new sheriff in town, we could see a lot of overhaul here...unless Gaine is promoted, which I think would be a horrible idea, par for the course for this franchise though.
Focusing on players that are under contract, I think Egnew, all 3 of our overpaid linebackers, Jamar Taylor, adding to the long list of Ireland's wasted 2nd rounders, Will Davis, and Matt Moore could be in trouble. some because of their contracts, like the LBs, others like the young unproven guys could be gone if they don't step their games up big time in the offseason/training camp.
who do you think could be gone?

TBH, Dion Sims' job is in greater jeopardy than Egnew's with a new staff. Year 3 could actually see a nice stride for Egnew after developing his blocking game this year. We could see him finally gain a nice feel for the passing game kinda like how Clay did in his year 3 this season. Besides that, much of the rest would come down to the free agency re-signings where the new GM opts to not re-up certain players. Wheeler could be in jeopardy.... but he should be in jeopardy regardless.
I don't necessarily see Jamar Taylor or Will Davis being in trouble unless they're beaten out. IMO there are bigger fish to fry than looking to replace those 2.
Misi could find himself on the trading block. Vernon costs us virtually nothing so he's not going anywhere. -
Ellerbe and Wheeler's money is all guaranteed, they ain't going anywhere.
Not keeping Taylor and Davis around would be foolish. RB will definitely be interesting, could see a lot of shakeup there with Thomas and Thigpen. And yes, a big decision in the TE rotation with Keller/Sim/Egnew/draft pick. -
Id love to trade one of those linebackers, but it's probably impossible with their contracts.
-
Not counting the spots occupied by currently slated free agents (Grimes, Starks, Soliai, Clemons, etc.) I think the guys that could be in trouble would be:
Matt Moore
Daniel Thomas
Brandon Gibson (due to injury and emergence of Rishard Matthews)
Philip Wheeler
Dimitri Patterson
Now, guys whose starting jobs may be on the line in favor of someone else who may/may not already be on the roster:
Lamar Miller
Michael Egnew (as FB)
Charles Clay (as primary TE)
Olivier Vernon
Jimmy Wilson (as Nickel CB)
Miller is a tough one as I think he's got talent but a bad mix of players on the O-line, blocking scheme, play-calling and him having down games gives me pause tabbing him as the primary ball carrier going into 2014, especially with free agent and draft options.
Egnew as FB was okay, nothing more, nothing less. I think the sooner they find out what they have in him as a TE, the better.
Charles Clay as primary TE. I think the staff view him more as a gadget player than an actual TE. He can play FB, H-Back, flex off the line and even line up out wide. I think having him as a complement to a primary TE would do a lot of good. Think Tyler Eifert to Jermaine Gresham, but with more possibilities in terms of what he can do/where he can line up.
Olivier Vernon. I know I'll catch flak for this simply because he had 11.5 sacks, but in this scheme, he shouldn't be starting. The way he was used took away from what Cameron Wake does best, and that's unfortunate. Other than when Vernon bull-rushed D.J. Fluker, how many one-on-one pass-rush attempts did he have where he was the first guy to the QB? Having him doing what he was doing is taking away from the good of the whole defense as it limits what you can do with Cameron Wake. OV certainly has a role, and a big role, but Miami needs to have Dion Jordan starting if they want to run a pressure-based 4-3 (think the Jimmy Johnson defense) or more of the 2012-esque hybrid with Jared Odrick or someone like that starting at DE. Cameron Wake is your one blue-chip player in the front 7; maximize him like you did in 2012.
Jimmy Wilson. He performed well as a nickel back, but just given the nature of the other players on the roster already in the secondary you have to figure that someone between Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, and maybe even Michael Thomas could fill that role better than Wilson.Clark Kent likes this. -
As an aside, if you're going to get rid of one of the linebackers in 2014:
Philip Wheeler - $6.4M cap hit and $10.6M in dead money costing you $4.2M against the cap.
Dannell Ellerbe - $7.4M cap hit and $11.6M in dead money costing you $4.2M against the cap.
Koa Misi - $2.3M cap hit and 2.3M in dead money, but he actually saves you $16k against the cap.
*Note, I rounded the totals. For example, Dannell Ellerbe's cost against the cap is $4.175M so I rounded it to $4.2M. Misi's cap hit and dead money are only different by that $16k in cap savings. Check out www.overthecap.com if you want to see more numbers. Overall, it's not desirable cap-wise (that's why they're keeping Aponte, right?) but it's not impossible to get rid of one the two between Ellerbe and Wheeler, or maybe even two of the three if you really think a seismic shift is nearing.
I'd still maintain that Miami needs a difference-maker at MLB if they're going to be in Coyle's scheme long-term. Otherwise, I think you need a big, run-stopping ILB if you think you're going to move to a 3-4 or more of a hybrid base. The Brandon Spikes situation in New England [diligent] watching, IMO.
I'd also be willing to trade Olivier Vernon while his stock is high. If someone comes calling and offers you a 2nd rounder or a pair of 3rd rounders, I think you SERIOUSLY consider it, especially if the new GM foresees a potential scheme change.P h i N s A N i T y and Fin-Omenal like this. -

what exactly have will davis and jamar taylor done to deserve even being in the discussion of cutting?
All 3 linebackers should be very nervous. Everyone on the offensive line should be very nervous. Miller and Thomas didn't do anything to show they deserve to be here next year either.P h i N s A N i T y likes this. -
Hopefully the big 3, Tannehill, Hartline, Wallace.

They're not cutting Wheeler until 2015 at the earliest... people need to come to terms with that. IMO Dmitri Patterson and Matt Moore will be cut.

Lamar Miller is nothing but a change of pace type back. He is not the type of RB who can be counted on to run the ball numerous times in a game and his blocking is terrible. In fact Marshawn Lynch appears to have had more, "yards after contact" in the first half of the game today than Miller had during the entire 2013 season. Keep Miller and use him the way the Saints use Sproles, but draft a running back who can be the main RB in this offense. -

If he is a good Gm he will find trades to get value for players that don't fit here.
-
Why in the world would we want to get rid of Gibson?
I say the TE position sans Clay, RB, and ALL reserve players. Thing is, we are a really young team -
If we do cut Ellerbe or Wheeler we need replacements, so not only do you have to count the cap hit, but also the cost of a new starting LB or two. If in training camp, Jenkins shows he can be as good a starter as Wheeler, perhaps then you can make one cut.

Koa Misi would be a lot easier to trade had we not given him that silly extension, no one will want Wheeler/Ellerbe (contracts), Daniel Thomas/Egnew (suck), or Taylor/Davis (unknowns). -
So what are the chances that we trade Patterson and he turns into a man of steel?

the only true tradeable assets that we have are Wake, Dion Jordan, Pouncey, and Odrick, and I don't see Miami putting any of these players on the block. -

Players I would look at
Jonathan Martin - nuff said ($345k saving)
Dimitri Patterson - played well when he played but injury prone ($5.4 million)
Matt Moore - it's good to have a quality backup but could probably find one cheaper ($4 million)
Daniel Thomas - general underachiever ($816k)
Only Tannehill, Jordan and Taylor have roster bonuses so no need rush to a decision on anybody to avoid paying bonuses.
As others have said Wheeler & Ellerbe would each create over $10 million of dead money whether cut or traded and then would need to be replaced so not a good idea cap-wise
Clabo, Incognito and Jerry are all out of contract so no need to do anything there -
Koa Misi may not be a great player but ... if you want me to pick which linebacker I would keep between him and the other 2, I'll stick with Misi.. At least he's good against the run, what do the other two do besides whiff tackles.. We're not going to have all stars in all positions, impossible. Misi is a quality player and his contract isn't atrocious. Only counts for 1.75 million in 2014 but then it starts elevating higher.

Is Carroll a free agent this year? I think hes fine as a #3 guy...but if we would have to resign him I guess I could see sticking being a challenge...
-
He is a free agent, you have to wonder what the GM's opinion of Will Davis and Jamar Taylor is though.
