...or is it just me?
I look at our offense, see the yards, time of possession, points, etc. and actually feel pretty good about it. However, when our defense is on the field, I get worried. We can stop the run no problem, but teams have been carving us up thru the air. I think we're set at corner. Smith is lockdown already and I think Davis will be the starter next year, but Bell & Wilson are not getting the job done. I think priority in the coming draft will be safety and we'll draft 2 of them.

The 'Phins need pass rushers way before safeties. Joey Porter and Jason Taylor aren't getting to the QB.

He hasn't started well for us and is certainly being picked on by the opposing teams but from what I remember a couple of posters pointed out his lack of coverage skills when the team announced his signing  so there would have to be huge improvement which I just can't see happening. -
Doesn't Joey's contract end this year?
-
The problem with Safety starts at Wilson. Bell isn't the greatest Safety, but he's by no means detrimental right now.
The problem is though, didn't we sign Wilson to some crazy 5 year deal? What was it this office saw in him that we're not getting?
I'm beginning to think this team feels it needs to keep an Ernest Wilford on the books every year just to give the fans someone to focus their anger on.
And I really wonder/hope/pray that Clemons can suit up sometime soon and play if Wilson doesn't produce.gunn34 likes this. -
I think we need to find someone to replace Patrick Cobbs before S or WR. Hopefully Kory Sheets can fill that role, but we will probably have to assign some of Cobbs' duties to other players. I don't think we will find any one person that can fill that man's shoes. Cobbs did all the little things that go unnoticed by the average fan.
As for the thread question regarding Saftey or WR? It would be much easier to aquire a good Safety than a #1 WR. If we don't get a TRUE #1 WR there is no point in trading. We already have decent young WR's aplenty on our roster to groom. So picking up a good safety seems more plausible.Pandarilla likes this. -
Although I would agree we do need a FS (We certainly don't need a SS, we already have 2) more than we need WR, we need OLB and MLB more than any other position.
Three things going on at Safety right now:
1) We really have 2 SS's and I think part of what we are seeing is a SS seriously playing out of position.
2) Our MLB'ers are NOT stopping the run, so the Safeties are having to support the run more than we would like
3) We are geeting zero pass rush which makes it tougher on Girbil who is already playing out of position to cover.
Oh, I forgot the BONUS reason
BONUS) Girbil is playing really ***tty back there :up:gafinfan and adamprez2003 like this. -
Well, imho Da Gerbil had his best game so far in Miami against the Jets.
Granted he had that penalty, Safeties are supposed to bring the lumber though, the cat who got burned was YBell, he is still chasing David Clowney...
And I do agree with the thought that the passrush is not very strong so far, crossing routes and deep routes take time to develop, the prush is just not getting there right now.Fin D likes this. -

I could see two QB's going very early. 1 TE, 2 LBers, Dez Bryant, Suh....
Really depends on who is picking where IMOAgua likes this. -
To be honest, "no" we really do not need either position..at the moment.
What is needed is the cajones to admit Gerbil is not working out and starting Ty Culver over him, that is 27 million in a admittance, but if we want the defense to improve, that is the fastest way to do so.
As for the Wr, keep in mind Greg C, Fasano, Ginn, Ricky W, all have seen their average per catch...almost double or double with Henne as the Qb, we may need time for our current Wr to develop with Henne more so than fresh bodies at Wr.Pandarilla, gafinfan and Fin D like this. -
I agree with Padre, unless an incredible WR falls in our laps, we address about every other position first.
We may not have a dedicated #1 guy, but we have a whole bunch of kids each with their own added values.gafinfan likes this. -
my vote is for Clemons ... however, if we keep winning, it's doubtful that this staff will put Clemons out there on a regular basis ... only if the season takes a turn will they run Clemons out there ... i don't think they want Davis, Smith and Clemons out there at the same time right now ...

Yes. Wilson and Bell are the same exact player and cannot co-exist out there. We need a true FS out there. However, I feel we have that guy on our roster. Chris Clemons. I loved him at Clemson and was praying we'd pick him when I seen him still available in the 5th. He was the fastest safety in the draft, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him start next year. The question then would be what to do with Bell/Wilson. They're getting paid too much to sit on the bench, and I'd expect us to try and move one next offseason.

We need a safety and a ILB first, then maybe a TE.

Joey's got 2 more years on his deal after this.
He got $20 million guaranteed, but it was a $12 million 'option' in '07 and $8 million over the rest of the deal in '08. So by my elementary math and cap skills, and considering Porter's $4.9 million base next year, I would have the cap hit being $3.9 million if we released him next year. It would be $3.1 million if we'd have given him all $20 million up front.
Note: this is going off numbers I got in 2007. I don't know if there's been any kind of alteration of the deal since.gafinfan and siciliansith like this. -
I remember listening to to pat kirwan on sirius radio saying at training camp he was worried about the dolphins safeties.I guess he did not like what he saw in coverage.
I think we need to see more of cameron wake on 3rd down maybe at the expense of joey porter who is putting no pressure at all on the quaterbacks. -
Clemons & Culver are excellent
we're fine @ safety w/ Bell & Wilson
need more game time
to coordinate the defensive backfield
this is a project in the making
they will only improve -
JT has 3 which is about par for him throughout his career as he gets better as the season wears on.gafinfan likes this. -

The 3 biggest concerns I have position wise are (no particular order):
FS
LB
WR
I believe we need both ILB and OLB. -
It would be nice to have 1 of them old school bone crushing safeties. Like John Lynch, Ronnie Lott and Troy Palimidontknowhowtospellhisf'nname.

Did somebody say bone-crushing FS?
