should be interesting to see...that's if he makes the team of course.
lol damn if his best friend Schneider won't give him a full time job this might be it for Jeffy's days working in a front office.

Jaysus guy, drop the Ireland vitriol already. He is gone. "Let that sink in."
Lazor used a lot of TE plays while at Virginia, so it makes sense that he would want a bevy of TEs. Egnew has been much maligned here. The guy was basically a receiver in college. Sherman was all about doing things his way, not simply using guys to the best of their ability or skillsets.Claymore95, Aqua4Ever04, DPlus47 and 12 others like this. -
I think that Egnew has an uphill fight to make the roster, especially sine we look to carry 6 WR on the 53. That said, if his skills fit Lazor's scheme better than the other backup TE, he's got a chance.

"Egnew is liked more than we realize"
Nah, my prediction, let us see if it comes to pass -

And definitely have to add Stephen Williams, Damian Williams (Both have been on NFL rosters for the past four seasons; Damian has return ability and will likely compete on STs for that role), Armon Binns and Matt Hazel to the WR competition.
If the WRs play well - I can see Miami keeping 6 which would make the TE competition tougher. I do think Egnew and Hoskins will be competing not only against each other and the other TEs but also against the WR's for the final slots at their respective positions; and RB will factor in.
The number of WR or RB Miami will be partly determined by who wins the return duties on KR/PR.padre31 likes this. -
I'm a fan! I've watched all of his games. I've read a lot of what the writers have written. Listened to others on this board. And he's no longer "on scholarship" from being an early pick - plus we have a new GM, not the guy who drafted him.

anything else? Or do you want me to bring a notarized "we hate Egnew" letter from Philbin himself? What the ****s the point of this place if we can only post "qualified" opinions?Fin-Omenal, Eop05 and Unlucky 13 like this. -

As others have pointed out, if there is a money settlement Ireland had with the Dolphins, he probably wants to sit with that before taking a job. The consultant role would not have violated that severance agreement. A paying full-time job would.

I agree with the uphill battle.
I see the following making the team at WR:
1. Wallace
2. Hartline
3. Gibson
4. Landry
5. Matthews
6. Hazel
At TE:
1. Clay
2. Lynch
3. Sims
I think the fact that Egnew is most valuable split out as a WR hurts his chances. But I do like that Lazor will use Egnew to the best of his abilities rather than trying to jam the square peg into the round hole. Hopefully Egnew thrives like this and surprises me. For now I have doubts -
Egnew was lined up in the slot 47.6% of his passing snaps according to PFF last year. That's not really a trivial amount, especially considering he had a pretty legitimate role as a lead blocker to knock that percentile down.

I never expect Egnew to be anything but a below average TE in the NFL. I was hoping this was a position they would upgrade in free agency or the draft. Right now, other than Clay, I really don't see another TE on the roster who is going to be a player opposing defenses have to concern themselves with.
As far as Ireland not being offered a position with the Seahawks is concerned. He might eventually get a position as a scout with another NFL team in the future, but I don't ever see him being offered a GM position with another NFL team. I think he clearly showed that he doesn't have the ability as a GM to build a winning football team.
The fact he lasted six years with the Dolphins as their GM, still blows my mind. -
The problem with this idea that Michael Egnew has an uphill climb to even make the roster is he is currently right now the #2 tight end on the roster. He could fall to #4 on the depth chart, which would be the danger zone, but he's not there right now.
Dion Sims is the guy that needs to be sweating. The new General Manager just drafted a tight end that fits Sims exact archetype.
I for one look forward to seeing what Michael Egnew can actually do when given an opportunity to impact the passing game. -
I do believe that Egnew's skill set is better suited as basically big WR. He may be the only TE on the roster with a chance to become a seam threat, but I still don't have much hope for him developing into anything special. That being said, I don't see much on the roster that's in his way. I expect they'll keep at least 3. Clay is obviously #1, but after that there's not much. I like Sims the best, but he's similarly raw. Gator is an UDFA long shot. I don't see much in Lynch. (Unless there's some character issue, I think will come to regret taking Lynch over Seastrunk). I just don't see how it can be said that Egnew is facing long odds to remain among the top three in that group.

Since we don't have a pure FB on the roster, and 4 RBs seems like a reasonable number for that position, I would expect us to keep 4 TEs too.CWBIII, ToddPhin, DPlus47 and 1 other person like this. -

Also it should be noted that whether we think Egnew makes a good fullback or not, he's the guy (aside from Clay) with the experience being tried at that spot. Sims has no experience there and I don't know that I saw Lynch playing there in college either.
Gator Hoskins could get there, though. I think Hoskins is really Egnew's top competition for a roster spot.ToddPhin likes this. -

Thus Eggnog at FB last yr, and he performed fairly well at that, now they are looking at Eggnog at flex Wr to create mismatches
Yes, Eggnog, I gave Olivier Vernon the lame nickname of "baby squid" and he had a great season, thus Egnew is Eggnog..per Muck calling him that last season
Really his nickname should come straight from the Sopranos=Big *****.. -

It's honestly amazing what a few short minutes of highly edited cinematic drama during Hard Knocks can do to peoples perceptions about a player.
If it weren't for Hard Knocks there would actually be lots of reasons to be bullish on Michael Egnew going forward. Here was a guy that was a pseudo wide receiver in college, a huge guy with incredible athletic ability, whom everyone criticized as not being a true tight end because he can't block. It was always understood that this guy is a good receiver though. So what happens during his two years in the pros? He ends up the most effective blocking tight end on the team, to the point where he gets moved to FULLBACK even though his body type isn't even close to that of a fullback.
Take a step back. That's a player everyone knew to be a good receiver but a sh-tty blocker, who has now become a pretty good blocker. Shouldn't we be bullish on that guy then?
Just sayin. Michael Egnew is pretty much reason #1a why I would do everything in my power to decline participation in Hard Knocks, if I were an NFL team.
Can he run routes and catch the ball?

I think this is great news. Egnew has already made progress in his blocking in the two years that Campbell has been riding his ***, so he might be more versatile than we think he is. Its nice to see they're going to be using him more in line with the skill set he had coming out of Missouri.

Michael Egnew was never a particularly great tight end prospect coming out. I had him third in the class but only because that class was very weak behind the top two guys (Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen).
I had Chase Ford nearly as high and I notice despite his UDFA status he's now turned up in Minnesota as their #2 TE behind Kyle Rudolph and he had a +3.5 PFF Overall grade last year on 151 snaps.
It was a weak class behind Fleener and Allen.
Ladarius Green performed the best among the guys after Fleener and Allen...but that's a very recent phenomenon. He played only 2 games in 2012 and until Week 11 of 2013 he had caught a total of 11 balls in the two seasons combined. Then he got more opportunities (not unlike Charles Clay) and he blossomed.
I had some doubts about LaDarius coming out because he looked and played like a wide receiver instead of a tight end. But it seems the NFL loves to teach us over and over again that those are the things that end up important in tight end prospects. Guys that big that play like wide receivers and boast compelling size/speed find a way of turning up in the long run (see: Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Jimmy Graham, Jeff Cumberland, Jordan Reed, Joseph Fauria, Luke Wilson, etc).
Michael Egnew fits right in with that crowd. -
