Dorsey or Chris Long. Really can't lose either way. I'd likely go Chris Long because Dorsey has had an injury plagued year and Long's increased his level of performance every year in college. He can rush the passer and stop the run from the DE position. I look at also need; the team likely loses JT next season and what else do they have at DE? Matt Roth isn't an elite player yet and even if he was, he can't be two places at once. At DT you have Rod Wright, Paul Soliai, Vonnie Holliday and whatever's left of Keith Traylor (is Kevin Vickerson still on the team?).

Now if the team got Darren McFadden, then I really wouldn't be upset either. He's the #1 offensive player in the draft and he'd produce major dividends immediately.

But like I wrote, you can't lose anyway you draft among those three players.

 

Hey, you're right. The offense was a juggernaut rolling over opponents. Who needs a defense when all we needed to do was to have the ball last.

Cameron is an offensive genius who should be given a contract extension.

Surely there can be no other explanation for the minimal offensive improvement we've had with no injuries to the offensive line this year.

 

The better way to non-sarcastically phrase it would be "with no injuries to every position on the offense except the OL."

The offense has sputtered big-time thanks to season-ending injuries of crucial players. When your #1 QB and #1 RB go down within weeks of each other and your #1 WR was traded away, you tend to have difficulties getting things done.

I have to give Jesse Chatman some credit, though; he's proven himself this year. I wanted him cut in favor of Patrick Cobbs, but Cameron made the right choice with Chatman.

 

That we can agree on. Chatman has definitely earned my respect.

 

Chris Long could be like a Mario Williams type of player not a great first year but a in the second year he could be great He has 9 or so sacks and like 22 hurrys

 

DE vs RB

McFadden is a bigger, stronger, faster version of Adrian Peterson. If you are going to make the argument of Mario Williams over Reggie Bush, make it with Peterson instead of Bush. Im not saying it is still a lock we should take a Rb with the overall pick, but given the choice of having a DE with the year that Mario Williams has had or a RB with the year that A. Peterson has had, I take the RB without hesitation. You could add 3 wins to us right now.
