This team is obviously being gutted and re-faahioned in tannenbaum's image. I have made it known I am not a fan of his. We will see who is right in a few years
That being said though, why even keep philbin if we are making so many changes anyway? Philbin is not a good HC. Why not let MT make the HC selection ??

I would have fired Cautious Coach Joe at the end of the yr and not looked back.
Let me get this straight, ol Joe cannot coach Marshall or Wallace, and we dumped Hartline b/c ol Joe, and of course we have two consecutive yrs of December collapses
Uhm..why does that fella have a job in Miami again? What exactly is he bringing to the table..not to much at allDolphinzdawgg, Rick 1966, cbrad and 2 others like this. -
Looked at from a different pov, we lost Hartline, we lost Wallace, we probably are going to lose Clay.
And replaced them with Cameron and Still, one has concussion issues the other is wildly unproven, and this is seen as upgrading?

Ross thought about it but thinking about canning Joe made him queasy.

The biggest indictment of Philbin is not only that the players so clearly do not play for him and he does not motivate them adequately enough, but 3 years into his tenure here can we all agree on one thing he does well or does that impacts the team in a positive way? No
Certain coaches can out game plan you, others can motivate their players, others can get the most out of their players, and some can take character concerns and right them. Philbin on the other hand doesn't look like he game plans at all, he isn't motivating anything, gets the least out of his players, and cuts anyone who might potentially disagree with him.
It was absolutely idiotic at the time for him to return and it still is idiotic. Like it or not its gonna end up sending this franchise back a year once this year is over and he inevitably does something that gets him fired, we are gonna have to wait yet another year for the new head coach to put his system and style in next year. Its an idiotic move for an idiotic owner. Not firing him and not hiring Rex Ryan was not smart at all.Da 'Fins, Dolphinzdawgg, gunn34 and 2 others like this. -

Its not only that they can't develop talent its that they don't use their players in the positions that benefit them the most. For example its unthinkable with how bad our lb.'s have been the last 2 years and with Dion Jordans athleticism that they couldn't have used him more in the last two years. We are just such a poorly run organization.Da 'Fins and Dolphinzdawgg like this. -
No team develops ALL or MOST of the players brought in. On the flipside, many teams, ESPECIALLY us for a decade, barely developed talent at all.
Also, I'm not saying the staff should be kept for it, I'm just saying lets at least have an honest assessment and that includes that this staff has done a damn fine job developing the talent on this roster. -
What are your expectations? That no player can bust out lest our coaching staff be called failures at developing talent.
BTW, Taylor will be starting at #2 CB this year.
R. Tannehill, J. James, J. Landry, R. Jones, J. Jenkins, L. Miller, C. Clay, V. Olivier, J. Odrick, K. Misi, etc. all would like to have a word as well.
I bet by the end of the season R. Matthews, D. Jordan, J. Taylor, C. McCain will also like to have words too.Piston Honda, Larry Little and Sceeto like this. -

What is the effect of the head coach on winning and losing in the NFL, and how is that measured and determined for any one head coach in the league? I suspect this thread will span hundreds of replies, with plenty of bantering back and forth, and that very basic and essential information will remain unknown, making the entire discussion completely uninformed in the most necessary way.

It doesn't matter why, Philbin is here for at least another year. Lets hope we finally do something other than go 8-8.

It is rather difficult to say these players have had a big jump in development under Philbin and this coaching staff when you consider that the Dolphins were 7-9 in Philbin's first year as the teams head coach and has been 8-8 the past two years.
While all the players you mentioned have a certain degree of talent. I think the point of this thread is that the team and these players may have had more success over the past three years if they had a better HC than Philbin.
Even with the addition of Suh, I see this team finishing out of the playoffs in 2015. So I expect Philbin to be removed as the HC after next season and I just hope Ross and Tannebaum can finally bring in a top tier head coaching candidate for the 2016 season.
I have never felt Philbin is a quality NFL head coach and even though some players may have developed under this coaching staff. I think under a better coaching staff, these same players and perhaps some of the other players on the roster would have developed even more.
It is all about wins and losses in the NFL and after three years as the Dolphins head coach, Philbin has a losing record and that just isn't good enough. I think Ross made a huge mistake retaining Philbin for the coming season. All it will end up doing is prolonging the implementation of the system the new HC in 2016 is sure to install. -
He is cheap.

They play guys constantly out of position and technique(linebacker, offensive line especially), fail to start the best player, and bury guys for inexplicable reasons. It's a wonder there has been any development of young players. -

Then you look at his bottom line. He took over a team that was consistently around .500 with Sparano. And even with a much better QB the team is still consistently finishing around .500. -
Maybe there just weren't any other options deemed worthy out there. Rex Ryan may be better, but he hasn't developed an offense which makes it almost pointless. Although he would've inherited Tannehill which would be the best QB he's had, though Tannehill is still an unknown. And if I think about it, Rex could probably do a better job in December than Miami's last two choke jobs. And would probably improve the secondary. Whatever, its done. I don't think I'd want Rex or Philbin as the coach of a team, but I guess i'll wait and see since Philbin is here anyway for '15.

Its just too late for any drastic coaching changes. The time has passed. Either this team makes some noise, gets to the playoffs or he is a goner. I am ok with that. He has the talent to win 10+ games, if he doesn't then we start over.
-
edit: This also includes Clay's salary this season. So we may have about $7mil more if he leaves. -
The defense's Ryan is known for were built by Eric Mangini.
I would much rather have Philbin over Ryan. Watch what happens in Buffalo. We all know they already have a heck of a defense. Ryan has made some moves on the offensive side of the ball.
For the first couple years Buffalo is going to give us all we can handle. Once Ryan starts tweaking their D they will slowly decline. Mirror image to the Jets
The collapse if there is one they will blame on Joe Philbin
Joe Philbin = Patsy
edit : What Ryan was given
league rank for Buffalo Bills
4th in pts allowed
4th in yds allowed
3rd in pass
11th in rush -
He only has more wins because he has been a head coach longer. Over the last three years Philbin has more wins than Rex. And those play-off appearances, they only came when a guy name Mike Tannebaum was buying the groceries for Rex. I wonder what that guy is doing these days? -
CAUTIOUS JOE makes conservative Dave look like a Liberial head coach . I almost had to be committed when Miami started letting teams come back on them and this has to stop and we have to play to win instead of playing not to lose.

Such a terrible move to change this much with an NFL roster but not hire a new coach. It's like saying, damn I hate this car. It's just not performing the way it should. Let me buy new tires, new paint, gut the inside, leather seats, add some fancy accessories, new transmission, new brakes, etc...but let's go ahead and keep the engine in there. Because no way could that have been part of the problem...LBsFinest likes this. -
All of this matters not. He is our coach for the upcoming season and nothing we can say or do will change that.
We will sink or swim with him next season and either we will make the playoffs or start another coaching search. -
Didn't know this was going to be a hate thread.
Joe and Coyle will be here for at least one more season. Yeah, the truth hurts...
Let's just suck it up for now and hope they do well. There jobs here are counting on these big FA moves. :wink2: -
Honestly, I think the simplest answer is usually correct and that would be continuity but the larger portion would be to keep Lazor.
The way we went about getting Hickey and his contract seemed like he would fill a gap so to speak. If we don't make the playoffs this year I see Hickey and Philbin being fired at which point it will be interesting to see if the front office and new GM think Lazor has done enough to become our head coach. -
