Listening to Gase, it looks like he's currently set on seeing if he can make Tannehill a franchise QB, so I see no indication they'll take a QB in the 1st this year:

The interesting thing is that while Gase seems like he's going to try and do everything to see if Tannehill can be made into a franchise QB, he states things in a non-committal way, meaning he's leaving himself an easy out if this doesn't succeed. I suspect if we take a QB high, it'll be next year not this year and only if Tannehill doesn't work out. Either way I like Gase's attitude.

 

So, you want to go all in on a definite project at QB and trade away a decent QB who's still developing? That makes sense.

Armando's not going to get fired if that decision backfires. Trading Tannehill sounds great but coming off of a subpar year with a huge contract? We wouldn't sniff a decent pick for him. So spending a high pick on a Qb then shipping off Tannehill is saying we are rebuilding the team and I don't see the team even considering that.

I just know he's starting next year and so I'm going to hope we can start building a solid team around him or he actually breaks out.

Armando's acting like drafting BPA is a revolutionary idea.

Unless his argument is we should have been been bring in competition all along (not just camp arms like Seth laboto, that other QB from NDSU, etc...). Then which i agree with.

I like Tannehill for what he is right now; knowing there's room for growth (with better protection and a consistent running game.)

$tills there's no reason fellers as draft knowledgable as ourselves can't imagine a scenario where Gase accepted the challenge; but starts the contingency plan with a mid-round pick. I'm sure OP would have drafted Cousins and then Wilson after Newton had a not-so-good sophomore year.

I agree, I am not a big fan of the hire, but I like Gase's attitude, and yes he's being a bit non comital, because at the same time he is saying there is a QB problem, without actually saying it, so it'll be interesting to see what transpires.

Yeah, he's saying there's a problem with what the QB has been given. He's saying there was a problem with the development. People who are construing anything Gase has said as there being a problem with Tannehill are simply showing their bias.

 

I wish we had the luxury of drafting a QB every years like in Joe Thomas or Ron Wolf days...the draft had 17 rounds... but this team has too many needs to fill with its top picks .This regime is all in on developing THill .Year 5 is supposed to be the year to determine if you have a keeper or its time to move on.Next year could be different.

How do you know he believes in Tannehill? He signed a five year contract, therefore he has the security to move on from Tannehill very quickly if he doesn't think he is the long term answer at the QB position.

He wasn't around when Tannehill was drafted and therefore it is up to Tannehill to prove he is worth the contract he signed for before this past season. Gase has next year to determine if he wants to go forward with Tannehill or not.

Hopefully Tannehill will show vast improvement next year. Yet if he doesn't, I don't think Gase will have any problem letting Tannehill go after next season and starting from scratch with a new QB of the future.

 

Just read the article. Nothing shocking here. He's just saying that the QB position should not be left out of BPA consideration. It's basically an argument against the idea that if, in any given round, the BPA is a QB and there are other good but lesser players available from other positions, the Dolphins should take the QB and not fill other positions until they are certain they have found their franchise QB.

The only thing he doesn't address is odds. In the first or maybe second round a BPA QB has a much higher chance of being a franchise QB than a BPA QB in the 7th round. So one might want to consider 'weighing' the position of the players available against the round in which they're being picked.

Other than that, nothing really controversial here.

 

Would the new QB who needs time to develop still play with the same horrible OL? Seems a way to regress not progress.

 

Use a high pick to land a project QB who will struggle under this OL while paying a QB 20 million not to play.... You will see how quickly that "5 year contract" is shown to be just a piece of paper.

 

The thing with the OL priority (and I believe that it is) is that the OL will not, cannot, be fixed with one or two picks. Instead, the OL needs to be fixed using several different factors - talent, coaching, scheme, depth, etc. On the other hand, QB is the one position on the team that can be improved - night and day - with a single, great pick.

That's not to dismiss the importance of coaching or talent development. Rather we have to recognise that QB is a unique position in that it comes down to one man, and thus is uniquely suited to bring improved through the draft.

 

You assume he will struggle. The Seahawks did a similar thing. Gave big money to a FA QB, drafted Wilson and realized Wilson was better, so they started him.

They gave some to Flynn... but they were mostly HOPING he would be a decent starter. Has he done anything since? Hope springs eternal.

My opinion is that I do not think this draft class is strong enough to get a good quarterback at 8.

Everyone mentioning Carr and Bortles. Both had decent Tannehill like seasons and both their teams had losing seasons. Bridgewater did have a winning season, however as someone who owned him in fantasy, it was not much because of him. Winston and Mariota looked fun, we will see how they do their second year when teams have plenty of NFL tape of theirs to dissect. Heck, even Luck before getting injured looked very streaky and mediocre, he has yet come close to beating the Patriots. RGIII and Colin got benched. Locker and Gabbert have been huge disappointments.

People are acting like there are a plethora of perfectly amazing young quarterbacks and here we are stuck with Tannehill. Yes, last season was disappointing, however it was still one of the better seasons we have had from a quarterback since Marino.

I do not see the point of drafting a quarterback in the top 10. maybe next year when Tannehill's cap number reaches close to 20 million and we are still in the top 10. Right now it is a waste of resources that can go into making this team better.

 

Alot of teams probably wish that.
Broncos - I like our QB situation at this point better than theirs.
Chargers - I like ours better. When is he retiring? When do we get replacement? Is he ever getting us to the SB? Not likely.
Cowboys - Exact same questions. Elite QB but has never gotten us to the SB. Probably will not. Tons of money invested.
Browns - Got to draft an un-proven and not-really-ready QB to start immediately.
Chiefs - Do you think their fans are tickled to death with Smith? I doubt it.
Titans - Think they have their QB... but nothing around him.
Falcons - QB getting old and degressing IMO.
Bucs - Picked first because they sucked... only a little better so far and got his coach fired in a way.
Saints - Same as for Chargers and Cowboys but at least he did get them to the promised land.
Cards - Palmer getting up there too... maybe they make it this year. Maybe the Raiders should have kept him?
Rams - Still searching... and stinking.
Seahawks - found a gem... but who is backing him up?
Vikings - All in with Bridgewater... doubt that is too thrilling. Without AP... he would struggle greatly IMO.
Redskins - Finally found their guy... but wasn't that a giant mess. How many draft picks given up for the wrong guy?
Eagles - Dang... they are in terrible QB spot. Bad team... but not bad enough for top un-ready QB draft pick this year.
Giants - I guess they are set for awhile... but Eli has his struggles too.
Bengals - Have their guy... but complain all the time about playoff wins = none.
Steelers - Same as Cowboys, Chargers, Patriots, Broncos... Big Ben is getting up there. Their backups are not really good IMO.
Jets - ??? Fitzgerald just threw away their playoff chances... and is likely not even on the team next year.
Bills - Is TT the guy... I just don't think so but they are giving him a chance.
Pats - Can SuperTom keep on going? And for how long?
Jags - Looking good for the future... but had a top pick and a talented QB available that year.
Texans - Holy Moly!!!! ... at least we don't have their QB worries but you wouldn't know it from reading here sometimes.
Colts - Franchise was hurt basically because his OL sucked too... and went backwards in developement this year.
Raiders - Looking good but again, top rated QB available with high draft pick because whole team stunk.
Chiefs - Are they happy with Smith... no way, no how. He is basically a stop-gap QB at this point IMO. Too good to get high pick.
Ravens - Alot of money in Flacco... I would rather have RT.
Bears - I think fans of his are few and far between. Do you think the fans are glad to have him. Would they rather have RT?
