That was a really awful game from a refereeing standpoint. In all the years of the Dolphins dominant edge rushing performance going back a long time I don't think I've seen more uncalled holding penalties than the Colts got away with this year. The Dolphins have been getting ****ed over pretty bad just statistically in terms of calls going against them this year, and this week was the worst.
Ryan Tannehill had a good game, and I think it was pretty clear there wasn't a lot of injury issue. He had a pretty good game, but the three incompletions on the last drive were killer. He made a nice play on the last one that could have made up for it, but alas.
It's a ****ty thing to act like I'm gloating about, but the Dolphins coaching staff has started accommodating for the vision issues that Reggie Bush has had. Probably 85% of the run plays this week were man-blocking plays, where Reggie Bush had an assigned hole to hit, rather than zone blocking plays where he has an aiming point and is expected to find cutback lanes. This is a pretty big departure from the past.
Nice to see what looked like a flash of the old Charles Clay. It's been lost in his struggles, but he's become a pretty good blocker for a guy his size. He at one point hit and stopped I believe Cory Redding who was unblocked at the line.
The wide receiver had a pretty good game. Nice to see Hartline back after a lull, but nothing game breaking. Jabar Gaffney has dropped like 2-3 potential big plays since he's got here.
Jake Long had probably as bad a game as he's had vs. the Dolphins. The Falcons game a couple years back wasn't as bad as people claim, and the Bears game in 2010 he had dislocated his left shoulder the week before and was playing Julius Peppers. This was a bad game vs. a Dwight Freeney who hasn't been particularly good this year.
The people crying that he should be let to walk in free agency are still ridiculous, though.
It was an intensely frustrating game defensively. Tackling was pretty atrocious at times.
The defensive line I think did better in terms of pressure than it looks, but between Andrew Luck playing very well and the amount of uncalled holding I think it's not really reflected on the stat sheet.
It seemed like Jason Trusnik got a lot of snaps this week, and I'm not sure why. It seemed almost like he was rotating in with various players. I know Kevin Burnett went down, but they've been kind of weird with who goes in... It's been Spitler, Trusnik, and Freeny all everytime someone gets hurt.
Koa Misi in man coverage down the field against a tight end is a gamble, but man did he get ****ed over on that pass interference call. He didn't turn his head around, but the contact was nearly non-existent.
That was a nightmare game from the defensive backfield. 6 plays of 3rd and 10+ converted is really asinine. They also left potential interceptions on the field that could have really made the difference.
Olivier Vernon is the best special teams blocker/coverage guy in the league right now. (Waiting for someone to say it's because he can't play DE)

I said all week that Luck is phenomonal in the pocket, I said his ability to manipulate the pocket is special, and if we can "contain"him, we would win, well, we could not contain this man,He beat the sh&$ out if us with his skillset, and we lost..plain and simple, he's that good, and if we wanna win the afc one year, were gonna have to out score him...
3 points in the 2nd half by our offense was ridiculous..
We need a traditional down hill runner, which Reggie and Ronnie have not been...Barner from Oregon. seems about right. -
Thought I was the only person losing his mind over the blatant holds not being called. But they called the hold that didn't exist on Thigpens return in the 4th..

To me the Offense did what is has been doing all year, mildly productive, nothing spectacular.
D was really disappointing, that was possibly the worst game from our defensive secondary I've seen since the Marino era or 07, SS24 will have nightmares about it.
I thought the phantom hold on the Thigpen return was atrocious. -
Unfortunately Long was also beaten by guys other than Freeney.
I said it weeks ago and I maintain it. Whether he's hurt or simply isn't what he used to be, Long is not playing like an elite left tackle anymore. It's been two years now.
Jeff Ireland may pay him what he's seeking, but he's not worth it right now IMO. Frankly I will be disappointed if we do.
The defense was just flabbergasting today. After facing some lackluster QBs, they got exposed to a degree. But this was on another level. Really tough to watch that performance today.

The problem I have with today's game is that when you're trying to get over the hump and win as a favored team on the road in the NFL, which isn't easy to do, you need stud performances from your leaders to set the tone for the team and lead the other players by example.
In the midst of that we got very subpar performances from both Jake Long and Sean Smith, who are guys you need to have step up in that situation. Two of the players who could've (and should've) helped this team get over this hump it's sitting on didn't show up. -
Sean Smith sucks. There, I said it.
Aside from that, we failed to put enough pressure on Luck. He's everything he was advertised. But, when you give any QB that kind of protection they're going to find the open man and make plays.MAFishFan likes this. -

If the refs don't call holding on the Colts OL, Luck has all day to throw making the secondary look like the crap they displayed.
I'm with everyone on this. It was a disappointing loss. -
Overall a "bad" game all around...our secondary...our pass rush...the referees......but I would be remiss if I did not mention the God-awful job CBS Sid with the telecast! They missed by my count 4 snaps! 4! funny me but I thought their job was to televise the game...made a frustrating day that much worse!

This is probably the first time all year that I've agreed with most of what you said in your post game threads Dpate. The refereeing was abysmal. I think Philbin could get fined if he says what he wants to say in the post game presser. And he's a reserved guy. But you see him going ballistic on the sidelines and then after the game.
I don't know what it is with Cameron Wake and why he isn't respected by the refs. You'd think after being in the league as long as he has been and statistically dominating that the refs might show him a LITTLE respect. I like to think I watch a lot of NFL football. I haven't seen a guy as good as he is not get the respect by the refs. And then you have Fasano getting called for holding at a crucial time... and Jake Long getting called for it on the last offensive play of the game... not to mention the Pouncey false start calls. Now, he's done this all season long, yet today they decide to not only call it against him, but to call it against him at the most crucial point in the game... 2nd and 10, with miami driving for the game tying field goal at mid field... not to mention the holding call on Marlon Moore on Thigpen's long punt return that set us up at midfield with 2 plus min's left... a point where we were thinking touchdown to win instead of field goal to tie. Not to mention the Koa Misi pass interference call... that doesn't get called the same way every time. Remember us a couple of weeks ago?
It's really tiresome for me. It just takes all the fun and competitiveness out of it knowing that the cards are seemingly stacked against us every game. It's like fighting a war with swords when the enemy is being supplied with machine guns. I'm just not enjoying it anymore. Maybe I'm getting too old lol...
By the way... why have Lamar Miller rip an 8 yard run only to not see the ball the rest of the game?
As for Jake Long and Sean Smith... They didn't do their agents any favors today... that is for sure. But to say that each one sucks and shouldn't be resigned is to not understand the situation. We still have 8 games left. Lets see how they finish out the season... and then how much money they are asking for before we make up our minds. Both players have earned that level of respect based on previous play. It's a complex situation for each and we don't have to make a decision right now.ssmiami, thisperishedmin and Ludacris like this. -

Despite Luck having a monster game and some horrible calls by the refs, the Dolphins only lost by 3 points and had a chance in the end. Dropped passes and missed field goals might have made it a worse loss for us but somehow we were still in it. The defense still kept them out of the end zone more often than not. I understand that if the calls went our way and the defense had gotten a couple of those close INTs then the game might have been a lot better.

As for what he brings to the table in terms of an overall skill set, I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. :wink2:
But hey, that's cool. It's all good bro. :knucks: -
Today was concerning to me for one reason. And some posters brought this up this week.
This was our first real test against a quality QB/quality passing offense since week 1, and we failed miserably. And no, I'm not calling Andy Dalton and the Bengals a quality passing offense yet.
I can't remember giving up so many 3rd and longs so easily maybe ever.
The pass rush was good, I thought, especially since we were rushing 4 almost exclusively. Dropping 7 in coverage and just getting burnt play after play was demoralizing. The defensive backfield let this team down today, and I'm worried that we have no shot at catching the Patriots until we figure it out.
Edit: And the amount of holding calls Indy got away with today was ridiculous. And to come back and call Jake Long for Holding and on the punt return, in addition to a phantom false start was simply "fishy" -
As badly as they need yet another good boundary CB, they also need a better nickel CB. Marshall may suffice if they keep him in one of those roles (nickel CB), but a true #1 is necessary in Miami. It's the same for the offense at WR.

I think the Colts played well and deserved the win but the refs regarding those calls you mentioned, didn't give the Dolphins a chance. Not even a fighting chance. It's like they decided the game for us and controlled the tempo and momentum at critical points.Paul 13 likes this. -

How about we give just a liiitle bit of credit to Indy. I understand the frustrations, but take away some of the bashing from our own and give credit to the opponent.
Did anyone see the post-game speech by Pagano? The Colts were inspired today and their future star QB had his day.ssmiami, The Aqua Crush and cdz12250 like this. -
OK my take
1st I apologize for anyone reading my posts in game thread, while I mean alot of what I say, it is emotionally charged. Wife calls me nuts, maybe she is right. I get wrapped up in this team, I have lived and died with them since the undefeated season. I am 46 now and remember that year not specifics in that I can tell you what happened tho can say I remember griese getting hurt and watching Earl Morral play. Point is, it comes down to belief. In the old days when we wer good, you knew they wwould get off the field on 3rd and 10+ you knew they would make a play.
Today, I saw a defense chasing its tail being dictated to. Coverage was awful, rush was there but too often we couldnt stay on receivers. 3rd and 2 and we have 10 yard cushions? I guarenteed convertions when I saw that. it isnt that I dont want to credit Luck nor state the officials were bad, but it was the hand that was dealt, winners deal and overcome. We fell today. It doesnt mean we are done and wont compete. I am hopeful of the future after today I actually think Philbin will turn this into a lesson they will learn and grow from. It still is horrible play on defense.
Tannehill and teh offense is growing but needs help, Luck is great but Wayne is a vet that can be a crutch, we are getting there but arent yet.
But in the end, we are better than I would have thought and 8-8 is reasonable and attainable and would be a good starting point.thisperishedmin and NyPhinfan like this. -

But, I think it's clear that Miami needs to upgrade over Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson. They're fine special teams players for sure, and maybe you can count on them for a spot start or back-up duty replacing someone who is injured; but in my opinion, they shouldn't be playing as many snaps as they are on defense. That's one area Miami needs to address this offseason. -
I'd personally rather have Smith as the #2 guy or boundary corner, and try and find a true, #1 field corner. -
Man, just thinking how were gonna have to build this team to Contain and beat Luck..
We got some pressure on him, but obviously he's too good for above average pressure, we need athletes that can do special things when chasing this player..
Might change the complexity of the early rounds of the draft. -
By having worthwhile cornerbacks. Luck had easy throw after throw. Tannehill's throws were very different. There was a tight window for only moderate gains available.

Not saying you did this, but comparing Ryan Tannehill to Andrew Luck is unfair. Compare Ryan Tannehill to anyone else in their respective rookie seasons, and we'll all see that he's ahead of the curve. We should all be happy about that at least.
