Watching the Dolphins lose does suck but if they were winning it still wouldn't help financialy unless you are betting on them.I too have followed them for years and still want to see the franchise become what it once was but as much as I love them I realize that there are other things in life to enjoy besides the misery of being a phin fan.

 

Having the team suck and Henne be a mediocre QB is the bitter medicine this team needs to be a better team on the other side of this crapfest. Hell, even the Saints figured that out and it took them damn near 30 years between decent QBs. A bad year and we wind up with an elite QB talent and the right coaching and we'll be set for a decade. Can you imagine Luck, Barkley, or Jones stepping in and having Marshall, Bush, Thomas, Bess, and Hartline to throw it to? That's how teams win. We also need better OL protection and a coach that understands that 1970s football is gone for good.

 

My advice to you is play fantasy football, at least then you have something to root for that you directly control.

Our Dolphins may take a while to get back to being a real contender.

Henne has played his position better than anyone else on the team has played theirs.

 

I was about to agree until I saw the better than anyone else on the team.

I think Mike Pouncey has been outstanding. I think Daniel Thomas has been outstanding. I think Brian Hartline has made very play but one when called upon. I think Brandon Marshall can make a case for that title. Brandon Fields has been very good. And although the defense hasn't been great and he's not been the creator havoc A's last season, Wake still has 2 sacks in 3 games and several pressures this past Sunday. I thought Chad Henne was one of the best players on the filled in game 1, but since that game, I've seen other Dolphins stand out ahead of him.

Both sides to the Henne debate make valid points. I concede that even though I am a huge Henne supporter, there is something to be said about how he performs on 3rd down and towards the end of games. He flashes so much brilliance that I'm still able to forgive his lack of clutchness.. But eventually he has to start making plays, even when our back is against the wall and we need to improvise to survive.. Henne would have led this team to success IF he was around during the Fiedler days.. I have no doubt that we could have won playoff games or gone deep in to the playoffs if you subsituted Fiedler for Henne. But that is not the case in 2011. Henne must carry the weight of the team on his back. Many great NFL QB's have successfully been the difference.. The question now becomes, can Henne build on his improvements and become that guy?

My money is on Henne for now.. But if at the end of the season the results continue to trend this way, I may be on the Suck for Luck bandwagon. Just being honest.

 

This is debateable. You cannot point the finger at Henne and blame him soley for losing when your team continues to make mental mistakes, drops sure TD's, misses FG's and implodes on D.

 

"Implode on D" only because our O doesn't get more points. Leader of the ship is ultimately at fault there.

What if the score was 3-0 until the last minute and the D gives up a touchdown. Is that an implosion? I find holding an offense to 16 points is pretty damn good. They've done it two weeks in a row (yeah I know Houston's score but they had a gimme TD on the 5 yard line).

When our offense is a powerhouse but we still lose because the D gives up too many points than we can honestly say, hey, our O is good. It's the Defense's fault.

 

When the offense only scores 1 TD in 2 straight games, blame HAS TO fall on the QB. Expecting to win every game scoring 16 points is unreasonable and makes watching football unbearable. This crap is supposed to be entertaining.

 

Is the leader of the offense responsible when Reggie Bush fumbles while we are driving for the 2nd week in a row?
Is the leader of the offense responsible for taking sacks when our porous OL allows a mad rush to the QB the second the ball is snapped?
Is the leader of the offense responsible when we gain yardage and miss FG's tries?
Is the leader of the offense responsible when our other "leader of the offense" drops two TD's in the endzone?

I'm not saying Henne is perfect. Far from perfect. Far from being clutch on the last drive or under control when we are near the end zone.. But the leader of the offense can't control all the over variables... And should not be held responsible. The leader of this offense is Tony Sparano, and his lack of coaching ability, motivation, practice technique or a combination of these issues is why this team is 0-3. Not Henne.

 

With all due respect, why do you assume that getting a enw QB means we won't get to the SB quicker?

Have you watched some of these young QBs play? Have you seen Cam Newton? Have you seen the success that Ryan and Flacco have had?

Long story short, we are not necessarily farther away from the SB if we draft a 1st round QB then if we keep Henne and build around him, with the team of pro bowlers that never make mistakes, which he needs.

 

Like Red said, You can make a case for Pounce and Thomas, but in the context of everything, including offseason adversity, and how he responded to that, and performed, and improved, yes, i feel like he is the most prepared player on the team, and has looked the sharpest.

 

And Chad Henne has thus far accomplished about as much as those guys, which is absolutely nothing.

 

Sorry to see how you feel, I am 59 and still believe I will see the Dolphins win a SB at LEAST once before I kick the bucket.

We need a new HC, GM, and heavens knows what else (could be a LONG list!), but I believe in our team and think Ross is smart enough to be a hands off owner and to hire the RIGHT HC & GM that we need. Call me an optimist, but I refuse to believe I'll die soon nor that Ross will not find a way to turn this team around.

The Miami Dolphins...as a TEAM...have been playing poorly.

Ths schoolyard pointing the finger and blaming this, that or the other person is pointless.

It's the only reason I watch football. It's the only TRUE team sport. No one person is more important than the other...and no player can do their job without another team member doing theirs.

 

Yet the media continues to put QB's on a pedastal. It's too bad, really. You are right in that this a team sport and without 21 other guys, the QB is worthless. I get that a QB is important. I get that they are supposed to be a leader. Nothing wrong with that. Putting everything on them in losses and assuming that wins were a direct result of their play (Sanchez) is just plain wrong.

Instead of looking at the previous Super Bowl champion QB's, I say look at the past Super Bowl Champion coaches. In my opinion, a coach means more to his team than a QB. Yes, if your QB is Curtis Painter, you have no hope. But if you have a serviceable enough QB (Henne, Sanchez, Fitzpatrick) you can win. It is possible. Not as easy, but possible.

You make your own Superbowl formula.

 

No you would just have to improve the other positions to be incredibly dynamic to make up for the QB. QB though by far is the position with the best bang for the buck as far as production. If Chad Henne can become a top 10-20 QB in the league and net the Dolphins some value it would still be in their interests to take a shot at getting a top ten QB. Say Miami trades Henne at the end of the year for a second round pick and perhaps a starting TE. Then they draft a top QB, spend their high second on Adcock the RT, and sign a RG as well as a RB. That's a pretty impressive turn around and at least you have a chance to have a truly top QB.

I don't think Henne has potential to become an absolutely elite QB, I just don't see it. A very good quarterback yes. You need more than that though unless you want to assemble an incredible pass rush, top notch secondary, a great running game, this and that. I mean heck the Ravens have a great team and they still haven't proven anything. They won't probably unless Flacco takes that next step.

The team sucks..

No "if's", "and's", or "but's" about it!

The OL is horrible - more porous than a 25 year old rusted collander.
The D has collapsed into mediocrity - they couldn't stop a granny pushing a perambulator.
The coaching is abysmal.
The wide receivers couldn't catch my cold if sneezed into their mouth.
The DB's remind me of Roberto Duran - Hands of Stone.
The QB doesn't make every throw perfectly.

But.... the groundlings in front of the stage need a villain....

Someone to heap all of their ire, frustration, contempt, and anger upon.

Guess who???

The QB, of course.

We were spoiled with the play of Dan... but.... he had a coach who wouldn't withdraw into a shell when things got a little iffy, an offensive line which blocked like a ravening pack of bulldozers, and wide receivers who could catch a mosquito by the wing and then decide if they wanted to kill it.

This QB does not now, nor has ever had any of that.

He is called upon to make throws to people who drop passes that hit them in the worst spot ever - their hands. He constantly seems to be a little harassed by 300# slobbering and snarling predatory defensive lineman seeking to rend him limb from limb, and who has a coach who couldn't lead a company of Marines on an invasion of a Marseille Cat House, let alone teach them how to handle that situation.

It ain't ALL Henne's fault.

But he will take the fall.

And probably come back to bite the Dolphins in the tookus, several times, before his days in the NFL are done. With a team. A real football team.

Unfortunately, neither he, nor we, have one in Miami at the present time.

We have a collection of players who are trying to do something that resembles playing football with very little leadership, coaching, and a modicum of talent at 'some' positions.

We have one thing for which we can be thankful.

Thank God it isn't Wannstedt at the helm.

He would pass on Andrew Luck for a reserve pass defense middle linebacker in the first round of next year's draft.

I feel your pain.I am 44 going on 45 and have also been a fan since the early 1970s.I haven't really been a fan of henne since we drafted him but i was really hoping i was wrong because above all else i want a superbowl before i die.The bad news is he is just an average qb at best and in this pass happy nfl that is not good enough to be a real contender year in and year out.We need a franchise guy and the only way to get one so you and me have shot to experience another superbowl is to go like 2-14 this year.The problem is we also need a new secondary,lb opposite of wake that can rush the passer,and an upgrade on the ol.Not to mention a coach that can get the team ready to play evey sunday.Trust me i know its hard, i live and breathe this team for close to 40 years and we have turned into the old detroit lions.I just want hope unfortunally henne,sparano,and ireland have given me none.Time to rebuild again.

 

I think just with better coaching this team could rack up some wins. We could win with Henne. Just replace the coach with a good one.

Thing is, why. Why keep one piece because there is another piece that is worse? That's bad management.

I do think Henne has played better but I also think we can do better than Henne. Those two thoughts can coexist.

 

At the end of the day you have to evaluate where Chad Henne is in the NFL. If the passing game is so critical to success in the NFL these days and you're stuck with a guy that at his best would be in the top 10-15 that's a major disadvantage. It's the same as Sparano. We have a coach that's probably anywhere from the 28th-30th best HC in the league. If I could improve my team that much just by making two moves it's something you have to consider.

I mean it's what two-three million more a year to have a very good coach in Jon Gruden versus a poor one in Tony Sparano. 3m? Really? That's how much the team pays Vernon Carey. It's almost the same at QB. Sure I can have Ken Whisenhunt as HC or I could have B.B.

It's the same thing with Henne. If there's better available you go for it. Mediocrity is easy to replace.

 

Don't forget the wanny years. We won a bit with Fiedler. At the time he had one of the best winning percentages of starting QBs. It started downspiraling with Wanny and Fiedler, don't get me wrong. But those first years we were winning. Hell we even won a few playoff games.

I am tired of losing and I feel an upgrade to the QB will help stop that.

 

Not to be the bearer of more bad news, but Hennenator, get used to it. We can all relate in one way or another, but Henne is not likely to last long here, barring a stunning recovery by the team this season. Henne is doomed, whether or not it's warranted. He was doomed the minute Ross got on that plane to the West Coast and started shopping for a new HC. It's very likely that when Ross finally finishes what he started last January with Sparano, Henne will be moving on or relegate to a backup by the new regime...

But here's the thing that bothers me the most...Even tho Henne has played reasonably well this year, much more consistently (one of his greatest faults) and better than just about any other player at their positions this year and all that, it doesn't matter to those who have soured on Henne. But that is the nature of being a fan, I guess. I mean, even after RW came back to us and began to play better and be a better team mate, I just couldn't get back on the bandwagon over him quitting on us, so it is with those who don't like Henne...

 

What's a good QB worth really? Maybe 40% of a team? There are win shares in baseball and they're somewhat accurate (huge debate). What's a quarterback in the NFL worth? Apparently with Indy it's worth perhaps 10 wins. That's why we're so critical of Chad Henne.

 

It's great to defend Henne but it's not correct to defend him by blaming everyone else but him.


He's improved considerably but has a long way to go.

 

Chill my brother. I got a few years on you, and even I realize that if this team gets "blown up" again, it won't (or, at least it shouldn't) take longer than I hope to be around to see them finally get it right. Not in today's NFL. The old adage used to be what...a three or four year plan? That s__t won't cut it anymore. Teams have turned things around more quickly. Hell, even we went from 1-15 to 11-5 and an AFCE championship just a few short years ago. My point is don't fret or worry about how long it might take if a new coach/GM are brought in. Instead, embrace the possibility that someone with some actual football knowledge and acumen might grace the halls of Dolphins HQ for a change. And, we might actually become relevant again.

As for Henne, and while he is playing better and may not be the problem, he's not the answer either. He's had plenty of time and opportunites to show he can be a franchise QB. And, last Sunday with about 32 seconds and one TO left, and the ball at midfield was his most recent. Zero yards in three downs, and a pick to seal it tells me he ain't the guy. Sorry, but after watching Marino for 17 years (I know, I know...we're all friggin' spoiled now), my eyes tell me Henne ain't got what it takes.

Not really. That's not correct on either count, really. The QB with the most potential that we had since Dan Marino was probably Daunte Culpepper. The best QB we had since Dan Marino was Chad Pennington and it's not even close.
