I ask because I love the Dolphins, but do not love how Ross and Ireland appear to be running the team. It's reached the point where I woulkd, logically, like to root for a team whose ownership, GM and philosophies I believe in....
But my heart says "no" and won't let go.
Do you believe there is a way to 'get over' a team, like you get over an ex-girlfriend, so you can find and fall in love with someone new? Because I feel trapped.
(Something about the idea of switching brings to mind words like 'disloyal, fairwaether, bandwagon, traitor' and so on for me. But I stuck it through watching every game of Wanny, of Cam Cam's season without ever questioning it because I believed in the type of people at the top of the organization. I no longer trust the hand on the rudder. But I can't be disloyal. I have to fall out of love, so switching teams wouldn't be 'cheating'.)

Maybe if you were never in love with the franchise to begin with.

I feel like a damned battered wife. lol. Wtf. Maybe I just cared too much about the Phins to begin with.
This latest stuff about Ross deferring to Ireland's choice of coach, and them losing McCoy (who sucks anwyays) because they want to choose his DC for him... a DC who is unproven and who hasn't even agreed to BE our DC. Straws breaking the camels back for me.padre31 likes this. -

Well, I stepped away from the phins during the late Wanny era through Saban, I just couldn't take it, knew they were making the wrong moves, but with nothing to do about it, I abstaned from watching football altogether.

This team has been through worse things than where we stand now. If you're a real fan, the only way you can find a new team to cheer for is if your team ceases to exist. If you're not, then by all means, pick a new team. Just know you'll never have the respect of any of the real fans of the team you choose. And nobody will ever take any trash talk from you seriously because they know you left your old team when things got tough for greener pastures.
We can complain and gripe all we want. We have that right as fans. But when you jump ship you lose the right to call yourself a real fan of any team.mbsinmisc, Trowa and Jcouch1021 like this. -
Honestly, it's never even crossed my mind to switch teams. Been a phin fan my whole life. And I've never seen them win a super bowl.

It is easy to be a fan when the team is good. What is the point if you cannot handle the team being bad?
IMO, there are no more true fans than Lion fans. Those fans went through real crap. Not this medicore crap that Dolphin fans are complaining about. "Oh no, my team isn't the best in the NFL, WHAAAAAAA!"SeanP, MAFishFan, unluckyluciano and 13 others like this. -
It's like a marriage, for better or worse......but you still never leave and your love just get's stronger every day. I could never stop the love I have for this team, it's just something you can't control. Try leaving and you'll find yourself sneaking around trying to find little tid bits of info, checking in on what's going on.....it's like that first real love. You will never really get over it and you are always wondering what their up to now. As hard as you try, you just can't shake it and always find yourself coming back for more

I made up my mind that if I ever stopped being a Dolphin fan, I would simply stop watching NFL football altogether. Since I can't bring myself to do that, I remain a Dolphins fan despite the pan and emptiness. At least I have the memory of when we were a very good team in the mid 80s and early 90s, and the memory of playoff victories. I have vague memories of the 72 team, but I was just six at the time, so those are a not as clear.

I feel sorry for the younger fan base, so many of them are Dolphin fans because family members are. Of course Marino drew a bunch in too, but no Super Bowl victories in a very long time.
With that said, if I get a bad meal or poor service somewhere I try them again, especially if they are my favorite. If it continues I leave, but I dont stand at the front door and cry, I just "haul ***".Trowa likes this. -
It probably depends on what made you a fan to begin with. I don't live in Florida anymore but I developed my fondness of the Dolphins through family when I was young. Even when the Jags came along [located much closer to my hometown in the panhandle] I never believed I would be a Jags fan. I live in Baltimore now. I have no history, I just don't feel the same way about them. I don't have any vested interest in them. Maybe over time they could creep in as a number two but that's probably the best that could happen. In the end it's a game and the point is to enjoy yourself. Do what you enjoy and don't take it too seriously [really important to remember with our always disappointing Dolphins]. In the end the 'loyalty' of pulling for a sports team is not in the same degree as say loyalty to your family or loyalty to your country. Though people will try to convince you that it is. They are full of ****.

Cardinal (one Bowl in team history), Lions, Jets fans all have been through worse. Their teams are marked by the vast majority of their team's history being terrible. Only a few franchises have stretches with guys like Shula, Lombardi, Noll, and Landry.

The only thing that would make ever abandon the Dolphins is if they left Miami. Miami Gardens is good enough, but if they were to move to WPB and become the Florida Dolphins or move out of state. That would probably do it. I've stuck with them through thick and thin and I don't remember the Super Bowl victories.
I do understand where you're coming from. Nobody wants to support a loser and its frustrating when you have so much invested emotionally without having any control over what happens. That's why you have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. -
Cant speak for everybody but I certainly couldnt do it. I`ve seen the glory years, suffered through the embarrassments ( 1-15 etc.).. so I`m not about to jump ship now. And, I do believe that us true fans will once again taste the sweetness of victory one day. Hopefully soon ! -
Jumping off the bandwagon and then back on makes you akin to a Boston sports fan.
And I am by no means that terrible a person.Ohio Fanatic and Trowa like this. -
Given the years we had and publuc front office mistakes, you conspire that great things are happening? Who's chasing big foot here?
Go ahead and be optimistic. But dont witch hunt those of us who are skeptical and angry at the avoidable failures.
Don't forget, we all just want the dolphins to win. There's a reason some of us are angry. -

Its because you think they ARE doing what's best for the team.
I have no doubt that Ross n Ireland think they are doing the best they can. -

I live in Germany and became a Phinfan in 1998, so I was able to see Marino for like 2 years. I witnessed the horrible Playoffloss in Jacksonville and didn't think about abandoning the ship. My relationship was a bit rocky afterwards, but after Saban became our HC, I was back and more into it than ever before. I stayed during the Cameron Era and everything that came afterwards. It was not pretty but still, I cannot be a Fan of the NFL without being the Fan of the Miami Dolphins. I love this team and I can't imagine to ever leave them.
-
I essentially fell out of love with the team. I want them to do well, and root for them to be relevant again. Hopefully they turn things around, and I can enjoy some good seasons. But I just dont care as much as I used to. Reggie Bush doesn't help any lol.

the monster correlation you fail to realize is how important ownership and front office decisions are.
its why the Steelers and Pats are constant Winners.
oh, and Norv and Denny made the play-offs on a regular basis. again, what are YOU looking for? I don't want to be out of play-off contention before october. -
While I continue to question the personnel moves of Ireland, and the ownership of Ross, I still remain a fan of the Dolphins and I know I will be a fan until the day I die. I figure that eventually Ireland will either improve as a player personnel director or Ross will finally fire him. While I hope Ross finally gets it figured out in regards to to being an effective NFL owner. I realize that if he doesn't, I will remain a fan of the team I have rooted for the last 46 years. As much as I would love to divorce the organization sometimes, I just can't.
I don't have any idea if Philbin will be a good head coach or if he will be the teams next Cam Cameron. What I have learned though is that no matter how much the owner and GM may bother me, I continue to to be a fan of the Dolphin team. I can only continue to hope that Ross and Ireland eventually are able to convince me that they are much more aware of how to build a winning football team then they have shown so far.
I know many former season ticket holder and every single one of them feels the same way in regards to the Dolphins. I think all of us are just looking for a good reason to buy those season tickets again. Perhaps Philbin will give us that reason, but for now, it will remain a wait and see approach. I think most of us feel that we have been burned too many times by the organization over the last decade to just jump right back in and purchase season tickets because a new coach has been hired. It took me forty years to get so frustrated that I gave up my season tickets. I certainly am not foolish enough to go right out and and buy season tickets again until I see that Philbin knows what he is doing as an NFL head coach.
All the Dolphins need to do is have an exciting product on the field and win more games than they lose next year. Ticket sales will increase for home games during the 2012 season and season ticket renewals will start to head higher in 2013 if these two things occur. -
