It appears Zimmer is coming back for a second interview! I will be happy with either him or Philbin.

Unfortunately since Ross became the owner of the Dolphins, settling for the second choice has been become the norm for the Dolphins. Last year Ross tried to hire Harbaugh, but when he was turned down, he settled on retaining Sparano for another season. He made it very clear in the past week that Fisher was his first choice for the Dolphins head coaching position. After what happened with Fisher and Bud Adams in Tennessee, over the Vince Young draft pick, you would have to think that Ross would have understood that Fisher would want a lot of say in the draft picks and free agent signings if he became the head coach of the Dolphins. Yet Ross appeared completely surprised that Fisher would want equal power with Ireland to make decisions on players signed or drafted by the Dolphins.
Because of his complete ignorance of the obvious, Ross is now once against left having to take his second choice as a head coach. In fact it might even be his third or fourth choice since we have no way of knowing if he attempted to interview Cowher or John Gruden.
Say what you want about the men that Wayne Huizenga hired to run the Dolphins while he was the owner. The fact is that he NEVER settled for anything but the one man he wanted for the job. Huizenga also understood when the man he hired wasn't the right man and he was willing to fire him immediately, as he did Cam Cameron after only one year as the Dolphins head coach. For all the negatives Huizenga might have had as the majority owner of the Dolphins, I have no doubt that if he were still the owner of the Dolphins and he wanted to hire Fisher, Fisher would be the head coach of the Dolphins right now. Of course Huizenga would also have been smart enough to have fired Ireland by now. In fact I think he would have fired both Sparano and Ireland after the 2010 season.Puka-head and PhinsRDbest like this. -

So in response to your question, no I didn't forget about the Wannstedt era. I saw an owner who took action to get rid of the head coach once the team appeared headed in the wrong direction on the field. Ross is the owner which waited too long to get rid of Sparano and he has decided to keep Ireland, even though the team has been going in the wrong direction for three years now. -

I was never happy with Wannstedt taking over the HC coaching job when JJ left but the reality of the situation is that Wannstedt was here for four and half years. His records during these years were 11-5, 11-5, 9-7, 10-6, 1-8. Please tell me what owner and fan base would not have been happy with the won-lost record of Wannstedt during his first four years on the job?
I do agree that Wannstedt was responsible for the downfall of the team in the immediate years after he left the team. But Wannstedt has been gone for seven years now and he is not responsible in the least for the train wreck the present regime has made of the Dolphins over the last four years. -

The fact that these hires didn't work out, still does not alter the fact that Huizenza went after and hired the coaches who were rated at the top of most teams, most desired list each of these years. Parcells was another hire which did not work out, but when Huizenga hired him out from under the Falcons, most Dolphin fans thought this was the greatest hire for the Dolphins since Joe Robbie hired Don Shula away from the Colts.
Huizenga at least was always looking to improve the product on the field, even though in hindsight all his hires did not work out. I would much rather have an owner like Huizenga at the helm than the owner the Dolphins now have. That is just my opinion. You certainly don't have to like it or agree with it. -
Why all the love for Zimmer now? What has he done? Improved a crappy defense into a championship? No hes not even been able to sustain a playoff push with Cincinnati. We have Nolan who on paper is a better coordinator than Zimmer!
I don't get why he isn't in the mix than??FLACRW likes this. -

The reality is that the only truly successful head coaches are those who actually take their team to the Super Bowl and win it. Winning the Super Bowl is ultimately what the NFL is all about. No matter how many wins a coach has in his career, if his team doesn't win a Super Bowl, he is considered a failure in the long run. This may not be fair, but it is what it is. -

This year, Miami was 6th in scoring defense, and Cincinnati was 9th. 10 points separated them, and this is with Miami having much superior talent on defense. Cincinnati's defense was 7th in yards given up. Miami's was 15th. Cincinnati was 4th in yards per play given up. Miami was 12th. Cincinnati was 7th in first downs given up. Miami was 15th. Cincinnati was 9th in passing yards allowed. Miami was 25th. Cincinnati was 4th in net yards per pass attempt. Miami was 17th. Miami was 3rd in rushing defense. Cincinnati was 10th. Miami was 3rd in yards per rush given up. Cincinnati was 8th. Cincinnati was 22nd in turnovers. Miami was 26th.
Zimmer has a defense that rated in the top 10 in everything except turnovers, and this is with guys like Chris Crocker (stunk in Miami), Nate Clements (stunk in SF), Pac Man Jones, Thomas Howard, Frostee Rucker, Domata Peko, Reggie Nelson, and Manny Lawson. Basically, it was a defense made up of cast offs from other teams, and Mike Zimmer got these guys to play great defense.GridIronKing34 likes this. -
So, if you go by one measure, Zimmer is quite a bit better, and by the other measure, slightly worse.
In 5 of 12 years total, Zimmer defenses have been top 10 for least yards allowed and 3 of 12 in top 10 for least points.
In 6 of 18 years total, Nolan defenses have been top 10 for least yards allowed and 7 of 18 yrs in top 10 for least points.
When one looks at points allowed, that is by the team, to include kick and int returns for TDs, etc. So, points allowed are not always the fault of the defense.
Anyway, they are pretty even. So, on paper Nolan isn't better than Zimmer.unifiedtheory and Rhody Phins Fan like this. -
If he is underachieving, as in should have done better with the talent he had, ok, I can give you that.
But, if I told you the next head coach we hire, will after 8 years in Miami, have a 58% W-L pct and we will reach the playoffs 5 times, would you take it? -

Going to tell all of you something right now. Fisher is not all he is being pumped up to be. Always thought, and still do, that Jeff Fishers ego is a little to big for the man. A lot of times he is on the verge of being a complete assssshollle.
Lets face it, if Cowher, Gruden and others were available this year do you really think us or the Rams would have gone out of their way for Jeff Fisher ? No, he was the only one out there that has experience and is not capable of collection social security soon.fin13 likes this. -
The Zimmer/Nolan comparisons don't even mention the personalities. Nolan is a dry dry man that needs his veterans for the motivation, Zimmer is incredibly passionate. He has quite a bit of what you look for in a HC, maybe even more so than as a coordinator. Zimmer's scheme is a phenomenal fit for the players Miami has now. None of that two-gapping nonsense we saw Nolan try to pull off that got Miami killed at the beginning of the year. Zimmer also places quite a bit of emphasis on the CB position. In many ways he's what we wish Nolan was.

This Wade Phillips talk is just asinine. I said in another thread, if he gets hired as HC I am done.
But the more I read up on Zimmer the more I like him. The only negatives I see is that he has no HC experience (which could mean nothing).
And he can be over-aggressive to a fault. But hopefully being a HC and having good co-ordinators will reign that in a bit. -
From what I seem to remember, Phillips does great the first year or 2 as HC of a team, and then it gets bad fast. He loses the team and they fall apart. He has had enough chances to succeed, but has been let go every time. I want no part of this guy either. HIM or Shotty is a stopgap that is destined to fail.

lol Like Ross or not the one thing you can not say is that he does nothing to put a good product on the field. He has proven he is willing to pay anything to get the players and now coach/s. You may not like the man but your facts are based in personal bias. Ross and Ireland with some input from Peterson will take their time and choose the one they think best fits. then we can judge.
