It was hard for me too. But after seeing the money being paid to a B/O QB and the #2 WR, I'm more comfortable with it.

 

I like Gibson, but he's gonna demand better bucks than what he may be worth....just like Wallace, however Wallace is a bit more proven....I guess it won't matter to me as long as we turn this offense around...

 

I've never been high on Jennings, and it appears neither is Joe Philbin...wich speaks volumes.

 

Although it is a lot of money, I say we benefit more from paying him and drafting a wr in the 3rd. Sure it is a big number to pay, but Wallace has proven that he has what it takes in the league talent-wise. We can't rely on a guy drafted in the 1st who never played a snap in the nfl and gibson a wr coming off his best season who got less than 700 yards.

As much as it will be tough to be ok with, Wallace at 12 mil per is our best bet of the two options.

 

I think Patterson is a hit or miss WR. The Dolphins are not in a situation talent wise, to risk their first round selection on a player who only had one year playing major college football.

Gibson has been very mediocre with the Rams and I would take Bess over Gibson, any day of the week. The Dolphins need to do what is necessary to sign Wallace. He is the one receiver in free agency who can cause opposing secondaries major problems and his signing would be good for the running game, as well as the passing game of the Dolphins.

The Dolphins can always use one of their second or third round selections to draft a WR who can come in and compete for the fourth wide receiver position on the team.

I don't think it's going to be Patterson. If the Dolphins miss out on Wallace I really think they will draft Tavon Austin at 12.

 

I don't get the Tavon Austin love that I see in every thread now. He's a combo of Pat White and Ted Ginn Jr. Pass.

 

The mention of Austin was not what I want them to do, but rather what I think they will do because I think he brings to the table some of the same things Wallace does. Although I do think your assessment of Austin is way off. I'm not sure how he compares to White at all other than the fact that they both went to WVU. White was a QB for the Dolphins, I don't think they're bringing Austin in to play Wildcat QB. And Austin is a much better route runner than Ginn and much, much tougher. Other than elite speed, I don't think there is much of a comparison there. I don't necessarily think he's worth the #12 pick because I worry about him being too much of a specialty player, but a Pat White/Ted Ginn combo he is not.

 

Fair enough, but I don't think they will do that. At least not at 12. When Ireland drafts a wide receiver or a running back in the first, I will be stunned.

Austin is a very fast (like Ginn) and very small for his position (like White). Like Pat White, he's not going to regularly gain the corner in the NFL and he's going to get popped good. At 5'8", 170, he'll take a beating. To survive, Ginn hopped out of bounds a lot. Pat White might be dead.

All that plus Ireland seems to prefer tall wide receivers in general.

 

I'd rather trade for Jacoby Ford than to draft Austin at 12.

 

jmo, but if you take the prototype Patterson over the unconventional Austin, you will lose in the end..I'm all about looking at the prototypes and somewhat sticking to a philosophy but every once and a while the special talent wins out..cough cough Russell Wilson.

 

I'd rather take Justin Hunter at 12 than Austin at 12 (I don't want to do that, but I wouldn't mind if we drafted Hunter in the 2nd).

eh, relatively little/potentially fragile guys... Russell Wilson, Randall Cobb, RG3, Kapernick, etc. all had exceptional years. But let's see who's around in 5.

 

I can't speak for anything off the field, but I think he was hampered some by his QB play based on what I've seen and know from reading. I don't think he'll ever be a star in the NFL or anything (calling stars guys like CJ, Julio, AJ Green, etc), but think he could be a good #1 eventually and has the potential to make some pro bowls. I think he is physical and has enough speed on the football field to go deep, and runs pretty good routes. I never found an issue with his hands either though. I have only seen him play like 4 games over the past 2 years though, and then highlights here and there, so maybe I saw some of his better games. I'd take him last 1st if I had a need at WR and some other guys were off the board (assuming he checks out medically).

 

Cobb is also almost 2" taller and 20lbs heavier than Austin. Just for the record.

They're completely different players though. The reason why I believe they would want Austin if they miss out on Wallace is because Austin brings similar things to the table that you get from Wallace. They aren't the same player, but they both have the ability to score on any touch and can get behind a defense with ease. I am one of Bailey's biggest fans and I hope the Dolphins sign Wallace and draft Bailey. That would give them one of my favorite NFL WRs and my favorite WR in the draft. But the reasons you want Austin (speed, playmaking ability) are different from the reasons you want Bailey (all around technician).

Wilson is short, that's his main knock. He's not a WR, he's not getting blown up by linebackers every play. If he has, you've got a problem. 5'10 210 lbs. That's a lot more muscle.

Randall Cobb - 5'10, 195 lbs. Okay, not huge, but... I'm failing to see how that compares to being over 20 lbs heavier while only 2 inches taller?

Colin Kaepernick is 6'5 233 lbs. What PLANET is that little/fragile?

 

Wallace will not cripple us. We only have 70 mil towards our cap in 2014 so its pretty nice cap wise this year and next year. Dump Dansby in 2014 and we have about 58 million in cap accounted for. I do not see Karlos Dansby playing for us after this 2013 season unless he has an absolute phenom year but they will ask to renogotiate and when he says not we can send him packing back to where ever. Never liked Dansby here or at AZ. Most overpaid mediocre LB in the NFL.

 

Dansby is certainly overpaid but he's a fantastic 4-3 MLB. What happened on this board for a large amount of the posters to have this strange opposition to Dansby and Burnett? They are both fantastic linebackers.

I'll bring Dansby back after 2013, but I agree, at a reduced salary. 6 or 7 mil per, not a penny more. He's not worth the big elite contracts but he's a solid defender, the leader of our defense, and one of the best athletes we have.

I'm not sure I'd say I hope we do, but I would not be against it because the potential of that offense is off the charts. It would cost a 1st round pick and probably staying at 12 to take him though. If the Dolphins get Wallace and Cook I don't think they'll go offensive skill guy at 12. I'd guess Cooper or a defensive player.

 

Right now Tannehill is still a question mark going forward. Until he gets some offensive weapons around him, we really don't know what he will do as an NFL QB. He might turn out to be a very good NFL QB or he just might turn out to be very average. I am not sure how you can look at his QB play last year and determine that drafting him was a" homerun".

I think that some individuals on this forum just want to believe that Tannehill is a future star, without waiting to see how he develops over the next few years. I think he is probably the best QB the Dolphins have had since Pennington, but I want to see it on the field on a consistent basis. Until he actually shows that he deserves to be considered a quality QB in the NFL. He remains a young QB in the NFL who has a lot of room for improvement. Hopefully he will eventually be the "homerun' QB this team has been looking for since Marino retired.

 

I have my reservations about Tannehill becoming great, but my goodness when I think about it, he really had minimal weaponry, maybe in the league..really inconsistent running game to boot.

 

That is why I stated that we really wouldn't know about Tannehill until he gets some real offensive weapons around him. I hope he is the long term answer at the QB position for the Dolphins because if he isn't, this team is in for a much longer rebuilding period. My reservations in regards to Tannehill is that all he proved last year is that he is a decent QB in the NFL right now. Once he gets some real weapons, hopefully he will take a giant step forward as an NFL QB. We all just have to wait and see how he develops.

I remember just a few years ago there we many on here who said Henne was the answer at the QB position after he had started for one year in the NFL. We all know how that turned out. I personally feel Tannehill has a very good chance to be a quality NFL QB, but only time will tell.

Statwise, they are similar, yes, but Henne had huge question marks about his basic decision making and ability to read defenses. Million dollar arm with a ten cent head. He had accuracy issues galore and also couldn't put touch on a pass to save his life.
I don't see Tannehill with many or any of these same question marks. He's just as raw as can be and he shows a great ability to learn and correct his mistakes. He's pinpoint accurate, on the run especially, and he can lay some beautiful lob passes in between defenders that would make Chad Pennington green with envy.
No, there were people who KNEW Henne was toast after watching him for one season. I doubt you can find anyone who KNOWS Tannehill is doomed.

Why is everybody getting bent out of shape over the average of the contract? The key is the guaranteed money. You can have a 6/90 contract with a non- guaranteed 30 million salary in the sixth year. It brings up the average but who cares. He'll never see that money.

 

First of all, I certainly don't remember anyone on this form saying Henne was toast after his first year as the Dolphins starter. As far as anyone knowing that Tannehill is doomed after one season in the NFL. That would absurd, since he obviously is still learning to play the position at the NFL level.

Tannehill certainly has many things to like as an NFL QB, as you stated. I think he is very intelligent and he has many of the attributes you look for in an NFL QB. I just want to see him continue to develop over the next few years before I am willing to commit to saying he is the long term answer for the Dolphins. I want him to be a huge success, but until he leads this team to more victories than defeats, he is still a question mark in my mind. Hopefully he will continue to develop and the Dolphins will have more talent around him on offense this year. I look forward to seeing if he can become the QB for the Dolphins, we have all been waiting for since Marino retired.
