I like the signing if it isn't for the same type money he was getting the past few seasons. Now that Tannehill is firmly established as the starter, they no longer need to pay a backup $5 million a year.

 

Luckiest dude in the league. Nobody hates you, and you make all the cash.

Hm. Thought they'd go for a more athletic type. I like Moore, though, and stability/consistency at the QB position is always good.

I don't like him one bit. Hated his style when he played in 2011. Way, way too risky while giving up on easier first downs, game after game. That being said, he's the best option that was left, and hopefully he's a good influence on RT and the locker room. Also hoping its a reasonable deal, because he was paid crazy money last year. If all goes well, he'll never see the field.

 

This shouldn't have happened, but they blew it in free agency. The Clay thing really messed them up. Now they don't have a draft pick to spare on a QB prospect.

If they had known Clay was going to be lost we could have been players for both McCourty and Patrick Robinson and we would have had the secondary secure with only the one gaping hole at LG.

Maybe if they trade down in the first and pick up a 2nd or a 3rd and a 5th, they could still draft a QB. Kinda slim pickens IMO.

 

IMO this is the furthest thing from the truth. They could have kept clay if they really wanted to. They knew he was leaving and have known.

Just like with every other backup QB, he is only there in case of an emergency.

The reality is that if any starter in the NFL is out for an extended period of time. That team isn't going to win many games to begin with.

They need a backup and Moore has been on the team for the past four years and he knows the offense. As long as he isn't getting paid as much per year as he did for the past three years. He was the best backup QB still on the market and they definitely were in need of a proven backup.

 

Well, my feeling is that when a guy is limited, he needs to play within the system and make smart decesions that allow his team the greatest chance of success. Moore all too often would go for broke in situations where there was no need - throwing into triple coverage on first down at mid field for example. It worked far more often than it should have because of Marshall bailing him out of the other team just not making the play, but it still drove me nuts.

 

TBH, am rather glad the Jest and Jills went with Fitzpatrick and Cassel over MMoore.

 

Preposterous! Everyone knows they were working their asses off to get a long term deal done with Clay. If they had just let him test free agency the cap room would have been there to make a serious offer to Devin McCourty and the Dolphins would have had the best safety tandem in the NFL including those two guys up in Seattle. As it was, the Clay thing dragged out and the other top tier free agents were all gone except Hardy and Percy Harvin.

 

Long Snappers have it pretty easy as well.
Best position on the field as long as you get the ball there 5-10 times a game.

Moore is a pretty good Backup QB when you look around the league.

Ofcourse they were going to attempt to resign him, there's always that sort of obligation there. Due diligence. that doesn't mean they would, or that they didn't know he was pretty much gone anyway. You really thing they just dropped contact or something?

And yes. if they REALLY wanted to, they could have kept him. in the end, they chose not to. we had the OPTION to match and COULD HAVE.

Good I guess.....Moore is as inconsistent as they come if defenses plan for him. But hes a good guy to have behind Tannehill. At that point theres no one in the league or available that could save us anyways...

 

If he were the starter, I would agree with your concerns. As the backup the past three years, he has only been in the game a few times.

Backups are backups because they have issues in their game which prevents them from being starters in the NFL. When you look at the available veteran backups in free agency, Moore was the best available and that is why this was a good signing IMO.

The fact is that if Tannehill goes down and the backup has to come in and start the majority of the games next year. Whether it is Moore or some other backup, the Dolphins aren't going to win many games and they will probably end up with a top ten pick in next years draft.

All you have to do is look at how losing their starting QB affected the Arizona Cardinals last year or how the Colts went from one of the best teams in the league to the worst team, the year Manning missed the entire season.

There have been a few instances in NFL history where a backup has taken over and helped a team have a successful season, but the majority of the backups are usually merely a stop-gap player who you would rather see holding a clip board instead of actually playing in the game.

There really aren't 32 quality starting QB's in the NFL at this time. So expecting a backup who is going to be better than Moore probably isn't realistic.

I was very surprised Bowles didn't pick up Moore and instead went with the noodle Arm "Fitzmagic" (as one Jet fan dubbed him). I would of thought 2011 would of left an impression on him. Matt Moore went 6-6 (should of gone 8-4, if not for some bizarre finishes), threw 60% completion, almost a 2-1 TD/INT ratio. We really should hate the guy, he basically cost us Andrew Luck lol.

I'm happy with Moore coming back. If "continuity" is important for Tannehill, that stands true for Moore as well. This offense suits him too. Much better than Sherman's ever did. If something were to happen to Tannehill, we'll still have a punchers chance w/Moore.

The premise that they knew all along Clay would be gone is absurd. If they knew that, they would have just let him walk. They didn't let him walk, they transition tagged him and tied up that 7mil in cap, per league rules; and that money didn't come off the salary cap until they finally gave up and chose not to match the Bills offer.

If they had actually known or had this really strong sense that you somehow psychically claim, they surely would have kept that cap room open during early free agency to make another solid move.

But didn't they have the option, at any time, to revoke the tag? Why couldn't they talk to players (McCourty or whoever), even if the cap room wasn't on the books, if at any point at their discretion, they could have revoked the tag?
