Kinda weird, not sure why this was done. Maybe #54 will be preserved afterall?

I hope they give all the LBs #54 just to see people whine some more.

what is it with Dolphins fans and the protection of jerseys
who cares who wore the jersey before
if it is available let them have it
zach thomas won't play here again and who gives a rats if they retire his jersey -
-
-
BTW - does "BM too" in the thread title mean he actually picked a number at one point prior to the reset?

If they give out #54, they may as well give out 12, 13 and 39 also.
The whole process of retiring jerseys is ceremonial, and absolutely a little bit silly.
But Zach is up there with the other 3.
Bob Griese was always overrated anyway.....yeah, I said it. -

The Dolphins are still trying to figure out why a SS was issued the number 54.

Griese & Csonka: undefeated and 2 time SB Champions (3 consecutive appearances in SB), RoH, and HoF
Marino: SB appearance, record after record, RoH, and HoF
ZT = consistent MLB, no SB appearances, no HoF, and long shot for Ring of Honor
54 and 99 should easily be available for anyone wanting them, any grace period on 54 has been long enough, and 99 wrote off any grace period for that one. -
They've updated it, everyone has their old numbers except Edds who has the #49 he had at camp this week. Kinda ridiculous, they shouldn't have backed down.
Now we've got three linebackers with ineligible numbers.Stitches likes this. -
I loved ZT and cheered for JT in the agua and orange...but few playoff appearance and no championship whatsoever (even AFC title game) lacks for me.
Look at who is on the Ring today....and their contribution to Winning Dolphins Football....just seems like close but no cigar for ZT or JT.
I dont know about ZT or JT for HoF either. -

typo... -
It must suck to be the Dolphin's personnel guy who is in charge of jerseys.

Right now his criticism of the FO is still fresh. And now they just had the fiasco with his number.
Timing isn't right. Would seem contrived. Gotta let it simmer down I think. Wait until training camp IMO.
The Dolphins did the right thing though. This isn't just about Zach. It's just as much about the fans. It's the fans and the media that hated the move. Zach hasn't said anything publicly, though this does go back to his words about treating their superstar/legendary players and their legacies with the requisite level of respect.
The Dolphins have to acquiesce the fans, which means they can't give out #99 this year either. -
We, as fans, hold these great players in near reverence. There is an emotional attachment to these guys that most get over the course of years, so no one likes the idea of someone else wearing a number that has been long associated with a great player. However, you can't retire everyones jersey number because he was a great player for a long time and you feel a bond with him. It is simply not possible, we will run out of numbers in very short order especially given the restrictions on which type of player wears a number in a given range. Sorry guys we have to get over it, someone sooner or later is going to get those numbers. It is inevitable. Maybe the solution would be to have a 5 year waiting period before issuing the thing out again for guys like Thomas and Taylor. This year I think I heard we have 14 lb's in camp. Don't know if that is accurate, but regardless we have a lot of guys in camp at that group. I am sure after cut's, just like last year, we will see numbers change.

Logic would indicate to wait a couple of years before handing out the numbers of great players such as 54 and 99 both of whom will end up in the Ring of Honor .
