Fairly simple question. If O.J. Atogwe becomes available next month do you think that Miami Pursue him? I'm just trying to get a general feel for what my other fin fan's think.
Will Miami Pursue O.J. Atogwe?

Yes without a doubt.

No, they are very happy with the young guys.

Why not?

I think so. Part of me hopes so. I'm not so comfortable with our Safety position... FS or SS. Bell is alright, but I think we can do better. If not, I'm ok with him.
-
-
i have been waiting for him to get dropped so we can get him then trade culver to the rams for like a 7th or something then we will have the safty we need giving jones and clemons time to show what they have
-
Yes they will. I do not think the Rams want to spend ANY money this year. Outside of their drat picks, they ain't spending anything on anyone. As a matter of fact, they are dumping salaries. If you look at the players they picked up, outside the draft and the players they chose to retain, for the most part, it looks like a good Practice Squad. OJ does not want to be a Ram anymore, plain and simple and the Rams do not want to pay him the aprox 7 mil ( 110 % of 2009 salary )
I do not think Atogwe is really worth 7 million a year but he is worth a decent contract for 4-5 years and is a good player, if healthy, which he probably is. He has had time to heal up. This is another one that will have to pass a physical and I imagine , due to the money he will be looking for, they will make him pass a brief workout session. Once burned, or zinged ( Marshall) they are not going to get burned or zinged again, do not blame them.CrunchTime and padre31 like this. -

I voted based on what I want.

makes sense to me
-
Probably not, but hope to hell they will. I still say let Jason Allen compete for the position...

No. Hasnt Played in Our 3-4 Defensive Scheme. Another Safety Risk. OJ has played in a 4-3 his whole career. Im Tired of taking Risks at Safety. Play it Safe with Jones or Clemons.
-
My guess is "No", although I think they should. I think they have an internal budget that assigns $ values to each position. I don't think they have a high $ value on the FS position. I think that SF or Dallas will bid the price up above our budgeted number before we even bid.

my only worry would be the hernia surgery. other than that, Madden agrees.

Hmmm...I need option C. I'll say yes if they happen to dump a little bit more salary (Jake Grove perhaps?
Otherwise I vote no. -
They pursued Rolle and Clark for a reason and I don't fully believe the coach speak. They may be really happy with Clemons/Culver/Jones, but doesn't mean they're option A for starter this season. We've heard the coach and front office say good things and then the next week that player is gone. With the Dansby and Marshall signings it shows they don't mind signing the right player for the right cost and that this isn't a rebuilding year. It's year three for everyone and while I personally don't think they're on any kind of hot seat, if this season is another playoff miss the whispers get louder.

I voted yes, because I want them to pursue Atogwe. I don't feel confident that they will though.
-
I voted "yes without a doubt" but I do have doubts...there should have an "i hope so" option

I don't think they'll pursue Atogwe, but I also don't think they are real happy with the young guys and a journeyman like Culver. I just don't think that Atogwe is what they are looking for....coming off a pretty bad injury...I don't know...
-
Ya, I should have put in a couple other options. -
I put in a no vote, but re reading the queistion i believe they
'll lok at him if he becomes available but i do not expect it to happen -
we have an unresolved problem @ FreeSafety.
O.J. Atogwe
would be the immediate fix we need @ 4 2010. -
-
I'm going to go all Bill Clinton and say it depends on what your definition of pursue is. I'm sure they inquire, but I have a feeling his asking price will be too steep, and someone will bite on it. There were a lot of teams looking to upgrade FS this year if I recall.
I think they see their guys as serviceable, and want to see who wins camp and if they can stand out in a game. I mean obviously if the price is right, you get a vet unless one of the other prospects is ready to hit the field as a future star. But I really don't think we have anyone like that on the roster right now.
But I think, and I imagine the coaches feel the same way, that even if we don't get Atogwe one of them will be good enough to start. -
but seriously, i think we should. do i think we will? i dont know. I know we persued ryan clark and rolle big time. Was it dead serious? maybe. was it a cover-up to make teams think we were going after earl thomas?
who knows with these guys. i like atogwe and think hes a very good safety. CK posted his average numbers recently and they were stellar (and better than ed reed) him next to bell, with will allen, s smith and vontae is a nasty D-backfield with dansby, edds, dobbins and a pass rush of wake, misi etc i like our chances :yes:siciliansith likes this. -
They arent happy with the guys on the roster. If they are, why did they offer BOTH Rolle and Clark contracts?
Now Im not sure on OJ..... it might come down to money and injury concerns. But I dont believe they are happy with the guys we have on the roster right now. Their actions show they arent. -

They're fools if they don't at least evaluate all available options as this is still our biggest hole.

Personally, I'd argue OLB as our biggest unknown, but it could be a problem. I'm sure they explore Atogwe. Whether or not we get him is another story... As many have suggested, I see a conversation that goes like...
Agent: OJ wants $7.5M. How much will you offer ??
Bill: Hmm...$6M and that's my final offer...You're guy isn't any better than Rolle, and that's what we offered him....
Agent: But Bill, Rolle isn't available right now, OJ is ??
Bill: Nope, but I'll throw in Heat tix next season ??
Agent: Look Bill, he completes a big hole in your D, you need him. Just make me an offer somewhere closer to my figure. (cell phone rings)...Hello ?? Yes...ok...Well that's a fine offer, I'll get back to you in 1 minute JJ. (hangs up).... Bill....here we go, I just got an offer from your old pal Jerruh. It's a bit north of your offer...if you match it, you got your hole filled on D....
Bill: $6M and the Heat tix...that's it...
Agent: Ok, sorry Bill, I'm on my way to Dallas...which road to I take to the airport ??
Bill: Call a cab ! -
if Miami intends to contend in 2010, they will go after him

Gotta agree though...adding Atogwe would really solidify the secondary, and better yet, for more than a year or two. Then all we have to work out is the OLB position and we're ready to step up to the plate...
-
I have this picture of even bigger struggles and bigger plays given up in the defensive secondary. I hope I am wrong, but without a veteran presence I think so. Bell is a presence, just not the one needed.
-
-
They should pursue him, but I don't know if they will or not.
-
Probably isnt going to happen guys.....

Atogwe to Dolphins is officially a long shot. With respect to Atogwe, team source says "we like what we've seen from our safeties so far." -
-
I doubt we sign Atogwe, but I am willing to bet it isn't because "we like what we see of our current guys during OTAs." I think it has to do with the dollar signs. -
