I could find myself appreciating what Barkevious Mingo brings to the table.

But deep down, I'd know that I'm just convincing myself that I like Ted Ginn, all over again.

 

Like you said yesterday, to me it makes sense in the second round. But he won't get there. Jeff has to play the next few months beautifully. If he nails free agency, then he gets to be more fluid come draft time. And when I say nails, I mean re-sign Long to the right price, Starks too, Hartline and probably Smith, as well as bringing in a wideout or two and a tight end, possibly a corner too. Now this may mean the end of Dansby or Marshall and maybe some tough decisions elsewhere. But I just don't see a Ted Ginn style scenario being the right option at pick 12.

 

I don't trust this coaching staff to have both Brian Hartline and Davone Bess on roster. I think whoever else we get unless it's a proven guy like Greg Jennings, no matter how much explosive potential the player has, he's not going to get on the field because the coaching staff will say "I can't take either Brian or Davone off the field".

 

It will be a fun competition for the next few months...one thing I will say for your guy is that he does some offseason training with Brent jones who fully endorses your boy.

Draft Tyler Eifert...You want Tannehill to have his best friend no?

I mean who could be more impactful in the draft for what we need?

Maybe some think that's playin it safe, but I think when you have a chance to get an everydown, versatile, reliable, complete player, a player that you can see being here a long time, a player that matches your needs, and the philosophy that goes back a long time, you go for it..I see all that in Eifert.

 

Their original mocks had 3 of them going for Allen, so looks like Brooks has changed his predicted pick to Patterson.

 

There are ways to prioritize the position without necessarily going after a Tyler Eifert.

The shame of the whole Egnew thing is I'm pretty sure Jim Harbaugh would like Michael Egnew, maybe aside from the lack of physicality thing that teammates keep referring to. Harbaugh was and is a believer that A) you need to prioritize tight ends, and B) each one of them should be special at whatever they are, none should be just a kind of good all-around guy. If he loved an Anthony Fasano, it would be because he believed him to be an A+ blocker. If he loved a Michael Egnew, it would be because he believed him to be a great receiver. He's not going to take a guy that's just kind of good in all phases.

It may be instructive to look at this tight ends class through that lens. Do you need to prioritize the position by drafting Tyler Eifert 1st round? Or can you also prioritize it by drafting a Levine Toilolo (stone cold killer blocker with unique physical characteristics) and Joseph Fauria (glorified receiver that's near impossible to stop in the end zone) later in the Draft?

 

I'm beginning to think it's a tossup of either Jonathan Banks or Dion Jordan but this organization has done weirder things so you never know.

What I found the most interesting other than Ertz that high was he has Patterson at 8. That's by far the highest I've seen him go in a mock and this is by a former scout, not some writer. To me that says something.

 

The Jets get Bjoern Werner (somehow I skipped over that), the Patriots get Tank Carridine and the Bills get Cordarrelle Patterson...while the Dolphins get Barkevious Mingo. Does Daniel Jeremiah hate the Dolphins? He must. I wonder if he tried to get hired in Miami and Jeff Ireland insulted his mother or something. There's at least a better than average chance that's actually true.

 

When thinking about Miami and the tight end position, I don't think you need to look at their use of Anthony Fasano this year as an ideal situation. I think you need to look at the way Mike Sherman used the tight end at Texas A&M, and the way Joe Philbin/Mike McCarthy used the tight end in Green Bay.

Let's use Jermichael Finley as the "model" for what Joe Philbin is looking for in a tight end and the likely reason he was a big reason Michael Egnew was drafted.

791 total plays, only 388 had him aligned closely to the offensive tackle, and only 316 where he lined up in a 3 point stance. He was in a two point stance 475 times, or 60% of the time. Basically, Jermichael was asked to block on 7% of the time.

Now, to Mike Sherman. This was an article written in 2009, which I think may have been his first or second year as the head coach at TAMU.

Mike loved to line his tight ends up off the line as h-back types, and he would use them in the passing game or have them used as a lead blocker for the running back. Mike loved to have base runs out of an I formation philosophy at Texas A&M.

What does all this mean? IMO, Miami wants more of a joker type of tight end than a full fledged tight end.

 

Agree. Move back if there is a trade partner. Getting a stud TE should be a priority.

Most certainly Your philosophy can be played, and played correctly, however, right now I'm just matching up offensive skill players in the upcoming draft, and he comes in first for me, and if the defender we covet is not on the board, at some point you have to match up talents and see who wins, and take into account what the pressing need of the team is.

If he had not been injured, Tank is my favorite DE in the draft(who would be available to us).

I think Joe Philbin is insistent upon having a joker type at tight end but I think he also has a history of using all kinds, whatever is available to him. I think the mistake most people make is looking at Jermichael Finley in Green Bay and forgetting about Donald Lee. And Bubba Franks, for that matter. Donald Lee was Joe Philbin's primary tight end up there longer than Jermichael Finley was. Philbin was the TE Coach in 2004-2005, and in 2004 Bubba Franks was his primary tight end. In 2005, it was Donald Lee with a lot of work from David Martin (who at that time might've actually still been a WR come to think on it) and Franks. Philbin moved over to OL and took over as OC in 2007. Donald Lee and Bubba Franks were the TEs in 2007, then Donald Lee was the primary TE in 2008 with a sprinkling of uper-athlete Tory Humphrey, and a smidge of Jermichael Finley. Then in 2009 they used Finley and Lee equally. In 2010 they used Finley, Lee, Quarless, and Crabtree.

2011 was really the only year where it was Jermichael Finley as kind of the one-man show.

 

If all this is true (which I don't doubt), is there not a chance that the Dolphins will be able to get something out of Egnew next year after he's had his rookie year and full off-season to better learn the system?

 

Yeah if anyone thinks it's not possible to climb out of the hole he's got himself in as far as being awkward and regarded by teammates poorly for his attitude and physicality, look no further than Vernon Davis. I'm sure some Captain Hindsights out there will try and say Vernon was tooootally different, and maybe they are different as players, but the reality is he was regarded similar by coaches and teammates.

 

Not if blocking is in any way a requirement for the role.

 

Davis was an attitude problem. You can change that immediately with the right stimulus.

You can't change a combination of being a piss poor blocker technically, lacking the physical power (debateable... I think Michael COULD play stronger in the blocking game with the right attitude)... and most importantly he plays like a kid who was beaten and is traumatized by violent contact. Who knows what went on in his childhood as an orphan.

Two of those guys don't even have Cordarrelle Patterson in the first round.

 

And Daniel Jeremiah, the one among them that has been a scout within the last decade, has Patterson going 8 overall. It just highlights the differences in opinion inherent to the process.

It may be notable that Bucky Brooks, the other one that's been a scout within the last 20 years...has Cordarrelle going #12 overall to the Dolphins.

 

I have not been a scout in the last decade either.

I have Cordarrelle going anywhere from 8 to 28 depending on the combine skills, measurements and interviews.

 

I just realized that Daniel Jeremiah during the video segment may have shown his position rankings on a lot of the positions.

3) I have watched exactly ZERO Guards so far. Time to rectify that. I heard Winters was good at Senior bowl, wasn;t he? Wish he Daniel showed grades, as I am curious the gap between Warmack and Cooper.
4) Bjoern Werner FOURTH rated DE is very very very interesting to me and gives growing credence to KB and CK saying Werner may drop.
5) Who the eff is Logan Ryan?

He is a liability even against a DB in blocking.

 

If they don't get one in FA, I would put down in permanent marker that the Falcons take Ertz or Eifert if he gets to their pick and they may even be willing to trade up for him.
