The one credible win Miami has (NE) may have been a fluke. The other three wins came against 3 of the worst teams in the NFL atm. I'm sure analytics back that up... Would be strange if it didn't.

 

that wasn't a fluke. we just matched up against them very well. Their Oline has improved. we caught them before that happened.

You keep saying that about NE, but you're forgetting we're one horrible call from the refs of being 3-0 against them.

Now, the caveat being that simply beating X team doesn't mean you're a better team overall then that team. It just means you match up better with them.

 

Cant wait for the Stat boys to come in and argue that someones stats showing our team is 2nd best in the NFL are somehow wrong. Because...any time someone says, "Well yeh but, stats can be used to prove anything." and then they go on about how that isnt true......sooooo here ya go, someone used stats to show we are the best team in the NFL.

Dolphins are great at everything except passing the ball, so this shouldn't necessarily be surprising.

Yes and hopefully Marino working with Tanny will help to drastically improve the passing game and get that stat up to 8.5 - 9.5 yards per passing play.

 

The only thing fluky about the NE is that we didn't beat them even worse, and they have also piled up wins vs teams like Oakland, Chicago, NYJ and Minnesota, with two nice wins vs Buffalo and Cincy. So what's your point? Other than crapping on your own team.

That said, all that matters is your ranking at the end of the year.

 

This isn't new evidence; it's a formula that's been around for almost a decade and it correctly identified at mid-season (hence, where we are right now) the two teams that made it to the Super Bowl 3 of the last 5 years. Several franchises pay for this formula to study match-ups and tendencies, and it shows exactly what we see on the field. The Fins are a top 2 defense with a below average pass offense that can run the ball effectively. So I take those stats to mean that if Tannehill can figure out how to string together a series of good games, we can be a legitimate playoff threat. Because our defense really is that good.

On the flip side of things, even the formula's creator was surprised that the Dolphins ranked that high overall. He said in the article that the Dolphins clearly weren't the 2nd best team in football BUT they are playing at levels overall that should have them winning more than they actually are. So it's a compliment and an insult all at the same time.

 

We're one play from 5-2. Even at 4-3 we are only half a game from 3rd place in the AFC. We aren't the best. Not even close, but there isn't any team I feel we have no chance against. Even denver.

One of the more collective team stats that doesn't get talked about that much is points-per-drive, for and against. Miami is currently 15th at 2.1 scored...and 11th at 1.82 against.
