I know most people probably connected the dots by now that Brian Hartline seems to (for whatever reason) own defensive coordinator Ray Horton's coverage scheme, but for those of you who would like to know WHY, here is a piece for you.

This one was a bit long in the birthing because of some technical difficulties with the pictures on the website.
But hey, it's NOT a slide show, so there's that. :)

He's got a nice "all weather" skill set in terms of his ability to get open with his route running.
He can get open consistently on those comeback patterns against tight man coverage. He also presents himself quickly on speed outs against off coverage. I thought that route he ran in the final section in particular was nifty. He essentially faked the stop-and-go and turned it into a comeback or out route. With that kind of coordination he should be able to run shake routes and dino routes and whatnot.
The thing he just doesn't really do is get yards after catch. He'd be a complete receiver if he could do that.cuchulainn and Stringer Bell like this. -
Agreed. One thing I noticed is that Wallace doesnt seem to be as quick as hartline in presenting himself to the qb on his routes. Not sure if that's more a product of the specific routes he's running or what. I think it's going to take a combination of better oline play and time for Tannehill to develop a legit rapport with Wallace. He just doesn't seem comfortable waiting the extra second or so for Wallace to break on his routes. Maybe deservedly so.im excited to see the next evolution of this stage on Sunday.

Good breakdown. It makes me wonder though if what's good for Hartline is always good for the rest of the offense. Helping on Wallace and Gibson and limiting them means you have bank more on Brian. This is where you need the TE

This is the kind of analysis that is severely lacking on the major networks.

I was DM'ing with him prior to taking the B/R job. I told him about the offer. He advised me very strongly that I should do it because they have a scary good business plan but sorely need credibility, in his words.Mile High Fin, MikeHoncho, PhiNomina and 2 others like this. -

He knows about sorely needing credibility...expert at it.
That said...congrats again at the gig, you're good for it. -
They are definitely improving. they used to be plain awful, but give them credit for evolving to what they are now.

Thanks... looking forward to the article once I can get to it!!! -
Awesome job like always, I really enjoyed.

Good stuff.
Hartline is playing at a high level right now. Wouldn't surprise me to see him make the Pro Bowl this year.

Great article Chris... Keep it up...

That's a great write up. Really enjoyed reading that. Nicely done.

NOt to get OT, but if you're interested CK (or anyone else) I thought this was a great video of Outside Zone Cut-Ups with Broncos coach Alex Gibbs showing Terrell Davis' zone blocking and breaking it down in a film study. Very cool.

Okay, finally pulled myself off youtube and read the article.
Really good. Clean, clear, informative, relevant. I would read this daily if there were a daily version of it.
Nice stuff, CK. -

Even on the TD catch, that had to be a perfect throw because the separation he had was only about 1 yard. -
If one looks at the Wallace picture thread, he has separation THill just misses himLarryfinfan likes this. -
I don't agree, but if Wallace's YAC this year is *drastically* lower than in Pitt you may have a point. -
I suspect fans may be a touch disappointed with Tannehill to Wallace this yr, especially earlier in the year. -

Thanks KB. Gotta watch some before bed. :) -
People don't pay enough attneiton to wide receivers lower bodies as they catch, imo. Everyone gets so wrapped up in watching the ball and the receivers hands that fans forget to assess the receivers' lower body control. How balanced do they stay? How athletic are they at catching so they are positioned smoothly to continue running? Do they tend to leave their feet unneccesarily and lose leg drive and acceleration?
Bess, for instance, right back to his Hawaii film, showed a habit of leaving his feet on almost every catch, including every one that was easily within grasp. He jumped when he didn't need to. Well, he hopped up in the air a bit. I would guess it helped him focu on the catch. The down side was he lost a millisecond of time he could have been generating force and momentum.
Hartline, if you observe him, narrows his base as he catches. For some reason he likes to bring his feet close together. While this is great for toe-tapping a sideline, its terrible for maintaining balance after the catch. This is why he goes to the ground so easily the moment there is contact and he is jostled. He becomes like a top, standing on one point instead of two. -
Hope you don't get in trouble for the no slides how thing, I was under the impression all articles had to be slide shows for pages hits. One of the reasons I never visit BR. -
Great article and thanks for sharing!
I think Hartline's game is really under appreciated by many. He's not the sexy fast or big WR that many of the talking heads fall in love with. Throughout the history of the NFL, guys who didn't have crazy measurables had successful careers become masters of route running, the mental game, effort and having great hands. That's why I love his game so much. Now that Wallace can take away most of the attention I think Hartline is going to blow by last years numbers. -
-
his intentions, stares down receiver- I think Fasano , not sure. The Safety reads him like a book and breaks to the sideline, takes it to the house iirc. -
Although the one nit I'd have is that the 12 yard comeback is traditionally supposed to be considered a play where you can get a good amount of YAC. Well, according to videos I've seen of wide receivers coaches talking about it, anyway.rafael and cuchulainn like this. -
And truthfully I think B/R shoots themselves in the foot in that respect with their choice of topics to write about. It can be very gimmicky at times and often far too broad in scope, to where you know this author had a short amount of time to research and write about a topic that could inspire encyclopedias, and therefore what you're getting is a mile wide and inch deep. The topics themselves sometimes don't allow for much exploration of detail without the pieces coming out unbalanced. -
To be fair, the constant slideshows can be tedious on B/R, but they can also also be entertaining as well sometimes (well, I like them occasionally!). It's getting the balance right between serious articles and fun slideshow-type ones that they need to work on.

hartline's great catching ability is also his YAC downfall in my opinion. He's catching balls that people of his athletic ability might not be able to catch. He goes balls out to catch that ball. And also he's really easy to knock down. He's not going to muscle anyone in this league.
