I am working on a mock draft and would like a little feedback from my fellow finsfans regarding the picks I have slotted for our team. I am assuming that we are unable to trade down and pick up a 2nd rounder. We do have 7 total picks including two back-to-back 7th rounders according to walterfootball.com draft order.
1. Mike Pouncey G/C, Florida 6'5" 320lbs 5.23(40)
3. John Moffitt G/C, Wisconsin 6'5" 320lbs 5.13(40)
4. DeAndre Brown WR, Southern Miss. 6'6" 228lbs 4.48(40)
5. Brandon Saine RB, Ohio State 6'1" 217lbs 4.40(40)
6. Anthony Allen RB, Georgia Tech 6'0" 231lbs 4.63(40)
7(a). Niles Paul WR/KR/PR, Nebraska 6'1" 215lbs 4.42(40)
7(b). Richard Sherman CB/KR, Stanford 6'3" 190lbs 4.56(40)
I know there is no QB or big name RB like most people seem to want, but I think these picks would really truly benefit our team. The two OL at the beginning will help our running game and hopefully give Henne more time in the pocket. This is assuming we move Incognito to C, Carey holds down the RT position.
DeAndre Brown is a tall solid WR who I think could be a steal in the 4th. This receiver is a year removed from a broken leg and was putting up freakish numbers before the injury and put up some impressive numbers after the injury. Niles Paul is a speedy receiver with PR and KR skills that could be valuable to our ST.
Brandon Saine and Anthony Allen are two backs that impress me. Saine is a good receiving RB as well which will be helpful on 3rd down. Allen is a big power back who I think plays much faster than his 40 time would suggest. He played in GT's option offense but was very productive when he got the ball.
Richard Sherman would simply provide a little depth at the CB position and give Sean Smith a little competition. He is also a converted WR much like Smith, but he returned punts at Stanford and was pretty good at it too. If nothing else, he may help our ST and develop into serviceable secondary depth for our D.

Eh, it's not bad. I think Miami needs to address the QB position at some point during the Draft. I wouldn't mind drafting Pouncey, but taking him at #15 would be way too high for an OG. If Miami can trade down a few spots, and Pouncey is still available then I'm good with it.

No, sorry, I'm not fine with ignoring the QB position again. Chad Henne isn't magically going to become an NFL QB overnight, and the guy to coach one of the two offenses that was worse than ours last year will not be his savior.

No, I would be most unhappy with that draft.
We need RB badly and we have to address QB eventually.
If we choose not to go for QB this draft because the talent isn't there, we damn well better take a first-tier RB. -
I like it, as there are no QBs in this draft worth reaching for and drafting a RB in the first round will have nearly the same chance for success as one a bit later. A star QB would have to wait for a trade (not likely) or next year's draft possibly... patience is needed while we bolster the OL.
I don't see the team using EVERY pick on the offense, though (outside of a backup/PS CB). Nolan might quit if they do! -

For those of you who say you are unhappy because I didn't select a QB, I would tell you to relax because I think the FO will go after a veteran QB and that's why I didn't draft one. TBH, I don't like any of the QBs in this draft except for maybe Gabbart and we are not going to move up to get him. Newton will be gone by the time we pick and Mallet and Locker are not worth wasting the pick on just for the sake of drafting a QB.
RB is not worth picking at number 15 if you have the opportunity to solidify your OL. Any RB could be productive behind a solid OL. Hell look at R&R express for that matter, last year they did well when our OL was healthy and this year they sucked when our OL was plagued with injuries. Not even a stud RB can succeed if he is getting hit behind the LOS every time he touches the ball. Let get rid of the pipe dream here and now, we are not getting Mankins or Nicks because I don't see those players hitting FA and behind those two there is really not very much that I know of. -
Would like to see a Qb added as well, Joe Devlin or Rick Stanzi in the 5th rd or so, keep in mind though, no Rook Mini Camp, no OTA's, nothing this yr draft a Qb and they will have shortened Training Camp to learn their job.

Can't say I'm really in love with your picks but thanks for the effort. Here's the question I pose, if Duboll is going to install an offense similar to the Patriots, then wouldn't we need to focus on fixing core positions? I cannot see using high picks on flashy RBs and WRs. Correct me if I'm wrong but it sure seems like New England takes in a ton of cast off RBs and WRs and has success in rotating them by committee, not drafting a stud RB to feature. We just need solid role players with some versatility. JMO.

No not at all. We don't need to draft every high pick we have in the offensive line. We need to draft speed and playmaking ability for once, not to mention QB.

See, I agree with that, but also think we can poach some CFLers to fill some of that need, that would open up opportunities to use the Draft on positions such as Te that need bolstering without relying on late rd picks to maybe come in a play early in the season.
I also think Devilin will be a fine NFL Qb. -
The change that I would like to see is putting a tight end like DJ Williams or Lance Kendricks at that 3rd round spot, and hopefully we could go out and sign someone like David Baas to compete at the Guard and Center position. I just think that drafting two guards with our top two picks makes us too young at the guard position especially since I think Jerry is going to become pretty good.

1 OT Carimi
3 QB Devlin
4 Good TE prospect
5 QB Yates
6 Good Center project
I'd like it even better if we could trade down into the mid 20's and pick up a 2nd & still maybe grab Carimi or another good OL like Pouncy perhaps ... then in the 2nd round grab one of those 2nd tier speed HB or WR. Yep I'd double up on the QBs ... we have got to find a long term answer and I don't think signing any of the available free agents will fit what we need -
That's smiply untrue. IMO, this is a pretty solid QB draft. You don't have that elite guy with Andrew Luck out, but there are a handful of guys with big time upside. They do come with some risk, but most QBs do.

As for the draft, I would not be a big fan of it. You're ignoring two of the Dolphins 3 greatest needs. And if indeed Incognito is moved to center you only need one OG because this regime can't completely give up on Jerry yet. I'd also like to see a ILB and/or an OLB in there somewhere.

Didn't we as fans also claim Matt Ryan wasn't worth the #1 overall pick? Dolphins fans tend to say this about every draft. And we've seen an awful lot of those supposed lousy QBs to go onto pretty damn good success in the NFL.
You might be right. I'll leave that up to the guys who evaluate talent to decide. But RB will not have the impact we need out of our first round pick. Just ask the Bills how that worked out for them.sports24/7 likes this. -

love the first two picks. then we would have to hope that henne progresses but with a strong oline and hopefully a running game I think we would have a good chance to be back in the playoffs with that kind of draft

I would love to hitch my wagon to Blaine Gabbert even if it meant moving up to get him. Personally I would also be in favor of Newton and probably even Mallett. These guys all have question marks, but so do just just about every QB prospect. At some point though you have to take a chance on a top flight QB prospect. A guy that has the potential to be a franchise QB even if there's a chance he busts out. There are 4 guys right now that most likely will go in the 1st round of a pretty decent draft. That's a pretty solid QB class.

We aren't getting any of those guys at 15 and don't have the ammo to move up. I want nothing to do with Cam Newton unless we're moving him to RB or something.KB21 likes this.

It's so early we really don't know who will be there at 15. Gabbert most likely won't, but Newton and/or Mallett very well could be there. We do have the ammo to move up though. Just look at what it took the Jets to move up for Sanchez when they had a similar pick. And regardless of how much you like Newton that doesn't really change the fact that the statement "there are no good QBs in this draft" isn't true because many people like Cam Newton's potential along with 3 other QBs that could very well be picked in the 1st round.

I honestly just don't see how any of these QBs in this year's draft class is going to fix our problems. On top of that, we are going to be limited to 1, maybe 2 of the top QBs with our 15th pick, unless we move up. I think it is way too much of a risk and I am still a huge believer in Henne with healthy playmakers around him and a decent playcaller.
I still like Ingram here. I would rather have Julio Jones, but wouldn't be disappointed at all with an Ingram pick. He makes plays and is more "explosive" than some people think.
Also, where is Ponder projected? I'm assuming anywhere from mid 3rd-5th...I wouldn't mind taking him with a later pick as long as we get playmakers before him. I don't want to draft offensive linemen then Ponder. Give me some guys that can make this offense exciting. I think Ponder could be a solid later round pick and could come in and compete with Thigpen for a backup job. -
Listen I understand everybody's concern regarding a QB, I would be the first person to say we need a solid QB to lead us to the promise land. However, I just don't think it would be a smart move to waste a 1st round pick on either Mallet, Locker or Newton for that matter. I don't see either of those QBs being legitimate NFL QBs.
With that said, I still believe the dolphins will bring someone in from FA to compete with Henne. I would much rather them go after Kellen Moore, the QB from Boise State, next year. As one of the posters said, we have been complaining every year that we don't think a certain player is a good enough QB (aka Ryan) and I agree with that comment, but it shouldn't the basis of a decision for a new draft. I live by a rule which is don't let previous decisions force you into a potentially bad decision in the present.
I have noticed one thing about the Jets that I wish we had for Henne today. They have a SOLID OL which opens holes for the running game and gives Sanchez plenty of time to scan the field. That is what I want to build in Miami. Whether we have Henne or any other QB taking the snaps I want us to have the best OL in the league. Give your QB time and eventually he will find a wide open receiver no matter how good the defense is. -

It's true to me. It's called an opinion. And my opinion is that none of the mentioned QBs with the possible exception of Gabbert is worth a 1st round pick and hitching the future of the franchise to.

You're entitled to you opinion and that may be the way you see things, but it flies in the face of what most experts think. The statement was "there are no good QBs in this draft." If you think that some of the question marks these QBs have are prohibitive from drafting them, then you probably will never be all that thrilled with a QB class because most classes don't have 4 1st round caliber guys and almost always after the 1st QB projected to go (and sometimes even him as well), the rest all have question marks. You can go back to the draft years of guys like Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Big Ben, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Josh Freeman, etc. All these guys had question marks. But at some point IMO you have to take a shot on one of these guys. The last time the Dolphins took a shot on a QB with question marks in the 1st round they landed Dan Marino. But very rarely can you land a talent like that if you don't take a chance first.

The last paragraph in your statement is spot on. Let's look at the young quarterbacks that have come into the league over the past three years. The ones that are having success, or the ones who aren't being blasted by their fanbase at this point are the quarterbacks who went to teams that have strong running games and strong defenses. Matt Ryan in Atlanta - strong ground game and defense. Joe Flacco in Baltimore - strong running game and defense. Mark Sanchez in New York - strong running game and defense. Josh Freeman in Tampa Bay - strong ground game and defense. In fact, let's look at Josh Freeman closely.
In Josh Freeman's rookie season, he threw 10 touchdowns to 18 interceptions, averaged 6.4 yards per attempt, and completed 54.5% of his passes on the year. In 2010, his second season, Josh Freeman threw 25 touchdown passes to 6 interceptions, averaged 7.3 yards per attempt, and completed 61.4% of his passes.
What was the difference other than experience?
Tampa Bay in 2009 - 23rd rated rushing attack in the NFL; 27th rated scoring defense in the NFL
Tampa Bay in 2010 - 8th rated rushing attack in the NFL; 9th rated scoring defense in the NFL
Give Chad Henne a good rushing offense and a strong defense, and people would be talking about him the way they are talking about Mark Sanchez right now.
Looking at the numbers, I'm more convinced now than I ever was that the Dolphins should focus on improving the running game and getting that defense over the hump rather than simply throwing the baby out with the bath water by giving up on Chad Henne. Would I draft or bring in competition for Henne? Yes. Do I think the Dolphins should reach for a quarterback in the first round? Hell no, because it won't matter who they get, if they don't run the ball better and grow some teeth defensively, that quarterback will be set up to fail from the very beginning. -

the vets are a different story but with developing qbs you just cannot simply put it on their shoulders.
we still have holes in our defense at free safety
we still have PRESSING issues at Running back
we still have pressing issues at interior linemen
i think those come before reaching in the 1st on a qb when next years draft class has some fantastic qbs as well and that gives us a chance to truely evaluate henne.

PSG and KB21 make points that I strongly agree with, and it's not only because their opinions seem to coincide with my mock draft picks. I agree with these two guys because I believe that they both share the same opinions as I have. It is obviously very early to beginning deciding what we need in the draft considering we do not know what will happen with the CBA and who we will pick up in FA.
However, we do know at this time what each one of us wants our team to do in order to improve in our individual views. The majority of the fans want a QB or RB early in the draft, but I don't share that popular opinion. I on the other hand, believe we could make due with Henne or another FA QB and use our early picks on our OL. I would like to see them add a TE via FA (Z.Miller, O.Daniels, M.Lewis, D.Fells). I am not sure what the contract situations are for either Vernon Davis or Greg Olsen, but if any of those two TE were to hit FA this off season I would go after one of them as my #1 priority.
To round off our team, I would like to see the team add some depth at CB and/or S. I think we are doing well with Clemons and Bell/Jones as our starters, but would like to see decent backups who could help out on ST brought in through FA along with possibly one pass rushing OLB to compliment Wake.
I would be very interesting in knowing what players some of you guys think we should go after and why. Either in the draft or FA. While I was creating the mock that I originally posted I tried to remain realistic with the FAs that are available and formed an opinion based on who I thought would or wouldn't be available. Remember just because they are a FA at this point doesn't mean their currents teams are not going to re-sign them. Who do you all realistically think will be in a dolphins uniform next season? -
i think we will consider champ baily and nnamdi asomugah for safety and i think we might truely consider carson palmer via trade or unfortunatly vince young

Another random thought from myself...What do you guys think we could get for our 1st round pick if we don't want to stay in the 1st? I'm thinking we could trade our 1st+5th for like a 2nd, 3rd, and future pick. I would love to trade our first to get a 2nd and another 3rd. That would give us insane options in the middle rounds:
2nd- Titus Young/Jonathan Balwdin/Ryan Williams/Jerrel Jernigan/Kendall Hunter
3rd- Jerrel Jernigan/Kendall Hunter/Noel Devine/John Moffitt

I much rather roll with a 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, (possibly another 4th) than 1st, 3rd, 4th. Just another random thought, lol. -

I wouldn't trade our 1st alone for a 2nd and 3rd. That's not nearly enough for a top 15 pick.

I guess I should have qualified the orginal statement. When I say "there are no good QBs in this draft" I'm talking about the 15th pick. I don't think any of the first round guys are worth the 15th pick, (maybe Gabbert, maybe)
Now if you want to spend a 3rd or 4th on a guy like Andy Dalton, I'd be OK with that. I just don't think Mallett, Newton or Locker are top 15 material.
I'm no expert and I haven't studied any them extensively yet. With the GM League around the corner I will take a closer look at all these guys and my opinion may change. But that is my opinion as of right now.
