A Niceville High School football player died Saturday morning after he was injured Friday night in a game against Fort Walton Beach High School.
Taylor Haugen, a sophomore wide receiver, was injured in a collision with two Fort Walton Beach players during the second half of the game, Okaloosa County Schools Superintendent Alexis Tibbetts said.
"It's a terrible tragedy," Tibbetts said. "It's such an emotional time. It's almost impossible to explain how emotional it is for the family, team and coaches."

jeez, how aweful. prayers for them all.
-
unofficial word is that a rib broke and slit his spleen open causing massive internal bleeding
-
Every parent's and coach's nightmare...a good kid playing a game of sports instead of out causing some kind of trouble. Life is not fair.
-
In middle school (8th grade), me and the other DE sandwiched their QB on pass play, and he ended up playing through the rest of the 4th qrt. Well we found out the next day that he had to go to the hospital that night because he was pissing blood. We had cracked one of his ribs too, not sure if it was his spleen that bled or not.

Good lord.
Prayers go out to the family -
Thats sad, My heart felt condolences to the boys family. as a parent, that would be your worst nightmare.

Terrible thing to hear for someone so young especially. :pity:
-
That is definitely a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved, especially that young man's parents.
calphin likes this. -
Freak accidents happen. Maybe they should require all player to wear rib protection, especially amateurs and especially under 18.

I've had cracked ribs before from playing football and I also continued playing.
I heard a pop when I hit the turf and felt some pain but it wasn't debilitating so I kept playing. I thought maybe I had pulled a muscle
The orthopedist said if I had taken another shot to the same area I could have been severely injured or killed as the rib would have just been driven into my body. -
From that video that was posted I can only think of how it went down, he ran a curl route ball was high he jumped up LB was running to deliver a big hit while the corner hit him in the back, the main force came from the front while the hit in the back pushed his spleen into the cracked ribbed.
Its truly a tragedy, I can't imagine what his family, friends, players, coaches what their going through right now :(
