I would go with Lazor, he's the only logical choice for interim if Philfin gets canned.

The only current staff member with a substantial resume and head coaching experience is Mark Duffner, the LB coach. He is well thought of around the league.

If Philbin does lose the team and it becomes obvious that Lazor's offense isn't the answer....this is a guy who might be able to hold things together, at least until 2016.

Okay, take a look at him and then pass. Not a single Belichick assistant has gone on to have any success as a head coach in the NFL. The fact is that McDaniels is doing great in New England because Belichick is the head coach and Tom Brady is the teams QB.
I think McDaniels is a very good OC for a team with a great QB like Brady. I just don't think he is a person I would want as the Dolphins next head coach. Hopefully there will be better candidates available once the Dophins finally get rid of Philbin and start their search for their next head coach.

 

How about Tony Dungy, who was also just as dry and emotionless as Philbin, but who won a Super Bowl?

 

Bleh, Dungy is awful. He had Peyton Manning and only won one superbowl because of his incompetance. He leaves TB and they win the super bowl the next year. No thank you.

 

I still think Mike Shanahan would be a good coach for us.

 

I'd say Rizzi, as Rizzi should be the other guy on the staff who knows as much about the entire roster as Philbin.

I want Sean Payton. Hoping he gets fired from the Saints. Dont want Gruden or Cowher, they will leave soon as things get tough and go back to their television jobs. I highly question their motivation when theyre getting paid well in a much less stressful position

 

I saw that list from SI the other day, and they did a good job listing a variety of candidates. I really, really hope that Mangini is not an option based off his connections to the front office.

I feel like I'm programmed to research coaching candidates every 3-4 years, so it'd be nice to get one that can actually sustain success.

Kyle Shanahan would be an interesting option to pair with Tannehill, because of his mobility and fit to Shanahan's offense. Curious who his choice at D Coord would be.

The guy who intrigues me is Teryl Austin. Limited body of work, but made the Lions defense formidable in one year, which is somewhat impressive. He'll have his work cut out this year though. He came over from Baltimore, but adapted (crazy concept) to the Lions' personnel. Finalist for the Falcons job, and supposedly had Adam Gase lined up as his Off Coordinator. Also, would have no issues utilizing Suh correctly, and others around him.

 

I'll tell you what I will bet on, that Philbin gets us nowhere near a Super Bowl or anywhere close for that matter. Either of these two would be a tremendous upgrade as far as I'm concerned. Not saying its going to happen, but I would certainly welcome it.

Not a big fan of Kyle Shanahan. I've heard of some personality issues with him that could be prohibitive.

Ray Horton I don't know about but I'd love to explore. Along with Teryl Austin. And Bill Lazor.

Some of the guys on that list I swear just get credit because they're young. Like Adam Gase or Joe Lombardi.

Not really sure what Pep Hamilton has done to deserve consideration either to be honest. He's not on the forefront of anything, very conservative. I'm not sure Kevin Sumlin is up for the job, and I'm not sure if I want him anyway.

David Shaw comes close, although his conservative offensive nature does scare me a little. His pioneering the use of VR technology in college football fits the Ross/Tannenbaum vision like a glove. I believe in the potential for that technology to make players at all positions better, to give them mental reps that actually make a difference on the football field. So I'd almost be ready to hear him out just to get an entree into that one idea.

Frank Reich is an interesting choice. My impression is he's well regarded for a reason. He's only been coaching since 2008 but a guy who slides into coaching from having played QB so long will know plenty about the game.

There's an interesting possibility with respect to John Pagano of the Chargers in that if his brother Chuck Pagano is given the boot from Indy as is now starting to be suspected, you could easily see John hire his brother to be the defensive coordinator. There's good and bad to that, the good being Chuck is a very well respected defensive coordinator for a reason and the bad being good luck ever having John fire his brother if it's not working out.

Of course, I'm in the tank for Gus Malzahn. But if you're going to go down that path you have to be careful how you set everything up around him. Offensively he's going to want Rhett Lashlee and I think you have to let him have him. From what I've heard, those two share a mind offensively with Rhett stationing himself somewhere behind the safeties so that he can better see the defensive backfield look, and they're in constant communication which affects what they communicate onto the field. Lashlee I believe has turned down head coaching opportunities to continue on with Malzahn. The reason I mention all this is because when Wayne brought on Nick Saban, Saban wanted to hire his own guys at defensive coordinator (Will Muschamp) and possibly at offensive coordinator (rumored Jimbo Fisher)...and duo of Wayne and the President at the time (forget his name, Dan Bailey or something like that) refused him. They said he needed to hire coordinators with NFL experience. That set things off on the wrong foot with Saban and I don't think we can make the same mistake with Malzahn.

 

I think you've got to take issues coming out of Washington with a grain of salt.

I am very suspicious that the "Redskins sources" are Daniel Snyder and his people, and that the leaks are part of the dysfunction that's been going on there for a long time and has continued under Gruden.

Well since Chucky built a team in Oakland got traded to the bucs turns them around and beats his old team in the Superbowl. I would think yes he has and can build more than one Superbowl team...

 

He turned the Bucs around? He took a team handed to him and won and the team went downhill the longer he was there.

The issues I heard about came before there was any kind of schism between the owner and Shanahan, I believe.

 

I would like to give Sean Payton a look. With the weapons and hopefully a better line next season I bet he could open up things on the offense real well. And get a good defensive coordinator.

 

Our new coach should be someone who can adapt to his players and not be a guy with a scheme.

I want a coach that it doesn't matter what offense type we use or what defense type we use.

**** schemes. **** west coast offense. **** 4-3 or 3-4. I want a guy that can look at our players strengths and play to that.

These guys are rare. Very rare. Shula was the ultimate. Belichick is like that except he's a cheating dirt bag so I'm not sure its fair to count him. Pete Carroll is like that.

There is one other guy like that, and its Gus Malzhan.

We could sign Case Keenum to back up Tannehill....I know he didn't coach Tannehill, but still...I think Sumlin could coach in the NFL.

 

I prefer a head coach who has experience in the NFL as a OC, DC, or a former head coach.
I see no one at the college level who I think would be a good NFL head coach. Malzahn was a hot name a few years ago, but defensive teams in college have figured out his offensive schemes and he will be lucky to keep his job at Auburn if the Tigers don't turn it around pretty soon.
Auburn was selected before the season to be a favorite to win the SEC and right now they will be fortunate to not finish last in the SEC West.
If college defensive coordinators can figure ways to shut down Malzahns offense. NFL defensive coordinators would have no problem coming up with schemes to make his offense impotent at that level.

The stuff I had heard about Kyle Shanahan dated back to his unseemly spat with Donovan McNabb going way back before there was a hint of trouble between the Shanahans and the Redskins organization or owner. As for the stuff that came out after the split, let's keep in mind the primary conduit through which that all came was Jason La Canfora, whom Dan Snyder hates like poison. Snyder used to have entire meetings dedicated to what they were going to do about JLC. I am not sure that they would use JLC as a mouthpiece for their point of view on Kyle Shanahan. It's possible, but doesn't seem likely, and it also seems unlikely JLC would participate in that as I'm positive there are hard feelings on both sides there.

There has also been a controversy surrounding his hiring practices in Washington. In Washington, Kyle Shanahan hired Matt LeFleur as QB Coach and Mike McDaniel as WR Coach. McDaniel and LaFleur came with Shanahan from Houston where they were quality control coaches. They were under-qualified for the positions they held and when Shanahan left Washington he asked that they be hired by the Browns under him. The Browns relented on McDaniel but they wanted Dowell Loggains for the QB Coach job as he was more qualified. LaFleur left for Notre Dame as QB Coach. I guess since Shanahan couldn't get Matt LaFleur he decided he'd hire his little brother Mike LaFleur to be a coaching intern.

All of these guys are Kyle's age (early to mid 30's), and all of them are relatively inexperienced relative to their hired positions, and this has led to constant accusations that Kyle essentially hires his friends. Indeed when Kyle Shanahan brought in a 32-point presentation to Head Coach Mike Pettine on why he should be let out of his Cleveland contract, that day the Browns informed Mike McDaniel he was not to be allowed in the building until they decide his fate. They let he and Mike LaFleur go, and now all three of the brat pack have been re-united in Atlanta with Kyle. Mike LaFleur and Mike McDaniel are "offensive assistants" while Matt LaFleur is QB Coach.

My argument here would admittedly lay out on a "where there's smoke, there's fire" basis. But that's usually the very best any of us can do when it comes to assistant coaches. You have a guy that:

1. Hires under-qualified people for important positions that are suspiciously his own (very young) age and all act like hangout buddies
2. Was accused of childish behavior in Washington with respect to McNabb even before any hint of schism between Snyder and the Shanahans
3. Was accused of very childish behavior post-schism by a media member who is considered an arch enemy of Shanahan's enemies
4. Hired on with the Browns knowing full well what kind of volatile situation there was (owner fired Chud after one year, weirdness with GM situation, etc)
5. Decided one short year later he was going to ambush his coach with a 32-point "Why I Quit" presentation

I'm positive he has things going for him. But all of that paints a grizzly picture for a 35 year old that is himself arguably under-experienced to hold the big whistle.

 

Exactly right. Being handed a talented team and winning a championship with it is two different things.

 

I am not sure who the new coach should be, but everyone from the coaching staff to the gm should be gone. Start from scratch. No usual suspects like gruden etc. We need fresh blood, maybe an up and coming college coach? New owner would be nice to.

 

Well they were 10-6 and 9-7 with Black Philbin in charge Chucky shows up and they go 12-4 and win the superbowl. If that isn't turning a team around I don't know what is? They were entering cap hell in the years after that. This team has talent. It just isn't being utilized.

 

Need a hard *** coach. Someone that will make this team physical, instill discipline and demand respect.
