I am no authority in the draft. having said that, we have a number of legitimate pundits on board that I'd like to begin hearing from about how our draft may evolve. just as a starter & understanding free-agency is not over & we could still acquire a legitimate starting RT & RB. which could change things significantly, I will offer you my limited thought on Miami's first four picks.:
1) Zach Martin, OL - N.D. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=89682&draftyear=2014&genpos=OT
2) Carlos Hyde, RB - Ohio http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=89631&draftyear=2014&genpos=RB
3) Brandon Thomas, OL - Clemson http://profootballspot.com/_/nfl-dr...andon-thomas-og-clemson-scouting-report-r1994
4) Ryan Shazier, LB - Ohio State http://stripehype.com/2014/02/09/nfl-draft-scouting-report-ohio-state-university-lb-ryan-shazier/
what do you think? how do you see the first rounds as proceeding for Miami on day one of the draft?
if we can acquire a legitimate starting RT & RB in free agency, I'd go with the best player on the board with every pick. there's depth & should be plenty of talent in the later rounds. what's your call?

Shazier is looking like a 1st Rounder, early second at worst.
Like the first 2 picks though....although I know no Zach Martin from Arizona. -
I like a RB with our 2nd pick...but Carey is by far the best RB in this draft. He is no track star but his actuall game talent is tremendous. Vision, power, agility, aggressiveness, ability to catch the ball, etc....I could go on for days!! We need to draft this kid for sure

thank you. my bad! has been corrected.

I hope we fill the starting OL through free agency, so we can go totally BPA in the 1st. I'd love to get Shazier at 19, or perhaps Cooks or possibly Beckham if he falls to there.

My DREAM draft right now:
1. CJ Mosley
2. Weston Richburg
3. JuWan James
4. Will Sutton
5. Ross Cockrell
6. Devin Street
7. Eddie Lackey
Supplemental draft:
2nd round pick for Melvin Gordon who somehow became ineligible, maybe he sold autographs for cheese or whatever those people from Wisconsin like. -
Just don't see the value in a G in the first round. Similar to the Pouncey selection. I think you take someone at a bigger position of impact that high personally. Martin is going to be a popular pick for pundits and draftniks in our spot though unless we add another G before the draft.

Some people don't even have him being drafted. Seems opinions are all across the board on him.
Hyde is my favorite back of the bunch. -

With the moves we've already made, we're now a playoff team IMO.
If I were GM, I'd go BPA 1st & 2nd rounds, then o & d lines the rest of the way unless an amazing player falls. We need young guys to groom behind the others we have right now. Next draft, go for the play makers....and as many as you can get.SICK likes this. -

I'm a big fan of Tre Mason, especially if we are running anything like Kelly's offense. Mason has moves like Shady. Great balance and elusiveness. The other backs, Hyde, Carey, Seastrunk are all nice as well. I think we can add a nice back somewhere in this draft even that kid West from Towson.

All the experts keep saying it's a really deep draft so I'm pretty sure we can pick up a good back. Just need one who is solid in all 3 aspects, not a superstar.

We had weaknesses. That's true. We also had strengths. We didn't get to 8-8 by divine right. That's not our floor. The roster had some specific strengths that got us there. One of those was the extraordinary defensive tackle rotation of Odrick, Starks and Soliai. They had such an effect on both phases, especially the passing game which is hard to do. It was the equivalent of what the Seahawks needed to buy with both Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril in addition to already owned assets like Chris Clemons, Clinton McDonald, Red Bryant and Brandon Mebane in order to produce. We were able to get that with the three-man defensive tackle rotation plus Cam Wake, Olivier Vernon and Dion Jordan.
To me that was a feat and it could be hard to reproduce it when you have Soliai going away, replaced by a 300 pounder that is completely unproven in pass rush, and Starks getting a year older. We could be just as good against the pass but worse against the run. Or vice versa. And as of yet we have the exact same linebacker group as a year ago so if the defensive tackles are worse against the run that would probably flow through to the bottom line.
People like to pretend our run defense was atrocious last year as if it can't get any worse. Trust me there are like 10 teams out there that would look at us and say, oh yes...it can get worse. Miami's run D as a whole was mediocre, right smack in the middle of the league. It generally left a bad taste in our mouths because it got worse in the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins did have a sh-tty offensive line but right now we only have three guys and one of them we're not sure is an upgrade over what we had a year ago.
This is just a general philosophy thing I have but if you were a crappy team like a 5-11 team then I think there's validity to the idea of being able to "build" on what you did last year. But if you were an 8-8 team there are far more forces at work trying to make you worse, that you have to overcome every off season in order to actually try and get better. Most people see a record and say well all we have to do is be a game better than last year, that's easy. I see a record and think it's also easy to be 3 games worse than last year because that's the NFL.
Right now I need to see more in the acquisitions phase before I even start forecasting that they maintain the 8-8. And I sense that Las Vegas feels the same way. -
Ryan Tannehill's progression will ultimately decide our fate IMO. -
The Patriots are doing everything in their power to stymie it though. Grabbing both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner was a direct attack on the Miami passing game. We won one of those Patriots games last year and we lost one. The Dolphins want to win both. The Patriots want to take the game they lost back.
The game we won featured Mike Wallace going off for 100+ with a TD, plus Hartline and Rishard Matthews combining for another 150+ or so. The game we lost, Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas actually went off for 136 yards on 27 carries. They didn't try and get better by improving their run defense...they went after the thing that actually beat them.
Of course they were also beaten that way by Peyton Manning in the playoffs so it's obviously not JUST about Miami.
But I think they're a little less disturbed by the offense than the national media and public are. I think they always knew they were hitting the reset button a little bit on the offense and it would take a little bit to get it going. Things started out pretty rough as they averaged only 22 points per game in the first 8 games. But they averaged 33 points per game in the final 8 games...and I think they figure that won't just disappear, especially as they've re-signed Julian Edelman.
That's why I think they prioritized the corners Revis and Browner before they started to work on the pass catchers. They'll use the draft to upgrade the trenches, if I don't miss my guess.Fin-Omenal likes this. -
The Patriots lost both Brandon Spikes and Aqib Talib. But among them, Talib got PAID. Spikes did not. He got a 1 year, $3.25 million deal.
And you'll notice that the Patriots were in a hurry to fill Talib's vacancy with Darrelle Revis and then also adding Brandon Browner. They're not tripping over themselves to add a run stopping middle linebacker.
This is where if I'm Miami I look to call their play a little bit. They're not in a hurry to improve or even maintain the run defense...so we should be in a hurry to blow them apart with a fantastic ground game. But I guess we started off so deep in a hole needing 4 out of 5 offensive linemen PLUS a new running back, that may be too ambitious for us. We can thank the previous GM for that. -
If you get down by 10 to New England next year you are going to have a very hard time coming back, and even if you do? You then have to stop Tom Brady. And the best way to do that is and has always been pressure without blitzing.
I really am looking forward to Tom Brady retiring.
