I'm going to nominate one and only one here in honor of my dad.
Platoon
He was a Marine in Vietnam, was the epitomy of a tough guy and I never saw him cry but once.
That one time that I saw him cry was when he took me to see the movie Platoon.
The stories he shared with me that night were pretty wild. He had never talked about the war until that night and never did again in any depth.Last edited: Apr 8, 2008dolphindebby and cnc66 like this. -
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Patton -
The Longest Day (I actually could have named this five times. It's that good. If you haven't seen it, run to the video store and get it. I'll wait.)
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Midway -
I'm going to name just two that are rather unknown in the US but well worth picking up on DVD if available:
- Das Boot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/)
- The Bridge/Die Brücke (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052654/)
I especially recommend "Das Boot" - in my most humble opinion the best anti-war movie out there. Simply devastating. -
Gettysburg
Gods and Generals
Black Hawk Down
We Were Soldiers
Troy -
Addendum ... Glory
-
Glory is one of my all time fav. movies.
-
-
The camp fire scene is my favorite as well as when Denzel has the flag.
-
Glory is definitely a great movie. I cant really stand Ferris Bueller and thought him being in it might ruin it for me, but it worked.

Glory is indeed a wonderful movie... among war movies or just in general. Denzel and Morgan Freeman together? awesome.
i live about 5 minutes from Morris Island, where that battle at the end of the movie took place. it is only accessible by boat.
developer Bobby Ginn bought it awhile back, and deeded ownership of it to the state of South Carolina for 1/4th what he paid for it, after initially wanting to build on it.
the ocean has claimed most of Morris Island now, including the fortifications and Union camp (the South abandoned it soon after the battle that the movie climaxed in.
if the tide is right and you can handle thigh deep mud, you can pretty much walk from Morris Island over to Fort Sumter now, the bombardment of which began the War Between the States.
i used to have the newspaper clippings from when they found the remains of some of the soldiers from the 54th Massachussetts regiment, which Denzel and company portrayed. they were buried in graves on the beach seperate from the white Union soldiers, and were sent to Mass. to be re-interred. the graves were found on Folly Beach, where i spend alot of time in the summer.Last edited: Apr 9, 2008 -

Those two...as well as The Guns of Navarrone, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Midway all get honorable mention.
I had trouble narrowing it down to 5... as I could have easily listed 15-20. -
I can't wait for the Mini Series on the Iraq that is coming up in July on HBO, it looks great.
